Mount Isa & Cloncurry travel video guide Queensland Australia
We visited Mount Isa, the only city in outback Australia.
Described as the Oasis of the Outback - a gleaming mirage on the horizon for travellers from all directions - Mount Isa nestles among the ochre-red Selwyn Ranges, on the banks of the Leichhardt River.
Mount Isa has grown from strength to strength over the years but the harsh picturesque landscape has barely changed, becoming one of the main draw-cards for visitors each year. Mount Isa brings out the adventurous spirit in everyone, with ample places to fish, camp, four wheel drive, or relax and enjoy an Outback sunset. The rugged terrain is a four wheel driver's haven, and visitors can explore the region just as the pioneers of the region did many years ago.

The outback Queensland city of Mount Isa, mining area, vulnerable for flash floods
Mount Isa Region
The outback Queensland city of Mount Isa has been cut in two by floodwaters following heavy rainfall.
Mount Isa (/ˈaɪzə/ eye-zə) is a city in the Gulf Country region of Queensland, Australia. It came into existence because of the vast mineral deposits found in the area. Mount Isa Mines (MIM) is one of the most productive single mines in world history, based on combined production of lead, silver, copper and zinc.[3]
With an estimated urban population of 21,821 as at June 2015,[1] Mount Isa is the administrative, commercial and industrial centre for the state's vast north-western region. Although situated in an arid area, the artificial Lake Moondarra[4] 19 kilometres (12 mi) north of the city on the Leichhardt River provides both drinking water and an area for watersports, birdwatching and recreation. Locals often refer to Mount Isa as The Isa.[5]
Due to the lead production in the city, Mount Isa has one of the most intensive air quality monitoring systems in Australia.[6] Concerns have been raised over childhood lead contamination and air pollution within the city.[7
More than 100mm has fallen over the city since Thursday t Isa Post Office opened on 1 August 1924.[10]
A location for the town's hospital was chosen in 1929, with a small building completed the following year.[11] In 1931, a larger structure was moved to the site from the closed mining town of Kuridala.[11]
Heritage listings[edit]
Mount Isa has a number of heritage-listed sites, including:
Camooweal Street: Underground Hospital[12]
Camooweal Street: Tent House[13][14]
Mount Isa Mining District: Bower Bird Battery[15]
on Mount Isa Mine Lease: Mount Isa Mine Early Infrastructure[16]
Nettle Street: Casa Grande[17]
Governance[edit]
Mount Isa at local level is part of the City of Mount Isa, at state level is part of the electoral district of Mount Isa in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, and at federal level is part of the Division of Kennedy in the Australian House of Representatives. The mayor of Mount Isa, after the 2015 Local Government Elections, is Joyce Mccullough. The City of Mount Isa LGA jurisdiction, covering 43,188 km2[18] (17th largest in Queensland), is one of the largest in the world in terms of area[citation needed] and takes in the border town of Camooweal, 188 km (117 mi) to the north-west of Mount Isa and 12 km (7.5 mi) from the border of the Northern Territory.
Local industry and business[edit]
Mount Isa's industry is largely dependent on mining. Xstrata Plc operates the Mount Isa Mines lease adjacent to the city, which comprises the Enterprise underground copper mine, X41 underground copper mine, Black Star Open Cut silver-lead zinc mine, and metallurgical processing facilities. Silver-lead-zinc ore is also mined 20 km (12 mi) to the north at Hilton from the George Fisher underground mine, and the adjoining Handlebar Hill open cut, which is trucked back to Mount Isa for processing.
Mount Isa is in the top two of the largest copper mining and smelting operations in the country.[19] Copper and lead are smelted on site, with copper anodes and zinc concentrate being transported 900 km (560 mi) to the city and port of Townsville on the east coast. The lead ingots are transported to a refinery in Britain where the silver is extracted. The mine is the most significant landmark in the area, with the stack from the lead smelter (built 1978), standing 270 m tall, visible from all parts of the city and up to 40 km (25 mi) out.[citation needed]
In 2008 a Queensland Health report found that more than 10% of children in Mount Isa had blood lead levels above World Health Organization recommendations. The mining operator Xstrata denied responsibility and stated that the town has naturally high levels of lead in the soil.[20] However, aafternoon and one car was swept off a causeway.
Senior Sergeant Jeff Magnus told ABC radio motorists should stay at home, saying if it's flooded, forget.

