Places to see in ( Albi - France ) Park Rochegude
Located in the Cordeliers cultural district, the Rochegude Park, ranked Remarkable Garden in 2010, is an emblematic place of the city. Classic French garden, English garden, bird island, remarkable trees, waterfall ... everything invites you to relax in the park Rochegude. Created in the 19th century, this public park was originally a private park, that of Admiral Pascal de Rochegude.
Rear-Admiral and deputy to the Convention, died March 16, 1834, he bequeathed to the city of Albi by will of August 10, 1826 and his codicils of 1832 and 1833, his hotel with its outbuildings and its rich library. In 1834, the town had to seek the agreement of King Louis-Philippe to accept these legacies, which was granted. Upon the death of the Admiral's niece, the hotel was turned into a museum and library. As for the park, it was open to the public.
The Rochegude Park, green lung of Albi of four hectares is articulated around three distinct parts, the Renaissance Hotel, become municipal library then place of exhibition, the French gardens of carved boxwood punctuated with bins of orangery and the English-style section below, on the site of the former farm with vegetable garden, meadow and orchard.
Botany enthusiast, HP de Rochegude asked the city, in return for his legacy, the planting of dozens of remarkable trees: libocèdre, California umbellulaire, sequoia sempervirens, plane trees, magnolias, bald cypresses, are then planted.
Throughout his life, the Admiral had a vow to see his park become a botanical garden one day. The presence of rare species and the planting of various and varied species contribute greatly. The Rochegude Park remains an invaluable heritage for the city of Albi and a public garden of great quality that deserves the attention and respect of all.

Places to see in ( Albi - France ) Cathedrale Sainte Cecile
The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Cecilia, also known as Albi Cathedral, is the most important Catholic building in Albi, France and is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Albi. First built as a fortress in the aftermath of the Albigensian Crusade; begun in 1282 and under construction for 200 years, it is claimed to be the largest brick building in the world. In 2010 the cathedral was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The present cathedral was preceded by other buildings. The first dated from the fourth century and in 666 was destroyed by fire. The second is recorded in 920 by the name of Saint Cecilia, the present-day patroness of musicians. It was replaced in the thirteenth century by a Romanesque cathedral in stone.
The Brick Gothic cathedral was constructed in brick between 1287 and 1480 in the wake of the crusade against Cathar Church, a heterodox non-trinitarian dualist movement with an episcopal see at Albi around 1165 AD. Pope Innocent III initiated a crusade (Cathar Crusade, 1209–1229) to extinguish Catharism in southern France, with great loss of life. In the aftermath of the bloodshed, the cathedral's dominant presence and fortress-like exterior were intended to convey the power and authority of the trinitarian Roman Catholic Church. The instigator of the cathedral's construction was Bernard de Castanet, Roman Catholic Bishop of Albi and Inquisitor of Languedoc. Work on the nave was completed about 1330.
The cathedral is built in the Southern Gothic Style. As suitable building stone is not found locally, the structure is built almost entirely of brick. Notable architectural features include the bell-tower (added in 1492), which stands 78 metres (256 ft) tall, and the doorway by Dominique de Florence (added circa 1392). The nave is the widest Gothic example in France at 60 feet (18 m). The interior lacks aisles which are replaced by rows of small chapels between brick internal buttresses, making Albi a hall church. Compared with regular Gothic, the buttreses are almost entirely submerged in the mass of the church. The principal entry is on the south side through an elaborate porch entered by a fortified stair, rather than through the west front, as is traditional in France.
The elaborate interior stands in stark contrast to the cathedral's military exterior. The central chœur, reserved for members of the religious order, is surrounded by a roodscreen with detailed filigree stone work and a group of polychrome statues. Below the organ, a fresco of the Last Judgement, attributed to unknown Flemish painters, originally covered nearly 200 m² (the central area was later removed). The frescoes on the enormous vaulted ceiling comprise the largest and oldest ensemble of Italian Renaissance painting in France. The cathedral organ, the work of Christophe Moucherel, dates from the 18th century.

