With the current political situation and rains, many of you may feel bored. Why not get out and about keep yourself active? But it's raining you may say. Our special report today suggests an indoor activity that the whole family can enjoy: That's a visit to Thalang National Museum.
Located about 200 metres from the Two Heroines Monument on the road to Paklok, the Thalang National Museum in Phuket was established in 1985 to commemorate the 200th year anniversary of the Thalang Battle, in which two leading ladies led local villagers to fight back Burmese invaders. Formed by Phuket people with the cooperation, support and now run by the Department of Fine Arts, the museum is a repository of Phuket history, archaeological and cultural heritage and its surrounding areas. The museum is a perfect place if visitors wish to learn about local way of life. The facilities comprise five permanent galleries, one changing gallery and the outdoor exhibition of a Sea Gypsy village. Entering the museum, you would get into the main Hall where the historical background of Thailand is displayed. Getting inside in the Gallery 1, one can enjoy getting to know Phuket Island's early inhabitants of the Andaman. This is presented in the form of a mini-theater, giving visitors glimpses of the tin mining era until more recently when it become a famous tourist destination. Gallery 2 features life-sized dioramas or 3D displays of the important scene of the Thalang Battle some 200 years ago. Gallery 3 features Chinese traditions and Phuket development. These include Sino-Portuguese style architectural buildings which illustrate Phuket's wealth-building tin mining era. Gallery 4 illustrates other ethnic groups living on Phuket Island. They exhibit life styles of Muslims, Thais, & Sea Gypsies including their notable boat floating ceremony. There is also space for a changing gallery where exhibition change according to function and special occasions. There is also an outdoor exhibition of a Sea Gypsy village within the museum premised. It displays their houses, fishing tools and life styles. Ajima Nookong, the museum curator, said it not only aims at tourist visitors, but also encourages visits from local schools as she wishes the museum to be part of learning sources for the Andaman communities, somewhere local children can learn about their history. 'We are now organizing 'Family Days' on Sundays with special activities on the cultural ground. Visitors can take part in the program which offers local lifestyle, plays and local food. Also we have students visitors come in to learn about their history in a fun and interesting way.' She said this month she has local students from various schools lined up for visits during the whole month, but it is still open for tourist visitors. The museum sometimes arranges integrated learning programs for young people. 'Sometimes we arrange a program for students on study tours to historical sites and the young participants are also encouraged to plant a tree each. After the tour students are then encouraged to express their understanding and impression in the form of arts under the supervision of local professional artists.' The Thalang Museum hours are 9 am to 4.30 pm daily. Admission fee is 30 baht. It also provides guide tours for group visitors and students. (Thalang National Museum, Phuket Tel: 076 311426 )

Phuket restaurants set to be recognised by Michelin Guide
(2 Nov 2018) LEADIN:
Phuket's strategic location, on historical shipping routes linking Southeast Asia to China and Europe, has created a unique fusion cuisine on the southern Thai island.
In recognition of its contribution to the world of gastronomy, the prestigious Michelin Guide is set to include restaurants from the popular tourist destination in its forthcoming 2019 edition.
STORYLINE:
It's long been known for its sandy beaches and luxurious resorts, now Phuket is being recognised for something else - its food.
Located on historical shipping routes, linking China to India and Europe, Phuket's cuisine was heavily influenced by seafarers, mainly arriving from China, Malaysia, the Dutch East Indies and Europe.
Many of them brought new recipes from their homelands, which over time blended with and inspired Phuket's unique and varied contemporary cuisine.
Phuket's street food is famous for rich curries, noodles, fresh seafood and zesty salads.
Kopitiam By Wilai, set in an atmospheric old shophouse in Phuket City's old town, services what it describes as Phuket soul food.
Kopitiam is the old Phuket word for coffee shop, but the restaurant is best known for its mee sua - Chinese noodles sautéed with egg, prawns, chunks of sea bass and squid.
The owners are fourth generation Chinese, the restaurant is managed by the family's eldest daughter, Wiwan 'View' Bumrungwong.
