Philpott Lake
Nestled among the rolling foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge, Philpott Lake is a scenic wonderland. The lake covers 3,000 acres with 100 miles of shoreland.
Visitors to the lake are always amazed at the natural beauty of the area. Most areas are under forest cover. There are numerous recreational opportunities, including: boating, swimming, picnicking, hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation.
The lake has eight campgrounds, six beach areas, and nine boat launches. Visitors to Philpott should begin with a trip to the Visitor Center for maps and info on lake safety and programs.
The lake was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1948 and 1951, with it opening in 1953. Philpott Lake is convenient to Greensboro, NC (60 miles), Roanoke, VA (50 miles), Winston-Salem, NC (60 miles), and Raleigh, NC (130 miles), and Richmond, VA (190 miles).
Hiking Dogwood Glen Trail to Spring Cove at Philpott Lake in Franklin County, Virginia
A hike along a portion of the Dogwood Glen Trail from the Philpott Dam area trailhead up and along the ridge and then down to the Spring Cove Spur Trail. Great views of the lake from the peninsula at Spring Cove near Deer Island. On the way back did some bushwacking down the ridge by the dam to shorten the hiking distance. It was a beautiful mid-Feb 2014 day in Franklin County, Virginia. Thanks for watching!!!
FLW Outdoors: Philpott Lake
Philpott Lake and the surrounding areas will receive a dose of international publicity this coming Sunday, December 16th at 1 p.m. when the reservoir is featured on the NBC Sports Network's FLW Outdoors. The one-hour long television program can be seen on Comcast Digital Channel 226 and DISH Network Channel 159.
In September, Martinsville-Henry County EDC's Tourism and Film Division co-hosted the National Guard FLW College Fishing Northern Conference Championships on Philpott Lake, along with Franklin County Commerce & Leisure Services, Patrick County Tourism and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers- Philpott Lake.
40 college fishermen from nine states and 14 high school fishermen from seven states participated in the three-day tournament which also featured a daily Fan Expo for the public at the Martinsville Wal-Mart. Data gathered from event surveys indicate that the event had an economic impact of $49,566 in direct expenditures and FLW estimates the value of print and digital media coverage to be valued at approximately $441,000.
Weigh-ins were live-streamed over the internet during the 30-minute FLW Live webcast each day during the tournament. The hour-long NBC Sports program will show footage from the web-cast filmed in Martinsville and will also show new footage from on the lake that was not seen by spectators during the tournament.
We are honored to have our beautiful lake and community featured on this international television program said Jennifer Doss, Director of Tourism for Martinsville-Henry County. High profile, media coverage like this can really help put Philpott Lake and our tri-county region on the map as a recreational destination of choice. We hope that viewers who enjoy outdoor recreation will plan to come visit and see the scenic beauty of Philpott Lake first hand after viewing it on television.
Craig Rocky Rockwell, the Operations Project Manager for Philpott Lake, stated that Having this tournament come to Philpott Lake was incredible and it highlights the partnerships and local investments in our operations at Philpott Lake. FLW could not have brought this tournament to Philpott Lake without the Twin Ridge Fishing Tournament Facility, which was built and put into operation just this last spring as a result of a local partnership effort, for which Franklin County invested $50,000. Rockwell added With just the immediate economic impact of this tournament, the tri-county area around the lake saw nearly a 1,000% return on the local investment. That's absolutely incredible and will only be multiplied by the exposure of being televised internationally.
In addition to covering the tournament, NBC Sports also sent a crew to specifically film other attractions in the Martinsville area. The highlighted points of interest that were filmed included: fly fishing on the Smith River, Martinsville Speedway, Smith River Sports Complex, Virginia Museum of Natural History, The Big Chair, Studio 107, Uptown Martinsville, and the Circus Mural. According to Doss, Our staff was informed by the producers that these scenes would be used as brief glimpses of life in Martinsville-Henry County as the main focus of the program is fishing on Philpott Lake. We realize that not all the scenes filmed will make it in the final cut of the show but are excited to watch and see which attractions are shown.
Martinsville-Henry County EDC's Tourism & Film Division is one of only two film offices in Virginia certified by the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI). For additional information on film related projects in Martinsville-Henry County see

About us
We fell in love with each other at an RV show and as a result we fell in love with campers too. For years we have been going to RV shows and picking out our favorites and dreaming of the day we would be able to have one of our own. Then in the summer of 2017 after a series of major mishaps (Our car being totaled, pay cuts and layoffs and a trip to the ER) we purchased our first camper, a Jayco Qwest for less than 5000. Then we began the process of downsizing. Now we are living in our camper full time traveling and exploring the RV Lifestyle.

Canoeing Philpott Lake with Willy's Adventures
THANK YOU to my friend, Willy Bailey, for inviting me to join him on this canoe trip to some great spots on Philpott Lake. This lake is an impoundment of the Smith River and is located in Patrick County, Franklin County, and Henry County, near the small town of Basset, in the rugged foothills of southern Virginia.
We put in at the Goose Point Recreation Area, and paddle along the lake shore a bit before crossing the main channel to reach Turkey Island. We also circle around Deer Island and see some cool beaches. Finally, we return to Turkey Island to explore some really nice cliffs with excellent views of the surrounding area.
Thanks for watching!

Philpott Dam and Smith River
In 1944 Congress authorized the construction of Philpott Dam for flood control of the Smith River. Completed in early 1950s, the dam also provides some hydroelectricity generation. The dam, lake, and surrounding public lands offer numerous outdoor recreational opportunities. Smell N Roses made a short visit to the dam and Smith River on February 11, 2014. Stay tuned for additional adventures from this beautiful and rugged area. Thanks for watching!

A Virginia Jewel: The Smith River
Fisheries biologists conduct a fish sampling survey on the scenic Smith River using electrofishing equipment that momentarily stuns the fish. The fish are quickly weighed, measured and released back to the water. The Philpott Dam, constructed in the 1950s, changed many characteristics of the river. The large trophy brown trout that once thrived in the cool tail waters below the dam are fewer today, and biologists like Scott Smith are working to best manage this river both for its native species and as a recreational trout fishing destination. This sampling effort is part of a multi-year study monitoring the numbers, sizes, and growth rates of fish in the river as they relate to environmental conditions and operation of the dam.
