Cahooque Creek (06/16/12)
The kids and I did a day paddle on Cahooque Creek in the Croatan National Forest in Southeastern, NC. Cahooque Creek is a tributary of the Neuse River.
Neuse River Trail by George Randy Bass
Segment 1 of the Neuse River Trail is now open! This segment begins at Falls Dam and continues to the WRAL Soccer Center. Well worth the wait. Fall is the ideal time to experience the trail with fall colors, active wildlife and cool comfortable weather.
The Neuse River Trail is planned to be a 10-foot wide asphalt path extending from Falls Lake Dam to the Wake County line. The project is separated into smaller sub-projects that are planned as individual construction projects. The trail that begins at Falls Lake Dam and will extend along the river to the Wake County line, a distance of 28 miles. The estimated cost for the entire project is approximately $30 million.
This unique project also opens opportunities to adjoining communities to connect to this central backbone. With the completion of the 28 mile trail and the construction of two other trails, Mingo Creek in Knightdale and Smith Creek in Wake Forest the Capital Area Greenway could become the central structure of a larger system covering North Carolina. The Mountains to Sea Trail (MST), a State of North Carolina linear park, extends from the mountains in western North Carolina at Murfreesboro to the coast of eastern North Carolina at Jockey's Ridge. The corridor for this trail connects to the Neuse River Trail at Falls Lake Dam. The planned MST then follows the Neuse River Trail through Wake County to the county line.
For the love of photography, the seed of imagination!

CAPITOL VIEWS: Rev. William Barber and the NC NAACP
RALEIGH, N.C. -- On the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, the state chapter of the NAACP and other advocates for the poor gathered at the Legislative Building to urge lawmakers to make addressing poverty a priority in the coming General Assembly session, which begins Jan. 30. The Rev. William Barber, president of the N.C. State Conference of the NAACP, said poverty is a moral, social and political crisis that lawmakers can no longer ignore.

Drone Video from Eden Park Yadkin River
Very shaky video from Eden Park on the Yadkin River. Pretty windy as well. You can probably tell I'm still afraid to go to far out, the magical 100m cut-off has me pretty timid. Anyway...many thanks to Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks for their beautiful backing music. Interesting fact, the album Derek and the Dominoes was named after Derek, not so much for the infant but Eric Clapton just like the way it was spelled. He like it better than Eric. If you really like it check out the Tedeschi Trucks Band's album, Revelator.
North Carolina vacation pool fun
Gators in the swamp.
Lots of big gators in the swamp. They filmed some parts for the HBO True Blood film here. I wake up every day and think that though the people in this area are primarily low income we live in such a beautiful place. We swim here sometimes but NOT today.
Spotted Rock Cabin
Stay in our Spotted Rock Cabin
Our charming red cabin is a two bedroom, one bath loft home built high up on a mountain ridge with views extending far off towards the Smoky Blue Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Facing west, watch the sun set from the deck while relaxing in our rocking chairs with a cocktail. If you have just returned from a hard day of site seeing, soak up the heat in our hot tub while looking at the stars or if your fortunate, falling snow.....a bucket-list item.
At three thousand feet, get away from the summer heat, enjoy our rustic wood stove fireplace in the evenings and hike through the hundreds of acres of surrounding forest, and through our own 60 acres of solitude.
If feeling alone, just talk to Alexa anytime she is needed: Alexa, play NPR...or...Alexa, what is the weather like? If you must tell Alexa words that would pique the interest of the NSA, do that at the beginning of your stay so that the black-clad commandoes who will surround the cabin won't bother the next guest!
You can reach the cabin in your regular car, and when 'home', the shack with its two compulsory mounted deer heads looking over the living room will feel like your place for rest and relaxation.
Don't look for the granite, you wont find it, but do bring your laptops as there is high speed internet available, a wireless printer/scanner all ready for your office away from home and netflix for bumming it on a lazy day.
Feel your blood pressure fall as you drive up to the top of our ridge, passing through the security gate to reach this exclusive mountain top where you can rest easy knowing you are in the coziest cabin here.
You cannot see your neighbors, they are a good long walk away. Perfect for strolls, and seeing the deer that roam around.
See the Area
Shop for antiques or groceries in Brevard NC which is 20 minutes away. Dine at the pleasant Red Lion Inn, at the bottom of the mountain (1 mile from the cabin).
Fish at our local lake, which is within a mile or if you like hiking through the woods, straight down the mountain.
See the spectacular mountain meadow waterfall within two miles of your family home in the mountains.
Go on Day-Trips
The Transylvania county / Asheville area is called the 'Land of Waterfalls' for good reason. Visit one of the five state parks that surround the cabin, drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway, in about thirty minutes, dine at the fabulous Pisgah Inn restaurant (58 min from your cabin) overlooking the entire area.
Visit the Biltmore House (1hr 19min from the cabin) for a day of seeing how you will never live. Go to the Asheville Farmers Market (1hr 5min) and pick up jams, honey, dried fruit and all manner of fresh produce...so you can be healthy.
Go kayaking or tubing with the Headwaters Outfitters (9 minutes from the cabin, near Rosman) down the French Broad or Davidson Rivers....
Use our 4.5 inch telescope to show your family the planets in our clear, starry sky after you downloaded a sky app to your smart phone.
Visit Asheville (1 hour) and dine at the Mellow Mushroom in downtown, knowing you can escape back to your cabin when the artists wake up.
Come and stay at our Spotted Rock Cabin!
