Welcome to Paradise
140 years ago a Russian ship discovered the land of New Guinea. The local population studied Russian language and worshipped Nikolay Miklukho-Maklay, the pioneer world traveler.
140 years later, history has repeated itself with a new generation of Russian pioneers arriving on the island to once again support the development of the island and its people.
From the skies arrived a giant Russian aircraft. Local inhabitants stood in amazement as they watched this great white bird land in the wilderness of the Papua jungle.
To this day, reality merges with fairy tale in Papua New Guinea.

Safe Cities Part 2: Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea
The Safe Cities Part 2 video revisits Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea to explore the current circumstances of that city's marketplaces. It shows the progress made during the first phase of implementation of this Safe Cities pilot programme. Jointly implemented by UN Women and the National Capital District Commission (NCDC), the project is also supported by the New Zealand Aid Programme, the Government of Spain and the Australian Aid Programme (AusAID). During a recent visit from Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard to one of the intervention sites, Gerehu Market, Australia confirmed its support to the programme over the next five years.
This documentary is the second in a series of films produced by UN Women on the continuing growth of the Safe Cities Programme in Port Moresby. Featuring or voices from market vendors to Members of Parliament, the film explores how the Safe Cities Programme is continuing to make selected city markets safer for women and girls based on the belief that well-designed and implemented interventions have the potential for high impact in reducing fear and curbing violence against women in the public sphere. Both social and physical infrastructure are examined in this celebration of both the programme's current achievements and its ongoing efforts to create safer public spaces in the city of Port Moresby.

Part 1 of my South Pacific Trip.
I fly into the danger zone, otherwise known as PNG's capital city. With a reputation for carjacking, violence, machete attacks (all down to those pesky Raskols) I brave the mean streets and find that the city is not as bad as is made out.
That said, there is a definite edge, but everyone I came across was friendly and welcoming.

We must be very cautious about our actions, because it might cause harm to others.

Safe Cities: Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea 2012
Port Moresby is one of five pilot cities -- along with Quito, Kigali, New Delhi and Cairo -- participating in UN Women's Global Programme Safe Cities Free of Violence against Women and Girls. Operating successfully since its December 2010 launch, the project, entitled Port Moresby: A Safer City for Women and Girls, aims to develop, test, evaluate and disseminate a model that makes cities safer for women and girls.
Port Moresby -- Papua New Guinea's capital -- is characterized by poor and crowded living conditions, a growing population with high urban migration, increasing cultural diversity and ethnic tensions, and a widening gap between rich and poor. It has been ranked as one of the five least-liveable cities in the world based on scores in five areas: stability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. Large natural resource extraction projects in mining, petroleum and liquefied natural gas have generated solid increases in GDP over the last decade, but economic growth has not translated into the development of the country or its people.
The city's violent crime threatens the safety and security of all citizens, particularly women and girls, who live in fear of physical and verbal sexual harassment and assault and are too often victims of these and other forms of gender-based violence. The city's marketplaces are among the most unsafe public spaces where gambling, drinking, drug sales and consumption, rape, gang rape, sexual harassment, intimidation and ethnic fights occur on a daily basis. Consequently, the markets provide the key entry point for mobilising residents to make their city safer by deepening the understanding of every citizen's rights and responsibilities and promoting women's leadership and participation in efforts to improve governance in the markets.
