If you like nature, you need to visit Pai, Thailand! This small town in the mountains of Northern Thailand is full of amazing sights. It's about a three-hour (windy-road) drive from Chiang Mai. Mostly known for it's hippie vibe, it's a very chill and quiet place to escape the busy cities.
We ended up paying 500 baht (~$15 USD) for this organized tour (it's called the Pai Let's Go Tour). But you can also just rent some motorbikes and ride to these locations yourself.
We have plenty more adventures to share, so make sure to subscribe and turn on post notifications to stay updated with our journey in Southeast Asia!

PAI: Exploring the hippie hillside town in Northern Thailand (ปาย)
As a vacation from our residence in Chiang Mai we decided to take a serpentine road trip to the hillside country town of Pai (ปาย) where relaxed, wandered around, enjoyed stunning scenery and visited a Hot Spring.
As we crammed into a over-capacity white minivan we began our journey to Pai which included a staggering 746 turns / curves in the road. I'm not normally the type to get sick on the road; however, I started to feel nauseous from the trip, so I ended up popping a couple of gravol pills to settle my stomach down.

For every twist and turn we encountered along the way we were rewarded as soon as we arrived in Pai where we instantly noticed the pace of life slowing down.
Our guest house was located in an idyllic setting which included hillside views, rice fields in our backyard and thatched bungalows. To keep us company three pet cats would often sleep beside us as we swung on a hammock and the adorable Pugsley, a cute pug (who is actually named Faye) would wander over to us looking up at us with his big eyes and wrinkly face.
The three days in Pai were spent mostly relaxing and chilling out. In fact, it's hard for me to fathom people coming to Pai and doing anything else but taking it easy.
The only thing I wish is that we had more time. If I ever base myself in Thailand again I think I'd prefer Pai over Chiang Mai to work on creative projects.
This is the hillside town of Pai. It is about 3.5 hours away from Chiang Mai and this is where we've been spending the weekend.
We are staying at the Pai Chan Cottages and this is our private little Bungalow, so let's go have a look inside.
Hey! Come on in! This is our humble little room here. You can see we've got a nice big size bed and mosquito net over here. Fortunately this time of the year we haven't had to be using it very often. It's freezing at night! It is freezing so likely the mosquitoes have all died. The best part about this place are the views. Check out this: rice fields!
Am I interrupting your nap? You're just too cute and wrinkly. Look at that little nose.
Meow meow!
We've only got a few days left here in Thailand and I've been hearing from friends raving about Pai for years and I've always put off coming here. This time I said 'There is no way we're going to leave Thailand without coming to Pai. Now I understand what all of the fuss is about. This place is wonderful. It is one of the most relaxing towns I've ever visited and we're going to show you around.
One of the main reasons people come to Pai is to just relax and totally chill out. A lot of other destinations you go to visit temples, you go to do other types of things but here it is just enjoying the scenery, wandering around and swinging on a hammock. Those are the top things to do and I'm loving it so far.
That was awesome! We crossed that rickety old bridge and then we came to some really cool looking guesthouses and now we're here in the fields.
One of the draws to Pai is being able to explore the countryside. Yesterday, I rented my very first scouter. It only cost me three dollars a day and I got a helmet with that. It was a great way to explore. I thought it was going to be kind of tricky riding it for the first time but it was a lot of fun.
Aside from chilling out and relaxing in Pai one of the few things that we actually really want to do is to take a trip over and visit the hot springs.
That giant white Buddha over there is something I plan on visiting tomorrow morning when I wake up.
I can't swing. I need an assistant to swing me. Sam, come swing me! I'm just kidding. I'm kidding! No, Sam. Sam no! Oh, my gosh! What are you doing? Okay, I just want to get you on the hammock. I don't want to go flying! No. Okay, just go back on and say something.

Stunning Bat Cave (Thum Lod) in Pai, Thailand.
Thum Nam Lod (Lod Cave) is located just a few KM north of the Pang Mapha district in Mae Hong Sorn (North West Thailand). It consists of a 1.6 KM series of breathtaking limestone caves split into 3 chambers, all interconnected by a central flowing river. The caves are home to fish, swifts and thousands of Asian Wrinkle-Lipped bats. There are upwards of 2,000 steps winding their way through the mysterious caves, making for a memorable adventure. Entry to the cave site only costs 100THB and you pay a further 450THB for a group tour which lasts anything between 1 – 2 hours depending on how far you want to explore and how quickly you climb.
Walking through the natural limestone hollows reveals hundreds of beautifully formed stalactites and stalagmites. To remember which is which, just look at the spelling. Stalactites have a C for ceiling, stalagmites have a G for ground. Ascending and descending through the dark, our vision aided only by oil lanterns provided an eerie and magical atmosphere. As we moved forward the knowledgeable tour guides took great pleasure comparing the rock formations to different things. They would say “this rock looks like a crocodile, here is an anaconda shaped stalactite, and this is the popcorn wall.”
On our journey we learned of a few secrets hidden in the history of Thum Lod, including a 1,400-year-old teakwood coffin cave belonging to the Lawa tribe who used to live nearby. Even more impressive is the story behind the pre-historic inhabitants of this cave, the Hoabinhian hunting tribe. They are told to have been Stone age hunter-gatherers and many of their short axes, hammerstones, and bone made tools have been found during the caves excavation in the 1960’s.
Bamboo rafts channel you through to other chambers. The bats’ screeches as they echolocate and communicate are unsettling yet stunning, making the adventure even more rich. There are large freshwater fish in the river, made fat from the constant feeding frenzy as tourists buy 50-baht bags of fish food to feed them as they traverse the river. Swifts flutter about throughout the caves and in greater numbers near the cave entrances. If you plan your tour for just before dusk, the nocturnal Asian Wrinkle-Lipped bats awaken and spill out in their thousands in a beautiful crooked curving cloud in search of insects to feast on, such as beetles and caterpillars.
The Asian Wrinkle-Lipped Bats are small and average around 20g in weight. They have long narrow wings which allows them to fly at high speeds in sacrifice of good agility. However, they have a keen sense of direction based on their eco locative abilities. They let out a very high frequency screech which bounces off nearby walls and objects allowing them to ‘see’ around them.
They are usually found widely distributed throughout Southern Asia and are well known for residing in large caves in numbers exceeding 100 thousand. There are so many that when they emerge from the caves, it can take up to 2 hours for them all to evacuate, that’s some traffic jam!
The bat droppings, otherwise known as guano, are plastered all over the caves. It can be harvested and used as fertilizer due to its high content of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. It is also utilised in some Chinese based medicines for alleviating stomach pains and to work against certain insect and snake bites.
Thum Lod cave was an incredible day trip and I highly recommend you go there if you are travelling close to Pai or Mae Hong Sorn in the North West of Thailand.

Poignant Pai Street Food Tour
The frequently visited, peaceful Pai has some of the best food when it comes to both Thai and western choices. In this food tour, there is a bit both vibes. Starting off with a traditional Northern Thai dish named Larb in a beautiful, creekside restaurant just 15 minutes away from the city centre. Moving onto Pai's walking street with its many food selections and delicacies that will definitely tickle the senses. Pai is a divine, serene place to visit and I would highly recommend it to anyone that would like to visit. I would also highly urge people to take the scenic route in Pai. grab a bike and go for a drive, see a few waterfalls, go to a few temples, you know, all that outdoorsy stuff. Take it all in for its true worth!
