Vasto - Palazzo D'Avalos, il gigante malato
MICHAEL MCDERMOTT & HEATHER HORTON Live @ PALAZZO D'AVALOS VASTO - AUG 6, 2011 - IN ITALY
A heartfelt tribute to our beautiful country... Michael and Heather you are something...something...unbelievable...
The Civic Museums of the City of Vasto are hosted in the wide halls of the d'Avalos Palace, the Neapolitan garden of which opens out to the view of the fantastic landscape of the Vasto gulf. As Luigi Marchesani so greatly wished, the Archaeological Museum opened in 1849. It is the Archaeological Museum is the oldest public Museum in Abruzzo, as well as one of the most important. The materials represent a complex of homogeneous and chronologically stratified evidences of the history of the old city of Histonium and its territory from the Iron Age to the early Middle Ages. There are also sarcophagi, sculptures, jewels, amphorae, coins (coined between the 3rd and 5th centuries A.C.), besides a wonderful mosaic floor coming from the ancient thermal baths of Histonium dating back to the 1st century A.D. portraying fish, sea monsters and floral patterns.
Among the precious artworks of note are the valuable funeral dowries of the several tombs excavated in 1912-1914 in the necropolis along the Tratturo, datable between the 6th and 3rd Centuries B.C., and the two little bronze plates with inscriptions in Oscan language, coming from the Frentani sanctuary in the nearby site of Punta Penna. Also particularly interesting are the very rich epigraphic collections containing funeral epigraphs, at times with peculiar and curious texts carefully explained, big monumental epigraphs testifying to important public works, a monumental double sarcophagus for P. Paquio Sceva and his wife Flavia, and a milestone of the late archaic period from Punta Penna, relating to the Roman road running tracing the Adriatic seashore.
The Art Gallery contains a sector dedicated to contemporary painting and in particular to that of the 19th century, where one can admire works of important Vasto artists such as the Palizzi brothers, leading figures of the 19th-century Neapolitan school, Valerico Laccetti, Gabriele Smargiassi and Giulio Cesare de Litiis, and other Abruzzo painters such as Francesco Paolo Michetti and Giulio Aristide Santoro.
The Gallery of Modern Art was created instead as the natural extension of the exhibition called Mediterranea, which in 2002 unveiled to the public the works given by the Paglione partners to the Municipality of Vasto.
The Costume Museum contains a collection of paintings portraying traditional costumes and precious Abruzzo clothes dating back from the beginning of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.

On Abruzzo's southern coast, the hilltop town of Vasto has an atmospheric medieval quarter and superb sea views. Much of the centro storico (historic centre) dates from the 15th century, a period in which the city was known as 'the Athens of the Abruzzi'; it's also distinguished as the birthplace of the poet Gabriele Rossetti. Two kilometres downhill is the blowzy resort of Vasto Marina, a strip of hotels, restaurants and campgrounds fronting a long sandy beach. About 5km north of town along the coast is the beautiful Spiaggia di Punta Penna and the Riserva Naturale di Punta Aderci.
In summer the action is on the beach at Vasto Marina. In the old town, interest revolves around the small historic centre, with its landmark Castello Caldoresco, located on Piazza Rossetti, and the low-key Romanesque Cattedrale di San Giuseppe. The Renaissance Palazzo d'Avalos hosts four museums, including the Museo Archeologico. The first thing you will appreciate on arriving in Vasto are the beautiful panoramic views over the Adriatic sea, over the lovely golden beaches and towards the Punta della Penne harbour and lighthouse.
Above the sea, on a hillside, Vasto has a charming medieval old centre whose centre is the marvellous Piazza Rossetti with the impressive Caldoresco Castle. The original parts of the castle date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. The Palazzo d'Avalos is another key sight. You can visit the palace as it is now home to the Museo Civico Archaeologica. Be sure to also visit its pretty Neapolitan-style garden. Not far away is the Cattedrale di San Giuseppe which has a simple Romanesque facade. The rest is newer as it was rebuilt following destruction during a Turkish raid in the 16th century.
Wandering through the narrow alleyways is a pleasure (and offers some relief from the hot sun) and reveals many churches and mansions and also various Roman excavations. After exploring the old centre head for the beach. It is about a 15 to 20 minutes walk downhill from the ancient centre of Vasto and is a welcome spot to cool off in the gorgeous turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea.
On the coast the Vasto Marina is a popular holiday destination and has lots of hotels and camp sites along the edge of the beach. This is a nice spot to enjoy lunch or to have the almost obligatory afternoon ice-cream. Whilst thronging with people in July and August the marina and beaches are fairly deserted outside of the main season.
Further along the coast is the promontory of the 'Punta d'Erca also known as the Punta Aderci, a beautiful, unspoilt area of rocky coastline popular with divers. The area is a protected nature reserve. You can see the wonderful 'trabocchi' here. These are traditional fishing platforms used for fish and prawn fishing along the coast. Outside of the main season you can enjoy the coastline and trabocchi and barely see another person.
The old part of the town (centro storico) features a number of buildings and churches dating from the 12th-18th centuries, including:
Vasto Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Giuseppe)
Church of Santa Maria Maggiore (it), the largest and oldest (mentioned in a document as early as 1195) church in the town, with a quite tall bell tower. Damaged by the Turks in 1566, and by a fire in 1645, it received a thorough restructuring in 1735 in which it got the current shape. It hosts one of alleged Jesus' crown of thorns (Sacra Spina).
Castello Caldoresco
D'Avalos Palace (Palazzo D'Avalos) and the Musei Civici
Below the hill on which the town is located, the beach resort town of Marina di Vasto offers a large sandy beach and several hotels and other facilities.

Vasto - Palazzo d'Avalos Giardino Napoletano
