Albi is a town on the Tarn River in southern France, northeast of Toulouse. Dominating the skyline is the 13th-century, red-brick Sainte-Cécile Cathedral, a Gothic landmark with large interior frescoes such as the dramatic “Last Judgment.” The centuries-old Palais de la Berbie houses the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, honoring the Albi-born painter. The Fashion Museum, in a former convent, shows 18th–20th-century costumes.
While it is not exactly undiscovered, Albi is one of those French provincial cities that has only recently come into its own as a tourist destination. The change in the city's fate came in 2009, when its episcopal area - comprising the cathedral and the Palais de la Berbie, the bishop's palace - was classed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
A small city standing on the banks of the river Tarn, Albi has a history rooted in the religious conflicts of the Middle Ages. The Albigensian Crusade (1209-1229) was the only medieval crusade conducted not against Islam, but against Christians, specifically against the Cathars, who practiced a form of proto-Protestantism, refusing the authority of the Catholic church.
Albi, capital of the Tarn department, is arguably the most interesting small city in the Midi-Pyrenees region. St. Cecilia's cathedral has always been a remarkable and unique monument, being both fortified and built of brick. On the outside, it looks like some gargantuan array of medieval grain silos; inside, it is all delicate gothic tracery in stone and wood, one of the finest late gothic buildings in France. Of particular interest are the massive murals of the Last judgement, that decorate the whole of the cathedral's western wall.
It is the only large gothic cathedral built out of brick rather than stone - brick being the trditional building material in the area of Albi as in nearby Toulouse and much of the Tarn and Garonne plains.
Next to the cathedral stands the similarly massive and fortified Bishop's palace, Toulouse Lautrec museum. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1864-1901, was the great post-impressionist iconographer of Parisian life in the late nineteenth century; he was a native of Albi, and the museum hosts the largest collection of his work, along with a representative collection of late 19th century French art.
Beside the west end of the cathedral, a pedestrian piazza takes you to a vantage point overlooking the river Tarn below, and the old bishop's gardens. Upstream from the cathedral can be seen the Old Bridge, a thousand years old, and still in service today. The bridge can be reached on foot by taking a short walk down the street in front of the entrance to the Toulouse Lautrec museum. The old city of Albi, with its narrow pedestrian streets and historic buildings, is clustered round the cathedral. Of particular interest is the XIIth - XIIIth collegial church of Saint Salvi, with its cloisters.

Push the door of the museum dedicated to the fabulous trip around the world of the Albigensian navigator, Lapérouse. While visiting Albi, take the Pont-Vieux which spans the Tarn to reach Botany Bay. It is from the terrace that you will enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramas on the Episcopal City: the river, the gabarres on the Tarn, the roofs of Old Alby
The Lapérouse museum , one of the seven museums of the city of Albi , is located near the Pont-Vieux , next to the Tarn . It is dedicated to the browser Lapérouse and receives nearly 12 000 visitors per year since 2010. Located in the old Albigensian mills , this place was restored in 1986, before the museum was created in 1988 by the Albi City Council and Lapérouse Albi-France (then presided over by ophthalmologist Pierre Amalric ). Simultaneously, the museum is managed by this association.
The attendance of the museum was not very important at first ( 6,500 visitors in 1993) and tending to decrease each year, a project was established by the town hall and the association to raise awareness of the museum. Thus, by setting up at least one exhibition per year, the organization of meetings, with the enrichment of the contents of the museum and the organization of visits for school children and entertainment for children on Thursday an increase in attendance was generated.
The museum mainly presents the history of the Albigensian navigator Jean-François de La Pérouse, his journey (from the beginning to the end of his journey) and the scientific expeditions carried out in Vanikoro since the sinking. Secondarily, it also evokes his family, the great expeditions of the late xviii th century , browsers that preceded the Pacific , contemporaries of his time and the towns of Albi and Brest as they were at his time.
A total of 640 exhibits are on display at the museum, including various elements of La Perouse's ships ( La Boussole and Astrolabe ), more or less voluminous, as well as other objects found on the site of the sinking and even on the Paiou camp. . With also, various models, paintings, objects that belonged to the family of La Perouse and many others. These works come from several sources including donations and loans, from individuals, other museums or directly from the Salomon association which carries out scientific research in Vanikoro and analyzes the remains. The documentary panels posted are, in turn, the property of the City Council of Albi.