I am from a Chinese family, but we live in Thailand, so we have Chinese food with Thai cooking style mixed in, she says.
And there is lots of Halal food, for example, beef Masaman curry. So, Phuket food is pretty mixed.
In a bowl of Masaman curry, there is Thai ingredients, which is Tamarind juice, India spice and it is often served with Moo Hong (pork stew), which is a Chinese dish.
As in other parts of Southeast Asia, family meals are considered to be the glue that holds society together. Family recipes are passed down through generations.
Geographically, we're in the middle of the trading area, which is…can be from the west, from the east. Actually, where the east meets the west, says Pattara Suwannakarn, managing director of the Peranakan Phuket Museum.
So, we have the best of everything, especially even Thai food, the Thai food is actually good themselves. So, the Chinese, the Thai, the Indians, the Westerns, all bringing the best of everything. And that's where…how Phuket the food came to.
Following the very first Michelin Guide dedicated to Thai capital Bangkok, the 2019 edition of the book is set to also include Phuket and Phang-nga, the Thai province just to the north of Phuket.
It's set to be released at the end of this year.
The announcement set the island's culinary scene alight, competition between restaurants and chefs is already quite fierce.
One restaurant tipped for possible Michelin recognition is PRU - meaning Plant, Raise, Understand, located in the luxurious Trisara resort.
The restaurant serves modern, creative, farm-to-table cuisine. Owners say 100 percent of ingredients are sourced on the island, either from the restaurant's own farm or from local suppliers.
29-year-old Dutchman, Jimmy Ophorst is the Chef de Cuisine at PRU.
What we hope to achieve as a restaurant with it, and what our goal is to just put Phuket on the culinary map, says Ophorst.
Sri Panwa is another dining destination on the island that's turning heads.
Phuket's largest luxury resort, it boasts no less than six gourmet restaurants.

Thalang Road festival in old Phuket Town
This parade is part of the Old Phuket Town festival. It brings color and excitement to the tourists and Phuket residents.
On the 21st of March, members of Thai Peranakan Association and Tourism Authority of Thailand or T.A.Ts Phuket Office, Phuket City Municipality and members of the Old Phuket Town Community joined hands and celebrated another Old Phuket Town festival on Thalang Road in Phuket city. This festivals theme was remembering the history of Chinese immigrants in Phuket. Phuket Governor Wichai Praisangop, Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupana, along with, Director of the Phuket office of the TAT, Sethapan Buddhani, joined the ribbon cutting to start the parade in Thalang Road and walked along the road greeting tourists and residents who live in Sino-Portuguese architecture style houses and shops in Thalang Road. The road was closed to vehicles from 4-9pm.
The purpose of this event was to attract tourists here and motivate Phuket residents to help conserve the old traditions of Phuket town. People lended their help in setting up their shops for tourists to stop by, for taking pictures, and to try out some of the famous products, such as sarongs from shops along side, or tasted delicious dishes of locally famous restaurants. An Indian dance show was performed for people & tourists to observe the beautiful tradition. There are also many other attractive shops on Thalang Road such as number 74, which is an art gallery and local spa or residence number 37, which is a guest house branded as the first guest house at Thalang road by the TAT.
Pranee Sakulpipatana, a local historian, was also an honored speaker from the Peranakan Association who helped in this event and dressed up very prettily in Baba Peranakan traditional dress. She explained about this event to Andaman News:
Interview Dr. Pranee.
According to history of Old Phuket Town, Thalang Road is the oldest road in Phuket city. Its a well established business area that is exotic, genuine and in the attractive Sino-Portuguese style. It is home to several ethnic groups such as Thai, Chinese, Muslim, Indian and western people. This road has been the historical centre in Phuket city for over 150 years. Thalang Road is a very charming and unique area with artistic buildings and beautiful mixed cultures of the different ethnic groups. Its one of the locations not to be missed if you are looking for the genuine asset of this island. This is Zenniesha, reporting for Andaman News.

