WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT PHUKET?
December to April. These months are the driest. Not surprisingly, they also make up the biggest chunk of the island’s high season. January to February is the coolest period, perfect for sightseeing, but it’s also the most crowded.
Patong is Phuket’s flagship beach. It is what Kuta Beach is to Bali,
and White Beach to Boracay. It is the most popular, most developed, and not surprisingly, most crowded beach in the island. Aside from swimming, sun bathing,
and just walking along the shore, you can enjoy other activities like:
Jet ski: ฿15000 per 30 minutes
Water ski: ฿1200 per 15 minutes
Wakeboard: ฿1200 per 15 minutes
Parasailing: ฿1200 per person
Banana Boat: ฿600 per person
A vibrant nightlife also takes over the island, especially Patong Beach.
Clubs and bars flank its streets. A visit can leave you culture shocked,
if you know what I mean.
PHI PHI ISLANDS AND MAYA BAY
The Phi Phi Islands are some of the most famous beach destinations in Thailand.
The archipelago is actually within the territory of nearby Krabi Province,
but it can be conveniently reached from Phuket. Karst cliffs rise from clear,
turquoise waters, as though ushering visitors in. If you’ve been to El Nido,
it’s very much like it. The largest island in the group is Ko Phi Phi Don,
while the second largest is Ko Phi Phi Le.

Bang Tao Beach in Phuket, Thailand
Bang Thao, also known as Bang Tao and Laguna Beach, is a beach on northwestern side of Phuket.
Bang Thao is a large open bay with one of Phuket's longest beaches. It was once used for tin mining, but has since been developed into a luxury resort. Most of it is occupied by the Laguna complex, a massive five-hotel development with golf course. There are, however, accommodations available outside Laguna at the bay's south end.
Dry season swimming is excellent, and at the bay's north end is a smaller bay, almost completely enclosed, at the mouth of which is some fine coral. Plenty of places to eat, tour companies, and other tourist facilities are available either at Laguna or in the nearby town of Cheong Thale.
Bang Thao is about 25 minutes from Phuket airport and transfers can be arranged for about 600 Baht. A metered taxi may cost about 50 Baht less. Metered taxis can be much cheaper, but better if somewhat knowledgeable of the area.
Bang Tao is six kilometres long, with diverse environments
Bang Tao Beach is many things for many people. Being over six kilometres long, many things happen within in its length. At the southern-most end one finds the remnants of a small fishing village currently being transformed by tourism. An anchorage for this community's traditional longtail boats lies in a protected hook of sand here. Their boats now catch more tourist passengers than fish. There are some wooden boat repair facilities here, a fancy housing estate and a couple of small beach hotels.
.
Virtually all of Bang Tao's resorts are found immediately north of this community, in the southern two-kilometres of the beach – as the beach map shows clearly. The central and northern stretches of Bang Tao are completely undeveloped, with just a few small restaurants scattered among the trees. So much unoccupied beach on Phuket's prime west coast seems rather incongruous, especially here in this upmarket part of the island with many elite housing estates.
.
The far northern end of Bang Tao is also called Layan Beach. The kilometres of empty sand here are only now seeing the beginnings of tourism development, with the opening of a modern Beach Club in 2014. Hotels have been trying to build in this area for years, but disputes over land titles have shut them out – much to the delight of those in the holiday housing estates who would love to see at least one stretch of Phuket beach left in a natural state. See the video of this quiet beach at the end of the photos here, or additional info and photos at Layan Beach, tranquil and undeveloped.
.
There are more true beachfront resorts here on Bang Tao Beach than on any other beach in Phuket. The central and southern sectors of this beach hold 10 in total, mostly up-market, with a few mid and lower range.
While Bang Tao hosts thousands of visitors, its length is able to absorb and spread them out, resulting in a beach that is never anywhere near as crowded as Patong, Kata and Kamala. Also, the huge, flat expanses behind this beach are still sparsely developed, with fewer urban hotels sending bodies to the beach than at the famous beaches further south.
Sand: the sand on Bang Tao Beach is much like that along all of Phuket's west coast; fine, white and soft underfoot. It's great for kids to play in. The beach is a little narrow, however, and at high tides much of it disappears underwater, leaving only a thin strip of sand high up.
.
Water: the water is typical of Phuket's west coast; clear, warm and generally very calm through the high season months, making it quite safe for families with young children. The far south end with a fishing community, boat anchorage and nearby houses is the only spot we see discoloured water being discharged into the ocean and signs of pollution.
.
Shade: the beach is lucky to have a thick line of casuarina trees at the top of the sand providing deep shade. Many resorts also provide umbrellas, so the options for shade to escape the heat of the day are generally good.
.
Density of use: the south end of the beach where all of the beachfront resorts are lined up gets quite busy in the high season. The photos here show the beach in early January 2014, the very peak of the high season. The north end of the beach has almost no accommodation, only a few restaurants and is generally very quiet, with long stretches of empty beach.
.
Children, family-friendly resorts: Bangtao Beach is one of the most child- and family-friendly beaches on Phuket – perhaps the best. Many resorts have built facilities for families, and one even has special pricing and packages for children. See BangTao; family-friendly beach & resorts for more details.