Australia Vlog #25 - Mount Isa to Katherine
Thanks for watching, enjoy! Scroll down for more...
August 10th-17th 2017
Our next destination was Mount Isa, home of mines and the Southern Hemisphere's largest rodeo. We spent 2 days at the rodeo for George's birthday and had a really good weekend. We visited Lake Moondarra after and started modifying our car
to sleep in so we didn't have to put the tent up! After lots of driving into the Northern Territory and to Three Ways, we headed north. We stopped at Mataranka to go for a swim in their thermal pools, which was very refreshing after some time in the outback.
We then went into Katherine and hiked to a lookout over the gorge. Very beautiful! We also stopped in at Edith Falls for a swim. Starting our journey to the Top End with Kakadu National Park, next.

28 Hour Outback Bus Ride // Bus Queensland from Brisbane to Mount Isa, Australia
This is a bit of a different video. It’s the first time Malika and I have been apart in the last two years. I needed to travel to the middle of outback Queensland to visit my family. It was a gruelling 28 hour bus trip, but the sites were absolutely stunning. Malika and I both love the outback so much, and did a similar road trip in our old beat-up Holden Commodore a few years ago (before we left Australia).
Malika dropped me off at the Gold Coast train station and I took the train up to Brisbane. The train announcements were a blast from the past and I absolutely loved them ???? I didn’t capture as much of the outback on video as I would have liked. I got chatting to the passengers on the bus, along with the bus driver. It’s a much cheaper way to get to the outback than flying, and everyone was so nice. Big thank you to Bus Queensland for their amazing service and for being one of the lifelines of the outback.
I hope you enjoy the video ????

We are Jori and Malika, a couple from Australia living in the U.K., and documenting our adventures all around the world. We publish a weekly travel vlog to share with our friends and family, and we'd love for you to come with us ????
We started Beyond Your Doorstep as a way of documenting our travel so that we could look back on it ourselves. We started off posting photos, and then blogging, and now we vlog basically everywhere we go. We know travel is hard, and it's expensive, so we try and keep it as real as possible. Jori works as an engineer and Malika works as a waitress (*it's weird talking in the 3rd person*) ????We live in a little countryside town in England where we work 9-5 most of the year. We live in a tiny studio apartment and try to keep our costs down as much as possible. We travel whenever we can and edit our vlogs at night and on the weekends. It's a pretty huge workload but we love reliving our adventures as we edit and publish our travel vlogs. We may not be the quintessential digital nomad travel couple, but we love this adventure we're on!
We love seeing new places, experiencing new cultures, and tasting food from all over the world! Join us on our journey exploring this beautiful planet we all call home!

Javan Johnston and Mitch Lingard fight THREE men tag team - Outback Fight Club Mt Isa 2016
This fight features Javan Johnston - son of Glyn Johnston and brother to Kolby Johnston. He tag teams with Mitch to form a very formidable duo. They are so formidable in fact that were matched with three (yes 3!) challengers. The three local boys kept throwing punches in bunches, but they were no match for the class of The Mohican and Baby Mauler, and their constant tagging which kept the opponents guessing. An entertaining fight.
Mount Isa Eisteddfod 2016
The outback city of Mount Isa in Australia has made a name for itself in mining - but did you realise it's also home to a horde of talented performers?
One of the city's most famous exports is Deborah Mailman and she, like so many others started out performing on the stage of the city's eisteddfod.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the event and the ABC's Emma Cillekens went backstage for a look.
