Cottage Du Vin | Midi Pyrenees | France | Oliver's Travels
Video by © In the Pocket Studios, James Vellacott
Set amongst the bucolic landscapes of the Golden Triangle of the Tarn, with views of vineyards and stunning countryside, this is a charming home for those looking to experience the laid-back atmosphere and idyllic villages of ‘French Tuscany’.
This characterful cottage was once an old winery but has now been lovingly converted into a spacious holiday home of a beautiful standard. All on one level, the cottage features two lovely bedrooms with Egyptian cotton sheets and hotel-quality towels plus a family bathroom with a bath and separate walk-in shower. Both of the bedrooms have super-king size beds or one can be made up as a twin, making this a perfect option for couples, friends and small families.
Picture-book windows look out over the nearby fields and vineyards from the large open-plan living-dining room and kitchen, a great place to prepare a feast using the finest local produce or why not hire a professional chef during your stay. You may prefer to cook al-fresco; the barbecue is in a picturesque setting in an orchard with a romantic gazebo and beautiful countryside views.
French windows from the open-plan living space lead out to a charming walled garden with a table and chairs for your morning coffee or lunch. You’ll also find an inviting plunge pool, ideal for summer days or warm balmy evenings as the terrace is beautifully lit up.
Just across the lane at the back of the cottage is the grand Manoir Du Vin which can be rented separately or alongside the cottage for larger groups. The original Maison de Maitre has its own private swimming pool and both homes are self-contained and private from each other.
Set on the edge of a little hamlet, the nearest village is only 3km away and features a boulangerie, a bank and a couple of grocery stores including a family-owned business selling local artisan products. Just ten minutes away is the historic town Gaillac, famous world-wide for its fine wines using rare grape varieties, which you can sample in the town’s Maisons des Vins or surrounding vineyards.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Albi is 25 minutes away and you can also discover a wealth of idyllic hilltop bastide villages nearby such as Castelnau-de-Montmiral, Cordes-sur-Ciel, Puycelci and Bruniquel, some of which are classified as France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’.
Cycling is hugely popular around these parts (watch out for Le Tour de France nearby in July 2019!), as is walking with some spectacular trails across the region. There’s a magnificent golf course near Albi and if you fancy canoeing then a trip to the Averyon gorges is a must, whilst those less active can maybe just enjoy the atmospheric Sunday morning market in Saint-Antonin Noble Val.
If you’re craving city life, head to Toulouse or even Carcassonne, both worthy of a fine day out. That said, you may prefer to spend your time in the peaceful surroundings of the Cottage Du Vin with its lovely interiors and splendid setting.
Manoir & Cottage Du Vin | Midi Pyrenees | France | Oliver's Travels
Video by © In the Pocket Studios, James Vellacott
Set amongst the bucolic landscapes of the Golden Triangle of the Tarn, with views of vineyards and sunflower fields around you, this is an exceptional home for those looking to experience the laid-back atmosphere and idyllic villages of the ‘French Tuscany’.
The Manoir is the original Maison de Maitre and has been converted into a beautiful and restful home for eight guests. Every comfort has been thought of, such as the Egyptian cotton sheets, hotel-quality bath and pool towels and Sonos speakers in every one of the four en-suite bedrooms. Indeed, the owners wish to create the feeling that guests are staying in a contemporary boutique hotel yet with the character and comfort of their own historical home.
Sip fine Gaillac wine by the fireplace listening to the high-end music system in the relaxing lounge or keen musicians can play the beautifully tuned Broadwood grand piano. Browse the many novels and reference works in the elegant library or sit back in your cinema seat in the movie room where a HD projector will play a great film or you can watch Sky or Netflix on the Apple TV. The beautiful kitchen and dining room are fit for a feast and you can hire your own private professional chef to prepare a meal to remember.
Yet on warm sunny days it’s all about the outdoors whether you are dining al-fresco looking out towards the vineyards or relaxing by the infinity swimming pool with mesmerising views of summer sunflowers. The glorious gardens are filled with lavender, roses and olive trees and here you can sense the tranquillity of the region. There’s also a delightful Pigeonnier, so typical of the Tarn yet this one has been uniquely converted into a poolside bar, gym and hamman over three floors. From the very top you can even peep through to see the majestic Pyrénées.
Just across the lane from the Manoir, yet self-contained and private, is the characterful Cottage Du Vin which is included in the rental rate for 12 guests or can also be rented separately. All on one level and suitable for guests with restricted mobility, the cottage was formerly the old winery. It has now been lovingly converted into a spacious holiday home of a high standard.
Picture-book windows look out over the nearby fields and vineyards from the cottage's open-plan living-dining room and kitchen whilst French doors lead out to the charming walled garden, the perfect spot for morning coffee or a dip in the inviting plunge pool. There’s also a pretty orchard with a romantic gazebo and barbecue with great views of the surrounding countryside.
Two lovely bedrooms with fine bed-linen and towels plus a family bathroom including a walk-in shower complete this pretty abode. This could be the perfect spot for grandparents or friends looking for a little more privacy yet just a few steps away from the grand Manoir.
Set on the edge of a little hamlet, the nearest village is only 3km away and features a boulangerie, bank and a couple of grocery stores including a family-owned business selling local artisan products. Turenne (France) -- Heavy Morning Mists in the Valley Below

We liked Turenne so much, we hoped to get back there, but we were only in the region for a week. This place really merits some of your time, we feel.
The road to the top of the mountain, where a castle is, was marked closed except to residents (?) but as it was already off-season and very early in the day, my spouse drove up anyway. It was frightening. You will need sutrdy support footwear for a visit here, and this is not a place for the disabled. I AM disabled, so this was a real challenge. Take some water, tissue, a snack, and go very slowly, because up here it's vertical.
We stayed for a week in a rented 17th century furnished house in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne in the Corrèze département. The Quercy region is renowned and a big British presence has been here for centuries, since the Hundred Years War.
The Lot département boasts 540 sites of historical interest.
The Dorgogne River region of France is reputed for the production of tobacco, corn, apples and other fruit, walnuts, foie gras and many artisinal products, including those made from goats. Many villages have histories going back to Roman times, and if you like cave men, caves and fishing, wow, you will love it around here!
I will gladly put you in touch with our landlady who rented us the house. The price was very reasonable but of course costs vary depending on the month.
She does not speak English.
