Aiming for free trade throughout the western hemisphere by 2005, Secretary of State Warren Christopher pledged today to build further political and economic bridges with Latin America.
On the third leg of his five-nation Latin American tour, Christopher stressed the need for wider hemispheric cooperation.
Christopher is in Argentina today following a stop in Chile where he gained guarded support for U.N. sanctions against Cuba for shooting down two American planes.
Secretary of State Warren Christopher strolled through the Plaza de Armas Wednesday with his US entourage and Chilean hosts.
Santiago authorities showed the Secretary the sights, while one of the Chileans offered Christopher a photo book of the city, Chile's capital.
A small group of demonstrators gathered to show their solidarity with Cuba.
The Cuban situation has colored Christopher's tour since its start Sunday in El Salvador.
The protesters chanted Out of Chile, out of Argentina - Christopher out of America Latina, and displayed Cuban flags and signs denouncing the U.S.

They Chilean government rushed to condemn what occurred following the incursion in Cuban territorial waters of two pirate planes. Since the UN Security Council has not condemned the action, but has called it unfortunate, today the government of Chile has appeared more anti-Castro than the US itself.

Secretary of State Warren Christopher won guarded Chilean support for U.N. sanctions against Cuba for shooting down two American planes.
But Chile warned it would oppose unilateral U.S. action against the Caribbean nation.
Speaking at a news conference with Christopher, Chilean Foreign Minister Jose Miguel Insulza said his government is prepared to discuss further sanctions in the United Nations Security Council.
Earlier in the tour, Christopher met with government officials in El Salvador and Chile. He leaves for Brazil on Friday, and from there to Trinidad and Tobago.
The last time a U.S. Secretary of State visited Latin America was in 1988. President Ronald Reagan's Secretary of State, George Schultz, was booed at the Ecuadorian Congress and the target of a terrorist attempt in Bolivia.

As the world grows in population there are just fewer and fewer places where one can really experience one-on-one with nature. Patagonia is one of those places.
We have been married for thirty years and we took our honeymoon to Chile. As part of our story, Chile is in our most beloved photo albums and videos.
From the mere name, Patagonia evokes travel, it evokes wonder and mystery.
Feeling the wind at night that moves your tents gives you the sense that you are quite small in this vastness. Seeing this place and understanding this vastness, it absorbs me, it consumes me.
That's what we feel.

STORYLINE:
Chilean President Sebastian Pinera arrived in Vietnam on Thursday for a two day official visit.
Pinera was greeted by Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang with an official welcoming ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi.
After inspecting a guard of honour, the two presidents held an hour of talks on various topics including economic cooperation.
Vietnam and Chile established diplomatic relations in 1971.
The two countries signed a Free Trade Agreement last year, which is expected to boost bilateral trade.
Trading revenue reached 500 (m) million US dollars in 2011.
Later on Thursday Pinera is scheduled to hold talks with Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
