Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Black Canyon, Colorado -- Crystalline rock walls and startling depths. Come here for spectacular canyons that have been shaped and reshaped. The Black Canyon is so steep and narrow that for most of daylight, it's dark. Far from city lights, astronomers love to come here for incredible star gazing.

The Black Canyon at Gunnison National Park
Big enough to be overwhelming, still intimate enough to feel the pulse of time, Black Canyon of the Gunnison exposes you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. With two million years to work, the Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky.
The Black Canyon - Colorado
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick, Regan, Maggie, and Kate traveled to The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado, which just became a United States National Park in 1999. The Black Canyon is unique because it is a relatively unknown national park, so it is not crowded and campsites are available on a first come basis. The Gunnison River rushes through the canyon, creating steep walls and amazing views, especially at the Sunset View and Dragon Point lookouts. Hiking in the Black Canyon is exciting, with interesting hikes with park rangers and more adventurous hikes that go down the steep canyon walls to the river below. The local wildlife is seen throughout the park, including deer that stroll casually through the campgrounds. For a vacation that offers the full national park experience without the crowds and traffic of the more well-known parks, The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is among the most beautiful and enjoyable national parks we've visited.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, CO- South Rim
A dark scar in the earth is filled with twisting emerald green water. The advantage this canyon has over the grander one in the southwest is all 53 miles of the gorge are visible in just a few hours' drive.
There's more hiking trails in the remote northern section, but either byway offers plenty of views into this narrow, dark chasm.

Devil's Backbone - In A Colorado Minute (Week 267)
--- ---
Devil's Backbone is a very impressive long stretch of rock walls and towers near Loveland in Larimer County, Colorado. The 2,198-acre Devil's Backbone Open Space with its 12 miles of trails is free to enter and open from dusk to dawn. Exploring these rock formations and peeking through the photogenic Keyhole had been on my hiking and filming list for quite a while. This week, Scott, Whiskey and I braved the heat and blazing sun and discovered a new favorite place in nature.
The contrast between sweeping green valleys dotted with wildflowers, the rock walls and the snow-covered Rocky Mountains create an incredible vista. Other highlights include the ravens (at least we were told they were ravens) and finally making it to the Keyhole (big opening in a rock wall), which rewarded us with shade and a nice breeze (notice Whiskey sticking her face into the wind).
