TOUR of NORTHERN ICELAND! (AKUREYRI, GODAFOSS, MYVATAN, and DETTIFOSS) ????????2018 vlog
Welcome to Northern Iceland! In this vlog, we embark on a day trip adventure with Air Iceland Connect to see the otherworldly volcanic landscapes and waterfalls in Iceland's northern region.
This tour is for nature lovers and is best to explore during summer. We fly from Reykjavik to Akureyri, a 45-minute flight. We take a full day 10 hour guided tour that includes transportation. Our first stop is the stunning waterfall of Goðafoss.
We travel to Lake Myvatn´s unique nature and pseudo-craters, followed by the Dimmuborgir lava labyrinth. One of the top sights is bubbling Hverarond (aka Hverir), a geothermal area noted for its bubbling pools of mud & steaming fumaroles emitting sulfuric gas. The desolate landscape looks like mars.
Next, we reach one of the main highlights - Dettifoss which is Europe´s most powerful waterfall featured in the movie Prometheus. Next, we visit the volcanic wonderlands of Vatnajokull National Park, Jokulsargljufur canyon, Hljodaklettar (Echo cliffs), Asbyrgi a horse-shoe-shaped cliff formation. We finish our tour in the quaint Husavik fishing town. Lastly, we head to Akureyri to fly back to Reykjavik!

Exploring the sites around Lake Mývatn in North Iceland!
The sites around Lake Mývatn in Northern Iceland are unique from the rest of the country. Other than being around millions of flies, during our self-guided one day road trip tour, we explored Grjótagjá Thermal Spring, Hverfjall Crater, Dimmuborgir Volcanic Caves and Rock Formations, Hofdi Lava Pillars, Skútustadagígar Pseudocraters and ended our day soaking in the Mývatn Nature Baths (the Blue Lagoon of the North).
Find our photos, how-to's and recommendations by clicking the link below:
Where is Lake Myvatn located?
Lake Myvatn is located in Northern Iceland. It is 97 km/60 mi east of Iceland’s “Capital of the North”, Akureyri, and 475 km/295 mi northeast of Iceland’s capital Reykjavik.
What sites are located around Lake Myvatn?
Grjótagjá Thermal Spring
Hverfjall Crater
Dimmuborgir Volcanic Rock Formations
Hofdi Lava Pillars
Skútustadagígar Pseudocraters
Mývatn Nature Baths aka “The Blue Lagoon of the North”
How long does it take to tour the sites around Lake Myvatn?
This is dependent on how much you will explore each site. We recommend the following minimum/maximum times for each site:
Grjótagjá – 30 min/1.5 hours
Hverfjall – 1 hour/2 hours
Dimmuborgir – 45 min/2.5 hours
Hofdi – – 20 min/1 hour
Skútustadagígar – 15 min/1 hour
Nature Baths – 30 min/3 hours
How should you tour Myvatn Lake?
Each of these places are easily accessible via car. They all have parking lots and most have informational signs at the start of the site (see below). At Grjótagjá, you will need to climb down some rocks to see the thermal springs but the water is too hot to bathe. You must be able to climb a hill to view the top. At Hverfjall, you will need to hike up a dirt incline. Dimmuborgir and Hofdi have easy dirt walking paths. Skútustadagígar also has easy walking paths but you may have to walk up tiny hills to see the inside of the psuedocraters. It is really easy to enter the Myvatn Nature Baths but can be slippery in some areas.
When should you visit Lake Myvatn?
This area boasts some of Iceland’s best weather during the summer months and is one of the coldest areas during the winter. In winter time, the roads are subject to closure so keep that in mind.
How much does it cost to tour around Lake Myvatn?
Other than Myvatn Nature Baths, all the sites are free and have free parking. Click here to get the current price of “The Blue Lagoon of the North”.
What should you bring when touring Lake Myvatn and its surrounding sites?
Walking Shoes
A hat with a net covering your face to protect from ALL THE FLIES.
Rain Gear
Swimwear (darker color to avoid discoloration from the thermal pools)
Towel
Bag to put wet clothes
Change of clothes
Water
Snacks
Sunscreen and Sun Protection
Camera
Hiking Pole, if needed
2T2T TIPS
Highly recommend a fly net to cover your face if you plan on visiting the sites close to the lake. See the black spots in that picture? Those are flies! Visit the Mývatn Nature Baths at the end of your day to recover from touring all the sites. Hverfjall, Dimmuborgir and Skútustadagígar have absolutely no shaded areas so wear proper sun protection. Similar to everywhere else in Iceland, wear layers!
What else can you see nearby?
Check out Namafjall Hverir Geothermal area (16 km/10 miles)
Walk the rim of the Krafla Viti Crater (24 km/15 miles)
Visit the powerful Godafoss Waterfall (45 km / 28 mi)
Hike through lava fields to the famous waterfalls Dettifoss and Selfoss (74 km/46 miles)
Explore Iceland’s “North Capital” city of Akureyri (97 km/60 miles)