Text description provided by the architects. The Albi Grand Theatre is going to transform the texture of the city as well as its cultural influence.
This building appears as an outstanding architectural symbol, on the outskirts of the historic centre.
We have given priority to the presence of the Grand Theatre instead of the cinemas, in order to organize around it a network of public spaces and of cultural facilities. The Grand Theatre will be its centre. Along the Alley of Culture, different public spaces will follow one another, punctuating a walkway going from the cathedral to the Rochegude big public park. This path begins with the creation of a square at the level of the Sibille Boulevard, then arrives on the theatre place, and continues on the cinemas place in front of the Athanor, to finally open onto the public garden. That’s the idea of an « urban walkway » animated by the succession, the juxtaposition and the interaction of several cultural buildings.
We chose to clearly identify those different buildings with places which give them an address in the city. Therefore, the preserved Athanor building is modified to create the entrance of the cinemas. It becomes the visible part of this « iceberg », offering a big lobby, with maybe some shops and a café at the square level. In the basements, we find all the screening rooms. So the base of the theatre place is totally occupied by the cinematographic complex. This layout allows us to liberate all the public space and to open it generously to the urban activity and the population.

Places to see in ( Albi - France ) Pont Vieux
Albi’s Pont-vieux is a bridge of medieval origin still in use. While visiting the city, crossing it gives you one of the most beautiful panoramas on the Berbie Palace and Saint Cecilia’s Cathedral. The link between the two banks of the Tarn, the Pont-vieux is a patrimonial element of Albi, within the UNESCO classification of the Episcopal City and classified as a historical monument since 1961.
Imagine this bridge, 151m long, safeguarded at each end by drawbridges, which explains why the arches are narrower there. It was defended at the centre by the fortified Notre Dame tower, which has since disappeared.
Looking into history: In 1040, the construction of a bridge was decided upon and funded by a portion of the revenue from the ferry operated by the chapter to cross the Tarn. At that time, France was experiencing ‘bridge fever’ due to the development of traffic, a consequence of productive, demographic and commercial growth.
In the 16th century, this bridge had a different appearance, as half-timbered 60 to 80 m2 houses straddled the roadway. 11 families lived there, tanners, shoemakers, weavers, fullers, a fruit merchant. In 1766, following a major flood of the Tarn, the city bought the damaged houses to destroy them.
In the 12th century, Albi was at an important crossroads on the routes between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, between the Basque country and Toulouse and Lyon, and between Catalonia and Paris. Fairs and markets played a key role. As a point of passage, the Pont-vieux was able to levy a toll. A very complete price list, dated 1245, includes 200 articles among which were;
foodstuffs
raw materials for tannery, tanning and the textile industry
finished products, utensils and work tools
the trade in Carmaux coal and pastels.
This document is a very rich source of information about daily life, the nature of trade in the Albi market, the diversity of measures and the nature of transport. In the Middle Ages, the Tarn was the base of an important river trade that was done on boats called scows. The Port Vielh of Albi, below the old bridge, was alive with life and various activities until the late eighteenth century. Today, scows can still be seen on the Tarn. The fleet of ‘Albi croisières’ is a nod to this historical tradition and gives a different viewpoint of the City, its bridges and its geographical location. In Albi, we enjoy cruising

Places to see in ( Albi - France ) Musee Toulouse Lautrec
Places to see in ( Albi - France ) Musee Toulouse Lautrec
The Musée Toulouse-Lautrec is an art museum in Albi, southern France, dedicated mainly to the work of the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec who was born near Albi. The museum opened in 1922 and is located in the historic center of Albi, in the Palais de la Berbie, formerly the Bishops' Palace, an imposing fortress completed at the end of the 13th century.
The museum houses over a thousand works by Toulouse-Lautrec, the largest collection in the world. It is based on a donation by Toulouse-Lautrec's mother after his death in 1901. Lodged inside the Palais de la Berbie (built in the early Middle Ages for the town's archbishop), this wonderful museum offers an overview of Albi's most celebrated son. The museum owns more than 1000 original works by Toulouse-Lautrec – the largest collection in France outside the Musée d'Orsay – spanning the artist's development, from his early neo-impressionist paintings to his famous Parisian brothel scenes and poster art.
Of particular interest are the early portraits of some of Toulouse-Lautrec's friends and family – including his mother, the Comtesse Adèle de Toulouse-Lautrec, his cousin Gabriel Tapié de Celeyran, and his close friend, Maurice Joyant. They clearly demonstrate the artist's wry eye and playful sense of humour. There are also some delicate animal studies (especially of horses).
Inevitably, however, it's the later works that draw the eye. Toulouse-Lautrec's lifelong fascination with the Parisian underworld, particularly the lives of dancers and prostitutes, is brilliantly represented. Look out for key works including L'Anglaise du Star au Havre (Englishwoman of the Star Harbour) and Les Deux Amies (The Two Friends), which depicts two prostitutes embracing while they wait for their clients. Pride of place goes to two versions of one of his most famous canvases, Au Salon de la rue des Moulins, hung side-by-side to illustrate changes in the artist's technique.
Toulouse-Lautrec's skills as a cartoonist and caricaturist also made him a pioneer of poster art, and the museum has a fantastic collection of his most famous designs in its permanent collection.
On the top floor is a small collection of works by some of his contemporaries, including Pierre Bonnard, Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Matisse.

