My fellow citizens, events in Iraq have now reached the final days of decision. For more than a decade, the United States and other nations have pursued patient and honorable efforts to disarm the Iraqi regime without war. That regime pledged to reveal and destroy all its weapons of mass destruction as a condition for ending the Persian Gulf War in 1991. Since then, the world has engaged in 12 years of diplomacy. We have passed more than a dozen resolutions in the United Nations Security Council. We have sent hundreds of weapons inspectors to oversee the disarmament of Iraq. Our good faith has not been returned.

In recent days, some governments in the Middle East have been doing their part. They have delivered public and private messages urging the dictator to leave Iraq, so that disarmament can proceed peacefully. He has thus far refused. All the decades of deceit and cruelty have now reached an end. Saddam Hussein and his sons must leave Iraq within 48 hours. Their refusal to do so will result in military conflict, commenced at a time of our choosing. For
their own safety, all foreign nationals, including journalists and inspectors, should leave Iraq immediately.

If we must begin a military campaign, it will be directed against the lawless men who rule your country (Iraq) and not against you. As our coalition takes away their power, we will deliver the food and medicine you need. We will tear down the apparatus of terror and we will help you to build a new Iraq that is prosperous and free. In a free Iraq, there will be no more wars of aggression against your neighbours, no more poison factories, no more executions of dissidents, no more torture chambers and rape rooms. The tyrant will soon be gone. The day of your liberation is near.

Our government is on heightened watch against these dangers. Just as we are preparing to ensure victory in Iraq, we are taking further actions to protect our homeland. In recent days, American authorities have expelled from the country certain individuals with ties to Iraqi intelligence services. Among other measures, I have directed additional security of our airports, and increased Coast Guard patrols of major seaports. The Department of Homeland
Security is working closely with the nation's governors to increase armed security at critical facilities across America. Should enemies strike our country, they would be attempting to shift our attention with panic and weaken our morale with fear. In this, they would fail. No act of theirs can alter the course or shake the resolve of this country. We are a peaceful people, yet we're not a fragile people, and we will not be intimidated by thugs and killers. If our enemies dare to strike us, they and all who have aided them, will face fearful consequences. We are now acting because the risks of inaction would be far greater.

Trump's New DC Hotel Vandalized with Graffiti
(2 Oct 2016) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus064237
Donald Trump's new luxury hotel in downtown Washington has been vandalized.
District of Columbia police say someone spray-painted the phrases black lives matter and no justice no peace on the front of the building on Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday, the phrases were covered up with pieces of plywood.
Police spokeswoman Aquita Brown said Sunday that police have not identified any suspects. The incident occurred just after 4 p.m. Saturday, and police are investigating.
Tourists say that the graffiti was unwarranted. The Stevenson family who was visiting from Louisville, Kentucky passed by the boarded up hotel exterior, which is at a side entrance to the hotel. Sherice Stevenson is a supporter of Hillary Clinton while her daughter 13-year-old Wanda is Trump supporter. Yet both agreed peaceful protests should be the way to express opinions instead of vandalism.
The Trump International Hotel opened on Sept. 12. The Trump Organization won a 60-year lease from the federal government to transform the historic Old Post Office building on Pennsylvania Avenue into a hotel. Rooms at the hotel start at just under $400 a night, down from nearly $900 a night when the hotel opened.

Watch: The Washington Nationals’ championship parade
A parade honoring the Washington Nationals’ historic World Series win against the Houston Astros is scheduled for Saturday, November 2, at 2 p.m. ET. Join Washington Post reporter Libby Casey and others for live coverage of the celebration. The Nationals are the first team in major league history to win the World Series by claiming four games on the road. They beat the Astros, 6-2, in Game 7 to secure the franchise’s first title and Washington’s first World Series championship since 1924, when the Senators topped the New York Giants in seven games.
While the final game was held in Houston, fans gathered across the city and at the stadium in Navy Yard to watch. They wore shark hats in honor of the team’s unofficial anthem, the children’s song “Baby Shark.” Watch the moment the ballpark erupted in celebration after the victory: Read more: Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube:

U.S. Senate: Impeachment Trial (Day 9)
The Senate impeachment trial of President Trump continues as Senators ask House impeachment managers and the President’s defense team questions.
Bunker turned FEMA disaster headquarters
In the late 1950s and early '60s, the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union was heating up and the threat of nuclear war was a very real possibility. To prepare for that threat, the U.S. government began building a series of underground bunkers to protect federal civil defense workers who would respond to the aftermath of a nuclear strike. One of those bunkers was built outside Dallas, in the city of Denton.

Citizen Engagement in America’s History
Join us for a cross-generational and bipartisan discussion about how citizen movements have influenced – or failed to influence – policymakers. From Civil Rights marches to student activism in the social media age, citizen activists will join a panel with former members of Congress who will discuss how in their careers on Capitol Hill citizens changed their thinking on specific topics. The conversation will focus civic engagement, civic education, and how to petition the government. Moderated by Former Member of Congress Jane Harman (D-CA), panelists include D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton; Sarah Lerner, teacher of English and Journalism at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, with student Rain Valladares; Former Member of Congress Phil Gingrey (R-GA); and Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List.

She may no longer be a member of the Royal Family but Diana, Princess of Wales, is still being feted as royalty in the United States. Her reputation undented by her recent divorce from Prince Charles the Princess took breakfast at the White House Tuesday with Hillary Rodham Clinton and a hundred and twenty guests. It was the first engagement of a day-long fashion-led charity-mission, culminating in Diana's attendance at a gala fund-raising dinner at the White House.

I want to welcome all of you and particularly our guest of honour, Diana, Princess of Wales. I was thinking as I met her in the Blue Room that this is one of the nicest British invasions that the White House has ever had. The other one as some of you might remember from history burned the place down but now we have the metaphorical equivalent of that excitement here at the White House.

Eric Owen Moss: “I’ll See It When I Believe It”
Eric Owen Moss, MArch ’72, was born in Los Angeles, California. In 1973, after completing his studies at UCLA, UC Berkeley, and Harvard Graduate School of Design, he founded Eric Owen Moss Architects. Today, his firm is an award-winning 25-person office that designs and constructs projects in the United States and around the world. As documented in monographs on the firm’s work, such as Eric Owen Moss Construction Manual 1988–2008 (2009), Moss has placed a distinct emphasis on the act and process of building. His many essays on design theory and reflections on architecture as a discipline have been published in collections including Gnostic Architecture (1999) and Who Says What Architecture Is (2007). His most recent book The New City: I’ll See It When I Believe It (2016) documents his rehabilitation of more than fifty buildings in the Hayden Tract between Los Angeles and Santa Monica: that abandoned industrial district was transformed into an enclave of creative and new media companies, made possible by his close, decades-long collaboration with a developer.
Moss has lectured widely and held teaching positions at major universities around the world, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and the Royal Academy in Copenhagen. A longtime professor at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), he served as its director from 2002 to 2015. Among the many honors he has received are the AIA|LA Educator of the Year in 2006; the Most Admired Educator Award from the Design Futures Council in 2013; and the Jencks Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects, in 2011. In 2014 he was inducted into the National Academy and in 2016 he received the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art.
