Philopappos Hill hike, Greece (Travel vlog)
Join me as I hike up Philopappos hill. Also called the Hill of the Muses, a somewhat wild, pine-shaded spot that's good for a hike.
The hill also gives some of the best vantage points for photographing the Acropolis, and views to the Saronic Gulf.

A walk to Pnyx - Philopappos Hill, Athens Greece
In the center of Athens, near Acropolis are located the archaeological sites of Pnyx and Philopappos monument. Pnyx was the place where ancient Athenians met and discussed about city matters and any other subject that required discussion. Pnyx is the place where democracy was born and citizens had the right to express their opinions to other fellow citizens.
The history of the area starts from ancient Greek mythology as the place where Theseus defeated the Amazons. But the site is widely known for the Pnyx, the place where citizens of Athens gathered to discuss important city matters and this gathering was known as 'ecclesia tou dimou', the first democratic element in world history. From 6th B.C. until 4th B.C. many great Athenian citizens talked and expressed their views about matters that concerned the city itself as well as it's position in politics with other city-states. Also, in this area, one can see the remains of the ancient demos of Koile, an important trade route that connected ancient Athens with the port of Piraeus protected by the long walls of Athens that were constructed by Themistocles to protect Athens and it's trade port of Piraeus by any attacking army invading Attica.
Philopappos Monument was a ceremonial mausoleum dedicated to Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos, an honoured citizen of the city of Athens. Ancient Athenians in order to comemmorate his memory erected a tomb structure on Mouseion Hill, where after centuries was best known as Philopappos Hill.
Philopappos Monument, Philopappos Hill - Athens, Greece
The Philopappos Monument is located on Philopappos Hill, near the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. It was built some time between 114 and 116 C.E. as a monument and tomb of Caius Julius Antiochos Philopappos. It is also the site where Musaeus was supposedly buried.

37. Monument of Philopappos, Athens
The Monument of Philopappos is a tower tomb on the Mouseion Hill in Athens and its façade can be seen from the Acropolis. Julia Balbilla commissioned the tomb between A.D. 114 and 116 in honor of her brother, Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos. Philopappos was the son of the King of Commagene who was deposed in the 1st century A.D. by the Flavian emperors. Philopappos moved to Athens, served as a suffect consul in Rome, and was buried in Athens. The scene on the tomb's façade depicts Philopappos on the day of his consular procession in Rome, a scene based on the triumph of Titus on the Arch of Titus in Rome.
OktoXL fun at Philopappou hill, Athens, Greece
Just a flight for fun. Also, the first time I tested my new gyro settings which seem to have sorted most of the problems I had out :)
A note about the place: Nobody knows exactly why this metal construction was built and what its purpose is meant to be, I'm glad these kids found a use for it. It is now one of the oddest skate parks in Athens :p