Places to see in ( Albi - France ) Les Jardins de la Berbie
Shaded walkway, located in the heart of the Episcopal City of Albi, the gardens of the Palais de la Berbie offer a panoramic view of the banks of the Tarn, Pont-vieux, the old mills and the Sainte-Cécile cathedral. We need the palace gardens of the Berbie the will of the first archbishop of Albi, Hyacinthe Serroni, who laid out end of the XVII th century a place of pleasure in the former backyard Berbie.
The Palace having lost its defensive function, he turned the walkway into a walk. The boxwood, finely carved, make up the French garden and draw embroidery embellished with colorful plantations. The maintenance of this site is done exclusively manually by an assigned gardener. It deals with watering, weeding, hoeing and box size. Any chemical treatment is prohibited in favor of an integrated biological protection.
Walkers can stroll in the shade of the wild vine arches to contemplate masterpieces of vegetable embroidery, or greet the Four Seasons, graciously carved in marble. By their incredible finesse, these gardens come to sublimate the imposing Palais de la Berbie, which stands proudly as the worthy guardian of the work of Toulouse Lautrec. Pride of the city, the Berbie Palace and its gardens stand out as true pillars of Albigensian heritage, a protected heritage and listed since July 2010 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Places to see in ( Albi - France ) Cloitre de la Collegiale Saint Salvy
The Collegiate Church Saint-Salvi is a Catholic church located in Albi , in the south-west of France. The church has a motley appearance, a reflection of the evolution of the methods of construction, mixing Languedoc ' s Romanesque art and Gothic architecture . The break between the two styles is also opposed in materials, stone for the old and red brick for the most recent.
The duration of the project, over nearly seven centuries, was determined by the alternation of periods of good or leaner. The reading of the construction is complex for the historians, architectural evolutions being also intervened on the finished parts. The cloister adjoining it and the canourgue, a group of former residences of the canons, form with the collegiate church, a remarkable ensemble at a hundred meters from the Sainte-Cécile cathedral and the Berbie palace . They belong to the episcopal city of Albi , listed as World Heritage by UNESCO in 2010.
The collegiate church is located in the old town of Albi , in the perimeter classified by UNESCO under the episcopal city . It is the heart of the neighborhood of the same name. The church is built on a high point, reason for being the watch tower that extends the north tower. At the vii th century , the Albigensian belong to the rich Desiderii-Salvii family. One of its members left his name, Saint-Salvi at the collegiate where he is buried. It is to this character that the legend attributes the title of first bishop of the city, between 574 and 584. The collegiate church has a time, preserved its relics.
According to the historian Jean-Louis Biget , the monastery run by Salvius d'Albi is not strictly speaking an abbey, but rather a community of anchorites subjected to obedience to their abbot. This type of operation could have been inspired by the first Lérins abbey to. A period of letting go of the canons in the early xi th century, is interrupted by the introduction of the Gregorian reform . It leads to the adoption of the rule of St. Augustine . This surge of rigor is accompanied by a new architectural project of Romanesque style .
The construction of the village Saint-Salvi is part of the development of the city towards the east: the ancient castelviel, the district of the cathedral and castelnau, have brought the city out of the original rocky promontory where she was. Saint-Salvi and the district of Combes are created in the same axis. Place de la Pile, the nerve center of the Albigensian trade, was at the junction of the episcopal district and that of Saint-Salvi.
The furnishings include a fine collection of local sculptures from the late Middle Ages : a Pietà , kept in the sacristy , a crucifix , a Calvary , a Christ links and scribes and six members of the Sanhedrin. A wooden statue polychrome , probably dating from the xii th century , is the only existing representation of the saint; she was found in a galetas and is kept in the sacristy. The first excavations date from the years 1857-1861. At that time, the collegiate is enclosed in a network of terraced houses, called roda de la plassa , poorly served by the alleys.