It was built in a time when the pope felt compelled to make it clear that the only acceptable Christianity was Roman-style. Cagnac-les-Mines is a commune in the Tarn department in southern France. It is a former coalmining town for workers of the Compagnie minière de Carmaux. It has a mining museum, whereupon is standing a huge miners safety lamp.
The hamlet of Cagnac-le-vieux that can be located near the wells of the current Mining Museum, to the southwest (see parcel 284 on the cadastral map below), consists of the old castle and some old houses surrounded by a rampart protected by a ditch and pierced by a single door.
The seigniory of Cagnac, which was part of Castelnau-de-Lévis and was detached in 1833 to be part of the municipality of Saint-Sernin-lès-Mailhoc, which name will be replaced by that of Cagnac-les-Mines. The lordship belonged since Pons Delpuech to the xviii th century to Del Puech (Puy French)
From 1895, the new Cagnac was built and expanded quickly southeast of Cagnac-le-Vieux, on the way to Albi. Cagnacois circulate a petition to create a new town, distinct from that of Saint-Sernin-les-Mailhoc. The elected representatives who represent Saint-Sernin support this project which, however, would reduce their area. But the municipal elections of 1904 gave the majority to the representatives of the section of Cagnac who, they ask that the existing municipality is preserved and enlarged portions that Garric and Lescure have agreed to give way. The minority representatives of Saint-Sernin, rural, can not prevent the transfer of the chief town and archives to Cagnac.
For the enlarged municipality portions ceded by Garric and Lescure, the decree published in the OJ of June 12, 1910, formalizes the name change: the municipality of Saint-Sernin-les-Mailhoc takes the name of Cagnac. Around 1920, the old castle and the old houses of the hamlet of Cagnac-le-Vieux will be acquired by the SMA and be destroyed to make room for a quarry embankments for the backfilling of underground workings.
By deliberation dated May 25, 1930, the municipal council of Cagnac asks to the State that the municipality is authorized to be called Cagnac-the-Mines. The municipal council motivates its request because of the errors of routing of the mail destined to its inhabitants often directed towards Cagnac and Gagnac in Lot, Cognac in Charente, Caignac and Cagnac in Haute-Garonne. The change of name would be likely to avoid these errors. The change of name is accepted by decree onFebruary 17, 1931.

Located in the Cordeliers cultural district, the Rochegude Park, ranked Remarkable Garden in 2010, is an emblematic place of the city. Classic French garden, English garden, bird island, remarkable trees, waterfall ... everything invites you to relax in the park Rochegude. Created in the 19th century, this public park was originally a private park, that of Admiral Pascal de Rochegude.
Rear-Admiral and deputy to the Convention, died March 16, 1834, he bequeathed to the city of Albi by will of August 10, 1826 and his codicils of 1832 and 1833, his hotel with its outbuildings and its rich library. In 1834, the town had to seek the agreement of King Louis-Philippe to accept these legacies, which was granted. Upon the death of the Admiral's niece, the hotel was turned into a museum and library. As for the park, it was open to the public.
The Rochegude Park, green lung of Albi of four hectares is articulated around three distinct parts, the Renaissance Hotel, become municipal library then place of exhibition, the French gardens of carved boxwood punctuated with bins of orangery and the English-style section below, on the site of the former farm with vegetable garden, meadow and orchard.
Botany enthusiast, HP de Rochegude asked the city, in return for his legacy, the planting of dozens of remarkable trees: libocèdre, California umbellulaire, sequoia sempervirens, plane trees, magnolias, bald cypresses, are then planted.
Throughout his life, the Admiral had a vow to see his park become a botanical garden one day. The presence of rare species and the planting of various and varied species contribute greatly. The Rochegude Park remains an invaluable heritage for the city of Albi and a public garden of great quality that deserves the attention and respect of all.
