Phuket Walking Street is a great place for spending a Sunday evening, with lots of locally made products and souvenirs, as well as clothing, and mountains of Thai street food and market food! There are hundreds of choices available including many popular Thai dishes, local cuisine and heaps of other Thai food. It’s a great Phuket Night Market and is definitely worth a look if you’re in Phuket Thailand on a Sunday.

Thai food markets are one of the best places to buy fresh and authentic Thai food, or to buy groceries and fruit while you travel in Thailand. There are so many Thai dishes on offer and the foods here are cheap, and so tasty! And in case you’re worried, eating street food is perfectly safe. It’s what the locals eat and it is cooked fresh and sold quickly. I’ve been eating it for over 5 years in Thailand and my friends who have been to visit and tour Thailand have all eaten it, and none of us have had any problems. Thai street food is some of the best Thai food you’ll find in Thailand!
The markets in Thailand are a great place to try traditional Thai street foods, learn Thai recipes and cooking, as well as eat some of the best Thai dishes in Thailand. You'll see the people cooking the food right in front of you. And best of all, the food is cheap, often much cheaper than eating in a Thai restaurant.

Kanean culture village, Phuket
Phuket does not only have tourist attractions on the beach. But it also has a cultural centre located in Ka-Nhaen community, Thalang district. The center has information about local culture, history and Thai customary ways of life and also is a democratic community, where people are able to give out their opinions and help each other out as a whole.
Today is another exciting day for Dang who prepared and brought in raw materials to help cook with the community members and received guests who traveled far from other provinces and were attracted by the centers reputation and paid a visit as a group.
Ka-Nhaen community is located near Ton Sai stream and waterfall, in Thalang district, Thepkasatri sub-district in Phuket Province. The Ka-Nhaen village itself existed since the Ayuthaya era and is a place where the Thai heroines, Thao-Thepkasatri & Thao Srisuntorn, resided and fought with the Burmese.
It is a community with a democratic structure where people are helping each other out and is also a very unique and a traditionally conserved environment and community.
The adults in the community see to it that the best and effective way to conserve the old tradition of Thai customary ways of life, is to help encourage children in the village and then they can take part in the next generation.
Home grown vegetables are planted by every household in Ka-Nhaen Village. People in the village do not feel obliged but know that by using home grown vegetables to cook for food, herbal teas and making traditional sweets, they are entitled to a better and healthier lifestyle.
The villagers are taught to share goods and exchange products that were produced by hand and to keep a peaceful pace of living a sustainable lifestyle.
The Cultural & Activity center presents itself as the main gathering area for villagers, visitors and tourists from everywhere. The Cultural & Activity center would not have made it until today if people in the village didnt help build the Ka-Nhaen temple in the year 1994 and finished the construction around year 2001. They gave the temple back to the local monks but the villagers also wanted a new place where people can continue to live in an old Thai way of life; therefore, the Cultural and Activities center was built in 1996. Trai Banyath, Local Scholar of the Community, told us more:
Once the temple was finished, we gave it back to the monks and community, and since we could no longer use the temple as our gathering place, we decided to build the Cultural & Activities center and finished its construction around 1996. People gather here constantly and bring in food and supplies from the local forests and home grown vegetables.
The center acts as a gathering place with old Thai style huts and activities stations. It is also a tourist attraction because the center shows their unique Thai style dancing called Classical Thai Tune or Rum-Manorah. Knowledge of old traditional skills such as plaiting banana leaves into a variety of animals, traditional cooking which uses raw materials and no artificial products, and also supporting agriculture goods and produce. They also have their local dishes which contain exotic and unique flavors. Trai Banyath continued:
Residents here are living in a democratic community. We are entitled to be responsible for everything that is relevant with the community. Whoever is specialized in any kind of skills are required to teach other people and work as a team. This method brings people together and unites them as one big community, creating compassion, love and trustworthiness among the people from the same village.
The Community Local Scholar also told us with a grateful gratitude that the center was established under HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn idea to conserve Phuket residents traditional Thai way of life. Therefore, the center was built and operates as learning, cultural, activities and community center, where all the people from both inside and outside of the village can visit, participate in activities and join in to study the history and cultural significance of Thai people in Phuket Province.

Where To Eat Phuket Town - Rendezvous Restaurant.
Casual dining and coffee shop by day and bar with fine dining and an abundant choice of wine by night; Rendez-Vous wears many hats, and unlike me, wears them well. Our first little tester was the Fried “Laab Rendez-Vous”, which is a play on the traditional Thai dish Laab Moo (ground pork with Isan spices). Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside and full of spice and lemongrass with just the right amount of heat, Khun Ae is very proud of this dish and it is easy to see why it has become a crowd favorite.

