Viengxai Pathet Lao Leader Caves
My friend Jim Harris took this video about five years ago when I got a grant to put together a collection of videos about Laos and I was able to pay for Jim and another friend, Sith (Lao) to travel with me to Laos. If anyone wants to gain a better understanding of Laos they need to visit the Pathet Lao Leader Caves in Viengxai and hopefully ready a book about the Secret War first, like Roger Warner's Shooting Down the Moon. Viengxai is about 45 minutes from Sam Neua and is in a valley filled with these medium-sized limestone karsts that are riddled with caves. The Pathet Lao developed a number of these caves for their leaders to work in safe from American bombing. They worked in these caves from the early 60's to the early 70's. To tour the caves you have to visit a building in the small town of Viengxai to hopefully find an English-speaking guide ready to lead a tour. You cannot tour the caves without an official guide. The guides we've gone with have always been friendly and competent and pretty good English speakers. Bai and I went with her father and mother a couple of years ago and since Bai's dad worked in one of the caves the guide was spending a lot of time asking Bai's dad questions to learn more about what life was like working in the caves during the Secret War. In this video you'll see us walking through several of the caves, I think first starting with Khamtay's cave. If I had a ton of time I would put some captions, but just uploading videos takes a lot of time and I had to edit this so that it fit under the ten minute time limit. The Lao man holding the brief case was the Deputy Director of the National Library of Laos and the Lao woman is the Children's Librarian and I had paid for them to come to Sam Neua to provide a training for teachers who would be receiving book box libraries Jim and I had donated money for (about 15). You can see videos on our channel that show some of the training and one handover ceremony.

The Secret Caves of Laos
The bombing of Laos by American forces during the conflict in Vietnam in the 1960s was called the Secret War. Now a little-known story of survival has emerged, of more than 20-thousand people who lived in a hidden city of underground caves for 9 years. Martin Lowe travelled to Houaphanh Province in northern Laos to find out what happened.

Samneua laos về chiều
Xam Neua is located in a valley in the Houaphan Province. In the early morning hours women wash clothes in the river flowing through the city. An elementary school is located near the main bridge crossing this river. At 5:45 am and pm each day there are public addresses from loudspeakers atop a tower on the school playground, expounding on the communist life and philosophy. These addresses are usually accompanied by Lao music. It is reputed there is a Communist re-education camp located in Xam Neua, and that it was the Pathet Lao capital during the Laotian Civil War Battle of Lima Site 85 (LS-85) 11 March 1968. It is near the Pathet Lao refuges in the Viengxay caves, which the Lao government hopes to promote as a tourism destination similar to the Củ Chi tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, and the Killing Fields Memorial near Phnom Penh in Cambodia. It is also near the Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area, (pronounced naam et poo loo-ee).[1]

-These caves have been kept strictly off limits but now they are open to curious visitors.
Tour guides and their groups visit the hideouts of the Lao communist party in the 1960s, which was known as the hidden city. There, they planned attacks against the Americans from the early 60's.
The Communist party chief established a base in these caves in 1964 and moved the politburo and central committee office there.

Vieng Xai to Sam Neua 28 kms - Laos Day 2
Waking up on Thursday morning I decided to make the short ride to Sam Neua and stay for a day as I was interested to see what the town was like and the next place after that, Phonsavan, was 230 kms on.
I woke slowly revisiting the Indian restaurant for the set breakfast at 7.00 a.m. which was huge, two boiled eggs, fresh fruit and an Indian flatbread filled with veggies, a coffee too and I was set for the day.
It was really nice to only have to do a short ride to Sam Neua and I arrived around 11.00 a.m. riding around town until I found a quiet hotel at the back of town overlooking the park.
I visited Yuni Coffee in the afternoon and then chilled on my hotel balcony escaping the sun as it was unbelievably hot that day. In the evening I walked across the park to the night market and enjoyed some nice food before turning in.
Sam Neua is interesting in that it is a small mountain town without any real tourist industry. As with all places like this it is just interesting to walk around and see what the locals do.
Anyway, enough rambling, a good stop off in Sam Neua...
A Visit to the Mysterious Vietnam War POW Caves of Vieng Xai, Northern Laos.
This is video from a visit to the remote POW caves of Vieng Xai, northern Laos, by way of explaining how my novel BACK links together the Vietnam War and a modern-day backpacker jungle trek. The fate of US POWs left behind after the war in jungles and caves of Laos is central to the plot of the book.
I didn’t shoot the footage intending to use it for this, but I think it’s good enough to convey an impression of the caves, with explanatory captions throughout about how the Vietnam War, missing US POWs and modern-day backpackers trekking through the remote jungles of Laos, all combine in the plot of my crossover novel BACK.

The Battle of Lima Site 85, also called Battle of Phou Pha Thi, was fought as part of a military campaign waged during the Vietnam War and Laotian Civil War by the Vietnam People’s Army and the Pathet Lao, against airmen of the United States Air Force 1st Combat Evaluation Group, elements of the Royal Laos Army, Royal Thai Border Patrol Police, and the Central Intelligence Agency-led Hmong Clandestine Army. The battle was fought on Phou Pha Thi mountain in Houaphanh Province, Laos, on 10 March 1968, and derives its name from the mountaintop where it was fought or from the designation of a 700 feet landing strip in the valley below, and was the largest single ground combat loss of United States Air Force members during the Vietnam War.During the Vietnam War and the Laotian Civil War, Phou Pha Thi mountain was an important strategic outpost which had served both sides at various stages of the conflict. In 1966, the United States Ambassador to Laos approved a plan by the United States Air Force to construct a TACAN site on top of Phou Pha Thi, as at the time they lacked a navigation site with sufficient range to guide U.S.