Amazing Tastes of Thailand Fest comes to Phuket
Celebrity chefs Chumpol Jaengprai and Bunn Borriboon were the main attractions at the TAT's Amazing Tastes of Thailand Festival on the Old Town's Thalang Road. The chefs took center stage to create new dishes for Phuket using the island's famed lobsters.
The Amazing Tastes of Thailand Festival is part of the TAT's Discover Thainess campaign - and what better way to do that than through the Kingdom's world-renowned cuisine? The festival brought together cooks from around the country to create their region's top specialties.

The old town area of Phuket Town has a valued heritage of history and culture appreciated by many nationalities. Many efforts have recently been put in by groups including the Old Phuket Town Foundation to maintain the precious cultural assets. Last week it held the Phuket Yesteryears event and our reporter captured some of the atmosphere. Lets take a look:
Promoting the much valued old Phuket Town area, its tradition and culture is the core task for the Old Phuket Town Foundation which was established and supported by the office of Phuket City.
Located in the heart of the city, the Old Phuket Town area is today revitalized and well kept as the Foundation and the Office of Phuket City aim at promoting its historical and cultural tourists sites. They include tidiness, convenience and safety for visitors.
The Phuket Yesteryears event was one example which reflects the Foundations determination to present and recall the good old days, showing off the local culture including garments, food and traditional ceremonies. Thai participants dressed up in traditional ways with ladies wearing Yaya dresses. It also exhibited old photos:
The event was well attended by expats as the Foundations President Dr. Prasit Koysiripong wanted the evening to be a venue for local residents, Thais and expat communities, to meet and get to know ach other and be proud of local cultural assets that Phuket has to offer.
(voice Dr. Prasit Koysiripong, President, Old Phuket Town Foundation )
The pictures are being collected and will be displayed in a museum. The foundation also plans to develop more work like having an information centre for younger people and visitors, with local guides who can provide accurate information to tourists who come to appreciate the cultural heritage of Phuket City.

Rose's Favorites - Phuket's living history at the Baba Wedding Festival
Now in its seventh year, the Baba Wedding Festival allows couples to take part in a century old tradition that helps to keep alive the culture of the Perenaken community of Phuket.
Many of the wedding costumes come from the collection of Jaroonrat 'Pa Daeng' Tandavanitj at Baan Chinpracha - a beautiful example of Sino-Portuguese architecture from the turn of the century.
Pa Daeng is the custodian of this “living museum” and is a strong supporter of the Baba Wedding festival, helping to outfit both brides and grooms for the occasion from her huge stores of traditional Perenaken costumes.
The second day of the festival is when the public can get a glimpse of the meticulous workmanship put into those costumes, as brides and grooms come together at the Hongyok Mansion for the formalizing of their vows followed by a grand street parade through the old town, so the grooms can show just how lucky they have been in catching such beautiful brides.
Story of Phuket - China Inn
Number 20 on Thalang road,
in the old Phuket Town area in the heart of the city,
is prominent for its Sino-Portuguese style
& architectural design a combination
of Eastern & Western civilization.
The house is owned by a wealthy Chinese descendant from Penang.
This shop house originally functioned
as a centre to receive or send money
from and to China.
The obvious evidence is reflected
in the sign of the restaurant.
The China Inn Café & Restaurant
was in a bad condition as it was abandoned
before it was refurbished.
A few years back, its ancient architectural value
was recognized by a lady who had seen
this lovely shop house since her childhood.
Her family decided to rent & renovate the premise and keep its original design as much as possible.
She now runs the restaurant & antique shop
following her dream.
Its my desire. When I saw it, I loved it
and dreamed to have a house like this.
One day my daughter walked passed
this shop house & saw the rental sign.
She ran back to tell me to make a bid.
My desire began to come true.
Now refurbished but skill keeping to its
old charisma, both outside & inside,
China Inn Café & Restaurant is one of
the most visited & photographed places
in the city of Phuket.
The interior has attracted
& led us into the far back of the building.
Its gradually unveiled the charm of Phuket.