The old town area of Phuket Town has a valued heritage of history and culture appreciated by many nationalities. Many efforts have recently been put in by groups including the Old Phuket Town Foundation to maintain the precious cultural assets. Last week it held the Phuket Yesteryears event and our reporter captured some of the atmosphere. Lets take a look:
Promoting the much valued old Phuket Town area, its tradition and culture is the core task for the Old Phuket Town Foundation which was established and supported by the office of Phuket City.
Located in the heart of the city, the Old Phuket Town area is today revitalized and well kept as the Foundation and the Office of Phuket City aim at promoting its historical and cultural tourists sites. They include tidiness, convenience and safety for visitors.
The Phuket Yesteryears event was one example which reflects the Foundations determination to present and recall the good old days, showing off the local culture including garments, food and traditional ceremonies. Thai participants dressed up in traditional ways with ladies wearing Yaya dresses. It also exhibited old photos:
The event was well attended by expats as the Foundations President Dr. Prasit Koysiripong wanted the evening to be a venue for local residents, Thais and expat communities, to meet and get to know ach other and be proud of local cultural assets that Phuket has to offer.
(voice Dr. Prasit Koysiripong, President, Old Phuket Town Foundation )
The pictures are being collected and will be displayed in a museum. The foundation also plans to develop more work like having an information centre for younger people and visitors, with local guides who can provide accurate information to tourists who come to appreciate the cultural heritage of Phuket City.

Rose's Favorites - Old Phuket Town's Sunday market on Thalang Rd
At the center of Phuket's historical Old Town, the Thalang Road Sunday market runs from 4pm until late, with a wonderful variety of stalls, attractions and performances that make it a different experience every week.
The market oozes an atmosphere of easy-going fun encompassed within the historical beauty of century-old row houses, epitomizing the Sino-Portuguese vernacular embraced by the wealthy Chinese families of yore.
Rose meets Dr Kosol Tang-Uthai, Deputy Mayor of Phuket City, to discuss the future of the market and plans to improve the historical center of the Island.

USS Boxer sailors paint Muang Phuket School
US Navy ship USS Boxer Community Services (COMSERV).
While in Phuket, sailors from the Boxer carrier group had the opportunity to experience the culture and hospitality of Thailand as well as to assist local communities and take part in friendship-building activities. From August 23 to 24, sailors participated in a community service project, painting the fences and walls at Muang Phuket School, in Chalong.
I filmed them on Tuesday morning and (then at end) talked to Jack, coordinating the local help for Navy League Phuket organisation, Jake - the Chaplain and Ron - the project leader both from USS Boxer, plus two of their other sailors painting away, and also in Thai with khun Montree, a teacher at the school and khun Jaed, translator for Navy League Phuket. It's good to see the US Navy helping our community and enjoying their stay here.

Traditional rice planting in Phuket
Special Report for Andaman News NBT (VHF dial) + FM90.5 Radio Thailand at 8.30am & perhaps relays/repeats on local Cable TV channel 1, broadcast to Phang Nga, Krabi & Phuket provinces, & possibly FM108 Mazz Radio 7.30pm in Phuket, Wednesday 3 September 2008 & Send comments to AndamanNews@yahoo.com
Intro: It's almost ten years since traditional rice farming seemed to disappear from Phuket. Just on Monday a pilot plot was introduced as a learning centre for the younger generation. Our Thai reporter who is a local, but does not have a clue of how to farm rice, was assigned by the editor to cover the activity. So she said she may as well join in to get a first hand experience. Let's see how she did:
Tape: Being notified of a conventional rice farming activity which involved local villagers, officials and children, our Thai editor assigned our reporter Chantima Somkhan to cover the news as usual. The activity was organized by the provincial Agriculture and Cooperatives Office aiming at educating young people about rice farming so that they can appreciate the rice farmers who had been the nation's so-called 'back bone' until industrial and other developments over grew them.
She said 'I'm in the rice paddy within the community learning centre and I will learn along about the conventional rice farming which faded away from Phuket almost 10 years ago.'
The Mai Khao village located in Thalang district, north of Phuket, is one area where we can still see some buffalo and rice fields. A 20 rai rice paddy belonging to local villagers were designated as a community learning centre for interested farmers. When the harvest comes, the benefit will be shared.
She said: 'This is mud and these are saplings. They must go together as the mud is full of nutritious value to feed the saplings and the ultimate outcome is rice to feed us.'
The saplings must be 25 days old before they can be pulled out and replanted in a prepared paddy field. Our cameraman had to teach Jantima how to do it properly.
After putting the sapling in, then farmers have to wait around 120 days until the harvest.
The Phuket vice governor Smith Palawatwichai hopes that it was a worthwhile experience for the local kids and that the plot can be a learning source for many others.
Not only Chantima got a first-hand experience that day, local students also valued the experiences saying that it was a good outdoor learning activity.
This student said : ' After we learn to do it here, then we are assigned to share with our friends back in class. I find it fun actually.'
Conventional Rice farming is hard, but with the price hikes, many are interested to learn or revive rice farming. Let's hope that Thai rice farmers still have some rice paddy left for them to carry on with this traditional career.
