Palawan WW2 memorial museum, Puerto Princesa, Philippines
In 1944 the area was controlled, as were the rest of the Philippines, by the Imperial Japanese Army which had captured the country and held the people along with US Military prisoners under brutal conditions. In Palawan American POW’s were being held in order to construct a Japanese airfield. The prisoners were held under harsh conditions with little to eat and a lack of medical care.
In 1944 the US Military returned to the Philippines to liberate the islands. The US had been sending flights over the island and had conducted a few bombing runs. The prisoners in Palawan, officially designated as Camp 10-A, had dug air raid shelters in order to escape any bombs dropped on the camp. The Japanese army had been seeing ships passing by and had endured a few raids so they knew a landing force was imminent. With each bombing run or ship sighting the treatment of the POW’s got worse.
The location of the POW Internment Camp is now a park: Plaza Cuartel located adjacent to Immaculate Conception Cathedral, the city’s main Church.
During the tour, you’ll find many interesting things inside the museum. The place is sprawling with old military warfare and vehicles. Different weapons of old are carefully preserved and showcased inside glass cases. Guns of different shapes and sizes are a sight to behold, not to mention the World War II jeep that is parked near the entrance. One of the famous artifacts displayed are the old weaponry and clothes of the Palaweño guerillas who fought in the war. Aside from weaponry and armor, paintings are posted on the wall depicting not only the Word Wars but also the cultural heritage of Palawan. There are also posters containing information on land, sea and air vehicles used in WW2.
Entering the Palawan Special Battalion WW2 Memorial Museum only costs about P30. Children below 10 years old are given free entrance. The museum is open daily from 8am to 12nn and at 1pm to 5pm.

The Palawan Special Battalion WW-II Memorial Museum was inaugurated on December 5, 2011 and officially open to the public on the day of Pearl Harbor bombing December 7, 2011. The Museum is located at Rizal Avenue Extension, Bgy. Bancao-Bancao, Puerto Princesa City and privately operated by VADM Higinio “Buddy” C. Mendoza, Jr. of Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary. VADM Higinio C. Mendoza is the son of Dr. Higinio A. Mendoza, Sr., the declared World War II Hero of Palawan.
Regular museum guide is available to assist visitors and provide necessary information everyday except Monday, from 8:00am until 5:00pm.

The Philippines is a beautiful country, and with so many adventures to choose from, the experiences you can have here are endless.
But if you’re looking for the most beautiful island in the Philippines, many would tell you to visit Palawan.
A few weeks ago, I was finally able to travel to this island for the very first time during its most exciting event of the year, the Subaraw Festival, an incredible parade about appreciating the Beauty of Nature.
The Subaraw Festival celebrates the rich and colorful biodiversity that can be found in Palawan, creatively showcased by its citizens through environmentally sustainable ways.
The parade serves as an annual message to respect and value our environment, an important reminder that marked the beginning of this journey.
The following day after the festival, my group and I travelled north to a small town known as El Nido.
And so, with my unlikely band of fellow travellers that were brought together by Zetodeals, we set sail to explore El Nido’s world famous islands and beaches, known for their extraordinary natural splendor and ecosystem.
On the third day of our stay in Palawan, we returned to Puerto Princesa, hungry to try some of the province’s local cuisine.
Thus came the time to try Palawan’s infamous Tamilok.
Our next challenge of the day was to climb through the caves of Ugong Rock.
Once on the bottom of the ocean millions of years ago, tectonic movement in the Earth’s crust caused this incredible rock formation to emerge from the sea and become the towering mountain that it is today.
It was a long way to reach it’s peak, but the experience was worth every struggle.
But of course, what goes up, must come down.
As I ascended down the foot of the mountain through the zipline, my spirit moved the opposite direction, ascending towards a mountain peak of bliss and joy.
Such is the reality of life, where you must sometimes descend to the bottom in order to appreciate the top.
With our time in Palawan about to end, there was only one thing left to visit in Puerto Princesa, which can be found within the jungles on the western coast of the island.
In this forest lies one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World. The Puerto Princesa Underground River.
Only a certain number of people can enter the cave everyday, and we were fortunate enough to be some the chosen few.
And as we sat there in the darkness, experiencing the underground river for the very first time, I listened to the tour guide in silence, learning about the ecological significance of this place, and appreciating the beauty of the cave’s wonders.
The Underground River was formed through millions of years of erosion, gradually formed through the natural forces of nature. Today, it is home to thousands of living creatures. It is a natural museum that we can use to learn about our planet’s history. And it is a source of inspiration to all who marvel at its beauty.
And so marked the end of me and my friends’ first experience in Palawan. It was definitely an adventure to remember. Defined by the paths that we took. The secrets that we found. The challenges that we conquered. The wildlife that we encountered. The food that we savored.
And although we experienced many things in the short time that we were here, we desired to stay and experience more.
For Palawan is a big island, with many places that we have yet to be discovered.
And I can’t shake the feeling that we will probably be returning to explore more of these places very soon.

NOVEMBER 17, 2014—We were on the last day and last leg of our Puerto Princesa Family Tour which started from Sabang Beach 3 days ago. We just came from Dos Palmas earlier on this day and we are all set to do a half-day city tour of Puerto Princesa before we fly back to MM later in the afternoon.
For our half-day tour we managed to visit a decent number of interesting places in the often-overlooked Puerto Princesa city proper, although I'm sure that if we had more time we could have managed to visit a few more other equally interesting places.
So here's a line up of the places we visited in Puerto Princesa City, in the order we visited them, during our short half-day city tour:

We started from the wharf right after arriving back to the Palawan mainland from Dos Palmas. At the end of our tour we went straight to the Puerto Princesa airport just in time for our flight back to Metro Manila.

The P.O.W. Palawan Massacre Memorial, Puerto Princesa
I must admit that Margie and I did very little research on the Philippine trip probably thinking, Philippines. Everybody knows about these Islands, and was completely surprised by the military sights. Nowhere did it tell on our itineraries about how many important World War II memorials there were to visit.
Vim walked us over to Plaza Cuartel on the opposite side of Immaculate Conception Cathedral and towards an engraved marker. The marker was in Tagalog, the Filipino language. A few more feet to a marker in English. I'll let you watch the video and I'm not quite sure what was more horrific. Standing and reading this or our previous visit to the Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre.
I have no words to describe our emotions other than tears....