If you have a half day to spare,
visiting this special restaurant is not only pure leisure,
but it also means you can turn back in time
to appreciate the local culture & feel of the
unfamiliar old times.
Entering the far back of the shop house,
we find a small garden seductively hidden.
This was a kitchen part for old Chinese
Hokkien house.
When changed to be a restaurant,
this part became a little heaven,
just steps away from the hectic world outside.
We are fond of antiques & old houses
so we tried to revive its origin.
I didnt know that the inside was a wreck
as the outside appeared to look nice
like when I saw it during my childhood.
Opening the door, I was astonished & thought what Im going to do?
I have done some modifications & adjustments
to be practical and keep to the original notion
as much as I can.
The old material?
These 3 pillars, the roof & the tiles belong to the house, but they were removed & left here
so I went through them & used some
for roofing this part & the kitchen.
The house structure, like most of the crossbeams
are original,
but the floor & wooden plates are mostly new.
The stairs use old material as I had them repaired.
Decorating it in Chinese style,
it fits the house, restaurant & the road
as we are situated in an Old Town area.
Its not only the authority or local government,
but also the private sector
have participated in the preservation.
This leads to Thais and foreigners to visit
& appreciate the charisma of the city & its local identity.
It has won the Architectural Conservation Award
from the Association of Siam Architects
under HRH Princes Maha Chakri Sirindhorns patronage.
To repair an old house is different from
having a new one built. For a new house
you can just build it and use it.
Its a lot of work for old premises.
A decayed wall needs repairs every year.
In October we usually close for one month
to do maintenance work.
An individual fascination of an old house,
become one powerful force to preserve
such precious architecture on a historical road
like Thalang Road to boost pride in Phuket residents.

2 island 1 culture weddings in Phuket
Many positive and happy events took place across Thailand on Valentines Day. While the province of Trang in the Andaman Coastal region held underwater weddings, Phuket people were taken back in time for the Two island-One culture wedding which was very special. Our reporter went along to capture the memorable atmosphere.
An old Phuket style grooms procession using rickshaws started from the Phuket City office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand or TAT which represented the grooms residence. The procession went along roads in old Phuket town heading for the Hongsyok familys old colonial mansion, which represented the brides residence.
This procession took place after the grooms and families performed a ceremony to pay respect to god, seeking their auspicious day for the wedding and hope for a blessing that day and in the future, with Phuket Governor Preecha Ruangjan and his spouse Piyatida, leading the ceremony. The governor hoped that the event would promote a cultural value among the younger generation.
This was no ordinary wedding. It was the Two islands One culture wedding in which 8 couples from the island of Taiwan joined in the TATs invitation to get married in the traditional Thai Baba or Peranakan style in Phuket. They were joined by one local Thai couple, among many who are still fond of the traditional style of Baba wedding ceremonies, plus some 20 honeymooners as witnesses, and several young bridesmaids, girls and boys. The Director of the TATs local office in Phuket, Settaphan Buddhani, earlier explained more to us about the background of the special event:
Arriving at the brides residence, the grooms were greeted and welcomed in before a tea ceremony took place. During this ceremony red envelopes were presented to the couples. Settaphan explained that traditionally the envelop would have money in, but for this special occasion in an resort island of Phuket, the newly wed couples received many gifts for them to enjoy while staying in Phuket.
Also performing in the ceremony were Taiwanese stars, Ms. Queenie Tai and Mr. Alan Huang, who were also impressed with the ceremony.
Accompanying the group was a writer from the China Times Weekly in Taiwan, Danny Wen, who expressed his impressions about the wedding in Phuket:
In the evening a celebration party was arranged at the old Thai Hua Museum in a nice and relaxed atmosphere where the newly weds were blessed and wished a prosperous future by the Phuket Governor.
While the organizer was pleased with the turn out and enthusiasm about the wedding of participants and international press, local people were also happy to see the traditional ceremony.
Traditional dance displays by Taiwanese and Thai artists, including a young group from British International School Phuket, was also put on stage to end the nice happy Valentines weddings.