Places to see in ( Albi - France ) Palais de la Berbie
The Berbie Palace is an old episcopal palace located in Albi , in the south-west of France. Built in the second half of the xiii th century, under the episcopate of three successive bishops, the project required fifty years. Wanted as a prestigious residence by Durand de Beaucaire , it became a fortress under Bernard II of Combret and Bernard III of Castanet , facing the hostility of the population of Albigensia, both economically and religiously, with the Cathar heresy . Thereafter, it was remodeled several times by the bishops of the city between the xvi th century and xviiii th century, gaining comfort without losing quite the austere fortress.
It was classified as a historic monument in 1862 for construction and in 1965 for isolated interior elements: ceilings, fireplace, wood paneling. Since 2010, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site by its membership of the architectural ensemble Medieval of the episcopal city of Albi . He is close to the Sainte-Cécile cathedral for which he has experienced certain architectural techniques. He shares with her and many of the old city buildings the red brick fairgrounds .
During the law of separation of the Churches and the State , the palace is seized. Since 1924, it houses the museum Toulouse-Lautrec , dedicated to the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec native of Albi. It hosts the largest collection of works by the artist.
Remarkable terracotta floors dating from the origins of the building were found in the 2000s; the research is not finished and other architectural treasures are probably still dormant. At the heart of the episcopal city, free access to its gardens makes it a place for a walk with a breathtaking view on the right bank of the Tarn and its hanging gardens or on the old medieval bridge , other sites belonging to the area classified by UNESCO.

Cagnac-les-Mines is a commune in the Tarn department in southern France. It is a former coalmining town for workers of the Compagnie minière de Carmaux. It has a mining museum, whereupon is standing a huge miners safety lamp.
The hamlet of Cagnac-le-vieux that can be located near the wells of the current Mining Museum, to the southwest (see parcel 284 on the cadastral map below), consists of the old castle and some old houses surrounded by a rampart protected by a ditch and pierced by a single door.
The seigniory of Cagnac, which was part of Castelnau-de-Lévis and was detached in 1833 to be part of the municipality of Saint-Sernin-lès-Mailhoc, which name will be replaced by that of Cagnac-les-Mines. The lordship belonged since Pons Delpuech to the xviii th century to Del Puech (Puy French)
From 1895, the new Cagnac was built and expanded quickly southeast of Cagnac-le-Vieux, on the way to Albi. Cagnacois circulate a petition to create a new town, distinct from that of Saint-Sernin-les-Mailhoc. The elected representatives who represent Saint-Sernin support this project which, however, would reduce their area. But the municipal elections of 1904 gave the majority to the representatives of the section of Cagnac who, they ask that the existing municipality is preserved and enlarged portions that Garric and Lescure have agreed to give way. The minority representatives of Saint-Sernin, rural, can not prevent the transfer of the chief town and archives to Cagnac.
For the enlarged municipality portions ceded by Garric and Lescure, the decree published in the OJ of June 12, 1910, formalizes the name change: the municipality of Saint-Sernin-les-Mailhoc takes the name of Cagnac. Around 1920, the old castle and the old houses of the hamlet of Cagnac-le-Vieux will be acquired by the SMA and be destroyed to make room for a quarry embankments for the backfilling of underground workings.
By deliberation dated May 25, 1930, the municipal council of Cagnac asks to the State that the municipality is authorized to be called Cagnac-the-Mines. The municipal council motivates its request because of the errors of routing of the mail destined to its inhabitants often directed towards Cagnac and Gagnac in Lot, Cognac in Charente, Caignac and Cagnac in Haute-Garonne. The change of name would be likely to avoid these errors. The change of name is accepted by decree onFebruary 17, 1931.
