Fuerteventura | Corralejo Sand Dunes - Parque Natural de Corralejo
Parque Natural de Corralejo is one of the main natural attractions on Fuerteventura. Turquoise water and near-white sandy beaches attracts both leisure tourists, surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers from nearby and afar.
The natural park stretches around 12 - 12,5 km from north to south and owns a width of around 2 - 2,5 km.
Contrary to belief, the sand dunes of Corralejo is not from Sahara, and the sand found is unique to Fuerteventura, it contains biogenic grains of local marine origin and therefore not quartz grains found in Sahara, giving the dunes of Sahara a more redish hue.

Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo. Corralejo, FUERTEVENTURA, SPAIN
South of Corralejo there is the 11 km long dune area of the National Park (Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo).
The sand is very light-coloured and fine. From the beach you have a fantastic view of the islands Los Lobos and Lanzarote.

Places to see in ( Canary Islands - Spain ) Parque Natural de Corralejo
Corralejo Natural Park is the best place to go to enjoy the desert beauty of Fuerteventura. This coastal zone, measuring 2.5 by 10.5 kilometres, is located in the north-east of the island and has two contrasting but nevertheless harmonious sides. In the north, alongside the large tourist resort of Corralejo is the biggest dune spread in the whole of the Canary Islands; an enormous extension of white sands bathed by the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. To the south, the opposite awaits: a volcanic landscape, red and ochre, dramatic and rugged.
The FV-1 road, which connects the island capital Puerto del Rosario to the town of Corralejo, passes by the national park, but you’ll have to park your car and explore the park on foot. To enjoy Corralejo’s fabulous beaches, be sure to bring a towel, drinking water, sun cream and a bathing suit unless you are a fan of nude sunbathing.
To really immerse yourself in the volcanic landscape you’ll need to bring walking boots to climb the 300 metres up the Montaña Roja (Red Mountain) volcano and a camera to take incredible shots of Lanzarote and La Graciosa across the water and to immortalise the experience.

Corralejo Natural Park is by far the best place to go to enjoy the desert beauty of Fuerteventura and some say the whole of the Canary Islands. This protected coastal zone measures 2.5 by 10.5 kilometres and is located in the north-east of the island just outside of Corralejo town. It is easily accessible on foot, bike and public transport, some hotels even offer a shuttle bus service to and from the area.

A drive through the Corralejo Dunes in Fuerteventura | Sand Dunes of Corralejo
I had to drive along the road that goes through the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park in Fuerteventura (Parque natural de Corralejo). I love driving along this stretch of road, particularly south to north. Seeing the landscape, the beautiful clear turquoise sea and the beautiful white sand dunes always reminds me why I came to live in Fuerteventura.
I am sure it must rank as one of the most beautiful roads in the world.
The road goes past the most beautiful of all Fuerteventura beaches. Corralejo beaches video -
The plan is to close this road to through traffic once the new road fully opens. I will be sorry when that happens although I do understand that so much traffic driving through the dunes is not a good thing.
