White Oak River, NC - Blackwater Paddling
August 31, 2017 - A few miles up the mirror-smooth, dark water, cypress swampland of the lower White Oak River near Stella, NC, in the Croatan National Forest.
MY APOLOGIES for some sound issues - new camera rig picked up EVERY vibration through the boat, and overwhelmed the mic. I tried to compensate with post-processing, but captioning was the best I could do in some places... I want to share this place though, even if the video isn't my best!

Our boats - plain and simple Pelican Trailblazers, little ABS kayaks bought originally for our kids. They're maneuverable, light, easy to carry and put in anywhere. Their shortness (10') makes the bow wander a bit and they take more energy to paddle the distance or cruise quickly, but they're good little versatile all-around boats!

Paddle to Bear Island at Hammocks Beach State Park
Over the Labor Day weekend Ladybug and I paddled out to Bear Island at Hammocks Beach State Park. The island is only accessable by boat. We paddled over alongside dolphins and camped on the beach. We could see the sunset and sunrise both from the front door of our tent.

Magic in the Marsh at Rachel Carson Reserve
In mid October Ladybug and I went down to Atlantic Beach for the weekend with a couple of friends. On our first day paddling we went over to Carrot Island and Horse Island just across Taylor's Creek from the Beaufort waterfront. Once we turned into the inlet between Carrot Island and the Town Marsh, we came across a herd of about 25 of the feral horses in the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve. We watched them for about half an hour paddling to within about 100 yards of the closest ones. We then paddled out to the Knob of Carrot Island, around the point and then back to Beaufort.
Our second day we were going to paddle to Shackleford Banks to see the Wild Mustangs, but because of a strong nor east wind we had to scrap that plan and took our friends down to Bear Island at Hammocks Beach State Park. Ladybug and I had been down there and stayed last September, but it was nice to share the adventure with friends. While sitting on the beach we saw a group of about 12 dolphins swim past about 50 yards off shore.
It was a very good warmup for my upcomming trip out to Lookout Bight and the South Core Banks in just a couple of weeks.

Nantahala River North Carolina And Paddle Inn Outfitters
Nantahala means land of the noon day sun. The wall of the gorge are so steep, the sun doesn't shine into the gorge until mid-day. It's a beautiful river offering excellent whitewater fun and trout fishing. The North Carolina state record brown trout was caught in the river...about 23 lbs. You can hire a fishing guide to learn more tips and tricks. Definitely watch out when the water releases from the dam....it's very cold and very dangerous/swift water. The Paddle Inn outfitters have been around more than 40 years. They offer guided rafting/kayak trips and rentals.
