sam neua city (ซำเหนือ)
sam neua city (ซำเหนือ)
Xam Neua (ຊຳເໜືອ [sám nɨ̌a]; sometimes transcribed as Sam Neua or Samneua; literally northern swamp) is the capital city of Houaphan Province, Laos, located in the northeast of the country. Xam Neua is one of the country's least visited provincial capitals.
Residents are mostly Lao, Vietnamese and Hmong, along with some Thai Dam, Thai Daeng and Thai Lu.
Several guesthouses are located in Xam Neua. While many people in Xam Neua have had little or no contact with Caucasians - or foreigners in general - the guesthouses and restaurants have postings/menus in English. There are two flights into and out of the Xam Neua airport each day.
Xam Neua is located in a valley in the Houaphan Province. In the early morning hours women wash clothes in the river flowing through the city. An elementary school is located near the main bridge crossing this river. At 5:45 am and pm each day there are public addresses from loudspeakers atop a tower on the school playground, expounding on the communist life and philosophy. These addresses are usually accompanied by Lao music. It is reputed there is a Communist re-education center located in Xam Neua.

Laos the world's most bombed country
Laos is the most heavily bombed country, per capita, in the world. Between 1964 and 1973, the United States dropped more than 2.5 million tons of munitions on Laos (more than what the U.S. dropped in World War II on Germany and Japan combined). Laos was being bombed back to the stone age thanks to The CIA's Secret War in Laos during the Vietnam War.

INDOCHINA without visas 2nd series Laos
Mekong — one of the greatest rivers of Asia and the biggest river of Indochina — extends from Tibet to the South China Sea.
Around the Laotian-Cambodian border during the rainy season, Mekong spreads on 14 kilometers, forming currents, rifts and falls. Rocks, islands and islets stick out of the water.
The biggest of them — Don Det Island. It is also the largest tourist center of the region. Here, there are hotels and guesthouses, restaurants and cafes. From here, the tourist routes to the largest waterfalls begin.
People lived on the banks of the Mekong River since ancient times. They grew rice, founded cities, built monasteries and temples.
The ancient Buddhist temple Wat Poh was founded in the 5th century AD. Not much remained until our days, from this monastery that was once a large one.
The capital of Laos isn't among the tourist destinations. The Buddhist temples are here. But they are not museum like, that interests only the tourists, but alive. Local people, the majority of who consider themselves Buddhists, come here to pray and to talk to the monks, bring donations and flowers.
To Vang Vieng, the fans of active travel are attracted by the rocks of bizarre shapes, and the numerous karst caves in its suburbs.
Luang Prabang — the city of monasteries and temples. The most touristic city of Laos. Almost all the houses in downtown are reconstructed into hotels and guesthouses, cafes and restaurants. And the central street turned into a large souvenir market, under the open sky.