The theatre of Dionysus and Philopappos hill (Αθήνα/Athens)
The Theatre of Dionysus was a major open-air theatre in Athens, built at the foot of the Acropolis and forming part of the temenos of Dionysus Eleuthereus (Dioe Liberator). Dedicated to the god of wine and fertility, it hosted the City Dionysia festival. Amongst those to have competed are all of the renowned dramatists of the classical era, such as Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes. A stone-version of the theatre, which was built c. 325 BCE, seated between 14,000 to 17,000 spectators.[1] After this the theatre fell into disuse and little is recorded until 61 CE where there is evidence of major renovations done by the emperor Nero. The remains of a restored and redesigned Roman version can still be seen at the site today.
The Theatre of Dionysus also eventually hosted meetings of the Athenian Ecclesia after the Pynx was deemed unsuitable.
Greek authorities announced on November 24, 2009 that they will partially restore the ruined marble theater. The Culture Ministry said the $9 million program is set for completion by 2015 and will include extensive modern additions to the surviving marble seats.
Philopappos monument is a two-storey structure, supported by a base. On the lower level there is a frieze representing Philopappos as a consul, riding on a chariot and led by lictors. The upper level shows statues of three men: of Antiochus IV on the left, of Philopappos in the centre and of Seleucus I Nicator, now lost, on the right.
In the niche below Philopappos is an inscription that says: Φιλόπαππος Επιφάνους Βησαιευς, (Philopappos, son of Epiphanes of the deme of the Besa). This was the name Philopappos carried as an Athenian citizen. In the niche left of Philopappos, an inscription in Latin, records Philopappos titles, honors and his career as a Roman magistrate: Caius Iulius Antiochus Philopappos, son of Caius, of the Fabian tribe, consul and Arval brother, admitted to the praetorian rank by the emperor Caesar Nerva Trajan Optumus Augustus Germanicus Dacicus. On the right niche of Philopappos once read a Greek inscription (now the base is only preserved): Βασιλεύς Αντίοχος Φιλόπαππος Βασιλέως Επιφανούς Αντιόχου (King Antiochus Philopappos, son of King Epiphanes, son of Antiochus).
Below the statue of Antiochus IV, Philopappos' paternal grandfather, is an inscription that states King Antiochus son of King Antiochus. This inscription honors Antiochus IV and his late father, the last independent ruler of the Kingdom of Commagene, King Antiochus III Epiphanes. When Antiochus III died in 17, Commagene was annexed by the Roman Emperor Tiberius and became apart of the Roman Empire. Below the statue of Seleucus I, the founder of the Seleucid Empire from whom the Commagene kings claimed descent, stood another inscription, now lost. The traveller Cyriacus of Ancona wrote in his memoir that underneath th inscription stated King Seleucus Nicator, son of Antiochus.
The monument measures 9.80 m × 9.30 m, and contains Philopappos burial chamber. The structure is built of white Pentelic marble on a socle 3.08 m high, made of poros marble and veneered with slabs of Hymettian marble. The north side of Philopappos monument bears lavish architectural decorations.

Hidden Secrets Of Athens, Greece! - Evidence Of Lost Ancient Civilization In Plain Sight?
Josh Sigurdson reports on the ground on the ancient ruins of Filopappou Hill (Philopappos Hill) and the Hill Of The Pnyx in Athens, Greece, just a 10 minute walk away from the Parthenon and the Acropolis.
As we've reported on so many times on this channel, we have not been given the full story on the history of ancient civilizations and there is a constant flow of new information proving an advanced, ancient civilization lived long before us, passing down knowledge of their abilities like an ancient, historical game of telephone, slowly being forgotten as time went by.
From Gobekli Tepe to the Sphinx, there are thousands of examples of megalithic structures that existed in a far off epoch, long before Dynastic Egypt or Ancient Greece. Structures that the ancient Egyptians and ancient Greeks could not have built, or lifted. Technology that is far beyond their abilities as well as in many cases beyond our current abilities.
The cyclopean wall on the hill of the Pnyx in Athens, Greece is a great example of massive stones being moved into place like puzzle pieces for no meaningful purpose. The wall stands apart from most ancient Greek walls and most people shrug it off. It is truly an amazing fete of architecture and sits in a place of great importance in Greece that seems to show evidence of Greeks building around it in an ancient epoch.
The stones are similar to the polygonal stones we see in Peru and Bolivia as well as parts of Egypt and elsewhere.
Alongside the megalithic structures next door on Philopappos Hill and the astrologically aligned Parthenon close by as well as the countless legends of Zeus pertaining to the specific hill also known as the Hill Of The Muses and the legend of giants, this site is an important one to analyze with the idea of an ancient cataclysm, ancient civilizations and lost technology in mind.
It's also important to analyze the countless new megalithic discoveries around Greece predating the classical period by thousands of years that have come to people's attention in recent years like Dhaskalio and the Pyramid of Hellinikon near Argos. Not to mention Atlantis....
Stay tuned as we continue to explore these ancient sites and bring you information the textbooks won't even bother referring to as it contradicts popular stubborn knowledge.