Phuket City on Phuket Island is the capital of Thailand’s Phuket Province. The Thai Hua Museum has exhibits on Phuket’s culture and history. Phuket city a lot to see and do and spend money in this old town full of heritage buildings. Phuket Town features an exciting mix of old and new, simple and sophisticated, peaceful and pulsating. The activity in Phuket Town is nearly around the clock. In the early morning, stoic monks take to the streets on their daily alms rounds and the fresh market buzzes with restaurant owners buying ingredients for the day's meals. Non-stop bustle characterises the daytime, and lasts well into the evening. Nights are reserved for enjoying good company, whether at a restaurant, a disco, a quiet bar, or a combination of all three.

What comes into the mind of travellers when we talk about sea, sun and sand? Phuket must definitely be one of the answers. A number of exciting activities can be found on this island. In the early days of regional maritime trade, the cape of Phuket was locally referred to as Jung Ceylon, while locals called it Thalang, which evolved to be the name of the main town to the north of the island. As the perfect stopover sheltering traders from monsoons, Jung Ceylon welcomed merchants from India, Persia, Arabia, Burma, China, and also Siam. During the 16th century, the island was a popular trading port for tin. In 1785, Thalang town was surrounded by Burmese troops who invaded the coastal area. It was under the leadership of Chan, the widow of the governor, and her sister, Muk, who united the local residents and successfully fought and drove the invaders out of Phuket. It took over 30 days for the defending troops of Phuket, under the command of Chan and Muk, to claim their victory. As a result of such heroic deeds, noble titles were granted to Chan and Muk as Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Soonthorn, respectively. They are still highly respected by Phuket residents even today. When the city was in a peaceful state, the development of mining was so unprecedented. Chinese businessmen and miners later migrated to Phuket and soon enjoy thriving wealth. The island's long history has shaped the Phuket of the present with its diverse ethnic groups, culture, architectural influence, and fine cuisine. These attributes have made Phuket a complete tourist destination that offers a lot more beyond its natural heritage of sea, sand, forest, and world-renowned diving sites. Sino-Portuguese architecture casts its spell delighting travellers to the city, while Phuket style of hospitality has never failed to impress visitors from all walks of life.
Getting to Know: 1. Phuket is located approximately 862 kilometres south of Bangkok. 2. Phuket (play /puːˈkɛt/; Thai: ภูเก็ต [pʰūː.kèt]), formerly known as Thalang (Tha-Laang) and, in Western sources, Junk Ceylon (a corruption of the Malay Tanjung Salang, i.e. Cape Salang), is one of the southern provinces (changwat) of Thailand. Neighbouring provinces are (from north clockwise) Phang Nga and Krabi, but as Phuket is an island it has no land boundaries.
Phuket, which is approximately the size of Singapore, is Thailand's largest island. The island is connected to mainland Thailand by two bridges. It is situated off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Phuket formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber, and enjoyed a rich and colorful history. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign ship logs of Portuguese, French, Dutch and English traders. The region now derives much of its income from tourism.
One of the most popular tourist areas on Phuket is Patong Beach on the central western coast, perhaps owing to the easy access to its wide and long beach. Most of Phuket's nightlife and its cheap shopping is located in Patong, and the area has become increasingly developed. Patong means the forest filled with banana leaves in Thai. Other popular beaches are located south of Patong. In a counterclockwise direction these include Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach, and around the southern tip of the island, Nai Harn Beach and Rawai. To the north of Patong are Kamala Beach, Surin Beach and Bang Tao Beach. These areas are generally much less developed than Patong, and sought out by individuals, families and other groups with a preference for more relaxed and less crowded environs than Patong. There are many islands to the southeast, including Bon Island, just a short boat trip away. There are several coral islands to the south of Phuket, the Similan Islands lie to the north west, and Phi Phi Islands to the south east. Islanders engage in a lively tourist trade, catering to snorkellers and scuba divers.

Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand, located in the Andaman Sea of southern Thailand. The island is mostly mountainous with a mountain range in the west of the island from the north to the south. The mountains of Phuket form the southern end of the Phuket mountain range, which ranges for 440 kilometres (270 mi) from the Kra Isthmus. Although some recent geographical works refer to the sections of the Tenasserim Hills in the isthmus as the Phuket Range, these names are not found, however, in classical geographic sources. In addition, the name Phuket is relatively recent having previously been named Jung Ceylon and Thalang. The highest elevation of the island is usually regarded as Khao Mai Thao Sip Song (Twelve Canes), at 529 metres (1,736 ft) above sea level. However it has been reported by barometric pressure readings that there is an even higher elevation (with no apparent name), of 542 meters above sea level, in the Kamala hills behind Kathu waterfall. Its population was 249,446 in 2000, rising to 525,018 in the 2010 decennial census, the highest growth rate of all provinces nationwide at 7.4% annual, some 600,000 people reside in Phuket currently,[12] among them migrants, international expats, Thais registered in other provinces and locals. The registered population, however, includes only Thais, and the end of 2012 was 360,905 people.[13]
It is estimated that Phuket has a total area of approximately 576 square kilometres (222 sq mi) (including the province's other islands). Phuket is approximately 536 miles (863 km) south of Bangkok, and covers an area of 543 square kilometres (210 sq mi) excluding small islets. Other Islands are : Ko Lone 4.77 square kilometres (1.84 sq mi), Ko Maprao 3.7 square kilometres (1.4 sq mi), Ko Naka Yai 2.08 square kilometres (0.80 sq mi), Ko Racha Noi3.06 square kilometres (1.18 sq mi), Ko Racha Yai 4.5 square kilometres (1.7 sq mi), and the second biggest, Ko Sire 8.8 square kilometres (3.4 sq mi) (It is also the 2nd most popolated in Mu Ko Phuket.
It is estimated that if all its 39 other small islands are included, Phuket Province will cover an area of 576 square kilometres (222 sq mi). The island total length, from north to south, is estimated at 30 miles (48 km) and 13 miles (21 km) wide.[14]
Phuket's topography is exceptional with 70 percent of its area covered with mountains which stretch from north to south and the remaining 30 percent being plains located in the central and eastern parts of the island. It has a total of 9 brooks and creeks but does not have any major rivers.
Forest, rubber and palm oil plantations cover 60% of the island.[citation needed] The western coast has several sandy beaches, while on the east coast beaches are more often muddy. Near the southernmost point is Laem Promthep (Brahma's Cape), which is a popular sunset viewing point. In the mountainous north of the island is the Khao Phra Thaeo Non-hunting Area, protecting more than 20 km² of rainforest. The three highest peaks of this reserve are the Khao Prathiu (384 metres (1,260 ft)), Khao Bang Pae 388 metres (1,273 ft) and Khao Phara 422 metres (1,385 ft). The Sirinat National Park on the northwestern coast was established in 1981 and protects an area of 90 square kilometres (35 sq mi) (68 kilometres (42 mi) marine area), including the Nai Yang beach where sea turtles lay their eggs.
One of the most popular (and overcrowded) tourist areas on Phuket is Patong Beach on the central western coast, perhaps owing to the easy access to its wide and long beach. Most of Phuket's nightlife and its cheap shopping is located in Patong, and the area has become increasingly developed. Patong means the forest filled with banana leaves in Thai. Siam Safari in Phuket Thailand
iTravel Channel went to one of Thailand’s top ecotourism and conservation attractions, Siam Safari in Phuket.
If you’re traveling to the Land of Smiles, Siam Safari is an attraction you definitely do not want to miss. Started in 1989, the company is one of Thailand’s longest-running ecotourism projects and one of the pioneers of environmentalism and conservation in the southern provinces.
Located in Phuket, Siam Safari started over 20 years ago as a conservation project for elephants that were left displaced after Thailand made their use for the logging industry illegal. Soon after, they began providing elephant trekking as a means for these elephants to continue with a purpose and daily routine of work. For elephants that had been working their whole lives, they needed such an activity to carry on – in fact, elephants have been working in Thailand for centuries.
Today, Siam Safari is an important destination for tourists to learn about why elephants are so special to Thai culture and also the importance of saving them from human dangers like illegal poaching for their tusks. The company offers a “four-in-one” half day safari where tourists can learn about traditional Thai activities like making coconut milk and oil, rice-farming and the tapping of rubber trees.
Most importantly, Siam Safari is an opportunity for people to get up close and personal with Thai elephants. Not only can they take a ride through the jungle on these beautiful creatures, they also get to feed them and interact with their young.
There are many elephant camps on the island of Phuket, but the sad reality is not all of them treat their elephants with kindness and respect. That is why supporting Siam Safari, and its many projects including elephant conservation and in Phuket, is so important. It’s the only elephant camp in southern Thailand certified by the Royal Thai Government.

Ao Makham Muslims besiege Phuket hotel over anonymous complaint
Angry villagers from Baan Ao Makham blockaded the entrance to Phuket Panwa Beachfront Resort today in protest over a complaint they believe the resort made about the level of noise created during the call to prayer at the nearby Issatul Islam Ao Makham Mosque.
The anonymous complaint was filed with the Prime Minister’s Office, via the 1111 Complaint Center. It was then passed back down to Phuket through the Governor’s Office to the Phuket Cultural Office, whose officers presented it to locals.
Though the complaint was anonymous, Baan Ao Makham leader, Narong Koombann, explained that the villagers were sure that the Phuket Panwa Beachfront Resort was behind it.