Botanical Garden in Akureyri Iceland
The Botanical Garden in Akureyri is a popular destination for foreign tourists who are interested in flora. Every summer thousands of guests visit the garden. Now this September the autumn colors are appearing and the flowers are preparing for the winter, along with the bumblebees.
The Public Park was first opened in 1912 and the botanic section added in 1957. The park has been enlarged three times since 1912 and is now about 3.6 ha and lies at 40-50 m altitude by Eyrarlandsvegur road close to the town center.
The aim of the Botanical Garden is to grow trees, shrubs and perennials in the demanding climate of Northern Iceland. The shelter of Eyjafjordur, one of the longest fjords in Iceland, provides a favorable microclimate for plant growth. It makes it possible to grow the surprising number of 6600 number of species, including 430 native species. The garden is an IPEN member and is active in seed-exchange, public information, education and recreation.

The Real Ring Road Tour Of Iceland Part III (landscape photography)
Iceland and the landscape photography from the Iceland ring road whale watching and the hot holes of Hverir. east to north North Iceland is home to the unexpectedly lush Jokulsargljufur area, the northern section of Vatnajokull National Park including Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall
On Skjalfandi Bay, Husavik has established itself as Europe’s main whale watching mecca with the superb harbor-side Whale Museum and sightings of rare species like the blue whale. The Skagafjordur district, with its green valleys and ancient mountain ranges, is the traditional heart of horse breeding in Iceland and boasts many historical sites from the classic Sagas.
One of the most known places in north Iceland is Lake Myvatn and its surrounding areas, with attractions like Dimmuborgir, Godafoss (‘The waterfall of the gods’), Asbyrgi canyon and the magnificent sea cliff Hvitserkur, to name a few.
The Midnight Sun is an extraordinary spectacle in these northern latitudes and during Northern Lights season, the magnificent vistas are made even more theatrical by the glow of Aurora Borealis.
Seasonal delights include golf under the Midnight Sun at the world’s northernmost 18-hole course in Akureyri, taking to the slopes at one of eight skiing areas, snowmobiling, horse trekking, super-jeep excursions, white-water rafting and hiking on along the rugged coastline.
In June 2017, the first beer spa in Iceland was opened in the village of Dalvik, where people can cleanse their skin by lying in a tub filled with beer, water, hops and yeast.
And of course, Akureyri, ‘the capital of the north‘, has everything to offer for the more social-minded people, including shopping, a variety of cafés and restaurants, cultural events and art exhibitions, etc.
For more detailed information about attractions, villages and activities in north Iceland be sure to go through our destination guide.
Flatey Island Photo Tour - 2018
The small island of Flatey is located in Breiðafjörður, North Western Iceland. It is home to numerous species of arctic birds who spend their summer breeding on the island making it a great location for a photographic tour.

Kirkjufell, or 'Church Mountain', is a distinctly shaped peak found on the north shore of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, only a short distance away from the town of Grundarfjörður. It is often called ‘the most photographed mountain in Iceland’, due to its dramatic formation and perfect coastal location.
