We started in Arusha, Tanzania Africa - Catching a small plane to the northern Serengeti where I was amazed at the huge number of animals we saw in the first few hours of the tour. The Thomson Camp or Nyumba in the Northern Serengeti is a bit of paradise - The tents are filled with comfy beds, a bar tent is nearby and the food is ridiculously good for being in the middle of nowhere. On Day two we saw the wildebeest crossing the mara river and it was amazing - the dust, the herd, the splashing, the drama as some didn't make it - to witness with my own eyes what I saw growing up on PBS and Nature documentaries was just beyond words.

TANZANIAN SAFARI - PHOTO RETROSPECITVE
Hi this is Barbara from Travels With Lobo and Barbara
My trip to Tanzania Africa last January checked of two points on my bucket list.
- no. 1 -an African safari
- no. 2 - climb Mt. Kilimanjaro
Since this is the last blog of the Safari portion of the trip let me address a few questions about the Safari part.
Is January a good time to go on a safari in East Africa?
It is considered a “good” time but not the best.
The best wildlife viewing months in Tanzania are during the dry season from late June to October. The best chance of seeing the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti is during June and July
==========================
There are hundreds of companies offering safaris and treks of Mt. Kilimanjaro – which one to pick?
In most cases, a recommendation is a good thing, and in my case the recommendation came from my nephew James who previously had fulfilled part of his bucket list with Bryson Heroes Tours based in Moshi located at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. In retrospect I would highly recommend this company as well.
======================
What does it cost?
The 5-Day Camping Safari portion cost $1400 US per person for:
English speaking guide driver/guide
four wheel Toyota Land Cruiser with pop up roof for game viewing
cook for three meals a day
unlimited drinking water
camping facilities except for sleeping bags
park fees
one night hotel accommodations in Moshi after safari but not meals
----------------------------------
also did not include tips (generally 15% collected at end of safari)
alcoholic drinks
Where will you go?
All safaris in this part of Africa start and end in the town of Moshi at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro
=================
Did I take maleria pills? Yes, with no ill effects
===========
So let move on to no. 2 on the bucket list - Mt. Kilimanjaro

Living next to the road. Arusha region, Tanzania, December 2017
'Living next to the road' series.
Project admitted at the Street Photography Awards 2018
I took these photographs in Tanzania, next to the roads of the Arusha region, in December 2017.
Along the route, I could see many people walking along the road and the sides of the road were full of activity when crossing the villages or their vicinity.
Many stores that sell phone credit, drinks and snacks emerge. There are stalls selling fish, fruits, roots, vegetables, spices, pots, pans, brooms or car parts. People gather, play, go to the car and motorcycle workshops or to the beauty salon, buy in stores, wait for the bus ...
Some young people sit with their bikes talking and smoking while people pass by. Other people come to look for a telephone credit, to buy, or simply they are at the door of their house spending their time and protecting themselves from the sun under a tree or an umbrella.
The contrast between the traditional and the modern is remarkable, the rural is mixed with the urban and the primitive with technology.
