Places to see in ( Genoa - Italy )
Genoa (Genova) is a port city and capital of the Liguria region in northwest Italy. It's known for its central role in maritime trade over many centuries. In the old town stands the Romanesque Cathedral of San Lorenzo, with its black-and-white-striped facade and frescoed interior. Narrow lanes open onto monumental squares like Piazza de Ferrari, site of an iconic bronze fountain and the Teatro Carlo Felice opera house.
Genoa (Genova) is a historical port city in northern Italy, the capital of the Region of Liguria. Genoa today, as a tourist attraction, is often shadowed by cities such as Rome or Venice, even though it has a long history as a rich and powerful trade centre. However, with its multitude of hidden gems behind cozy alleyways, excellent cuisine (notably fish and seafood), renovated old port, beautiful sights (including one of Europe's biggest aquariums), and its position as the European Capital of Culture in 2004 have made the birthplace of explorer Christopher Columbus an enticing place which is gradually becoming more included in the touristic market. With pastel-coloured terracotta-roofed houses, artistic churches, lovely seaside villas, and also several luxurious boutiques, Genoa is a must see if you want to experience the quintessential Italy.
Genoa is known to have Europe’s biggest historical center. This is the heart of the old city. It’s made up of an incredible amount of tiny streets and alleys called Caruggi. Walking through it will plump you right back in ancient times when Genoa was the most important harbor of the Mediterranean sea. The city is generally safe, but caution is to be applied, especially at night time and in the more quiet zones toward Piazza Principe and the old harbor, due to presence of small criminality.
The natal house of Cristoforo Colombo. In piazza Dante you will find what is said to be the natal house of Columbus;
The impressive fortification belt built on the hills surrounding the city, originating in the 16th Century
There is a funicular railway servicing Monte Righi, where one can have pleasant walks on the surrounding hills and to the fortifications (see above), or just admire the spectacular view of the city and the Mediterranean Sea.
Spianata Castelletto is a nice belvedere where one can have a pleasant view of the city and of the seaport. It can be reached by public lift from Piazza della Nunziata or on foot from that very same square.
Via Garibaldi (also known as Via Aurea and Strada Nuova, Golden Street and New Street) with very impressive baroque buildings. Some similar buildings are also found in Via Balbi.
The Old Harbour (Porto Antico), next to the Aquarium, is an entertainment area with museums, cinemas, cafés and also a beautiful promenade along the sea.
The Lanterna - the oldest European lighthouse and a prominent Genovese symbol
A lot of beautiful churches, some of which date back to the Romanesque time (San Giovanni di Pre', San Donato, Santa Maria del Castello)
Corso Italia - Genoa's promenade
Boccadasse - a picturesque fishermen quarter
Castello d'Albertis
Palazzo Ducale Where the Dukes of Genoa used to live.

Genova.

Do in Genoa, Italy
=============
There are plenty of things to do in Genoa. A lot of young kids spend their time playing with their friends in public pools and share ice-creams in the summer time. There are a lot of paintings in the town and on the brick floors which a lot of people admire. Fishing for catfish is also a hobby most people have.

The Basilica of San Siro, one of the oldest Catholic churches of Genoa, is a church located in the street, in the neighborhood of La Maddalena. Built according to tradition in the fourth century, it was originally dedicated to the Twelve Apostles; There was buried the holy bishop Siro and became the first cathedral of Genoa. His parish is part of the vicariate Central-West of the Archdiocese of Genoa. The current main façade of the basilica, long remained unfinished, was built between 1819 and 1821. In the neoclassical style, was designed by Carlo Barabino, Genoese architect whose name is associated with many public buildings in the early decades of the nineteenth century and the plan urban expansion of the city. On either side of the entrance, stucco statues of the Faith, of Nicolò Traverso, and Hope, Bartolomeo Carrea. Below the gable are bas-reliefs depicting various episodes from the life of San Siro, inspired by traditional hagiography of the saint. The interior, divided into three naves by two rows of arches supported by twin columns, is full of works of art. The decoration, in Baroque style, is for the most part by the family of Ticino Carlone: in particular Taddeo, author of several sculptures and John the Baptist who was responsible for the frescoes of the nave, the dome and the choir, performed in collaboration the quadraturist Bolognese Paolo Brozzi. At first you have the plaster statues of the apostles in the niches of the aisles, according to the frescoes depicting the miracle of the basilisk, in the vault of the choir and the Glory of S. Siro in the presbytery (1652). The other frescoes by Carlone, all carried out between 1650 and 1670, depict Constantine adores the Cross and The Emperor Heraclius shows the true cross on Calvary, in the vault of the transept, episodes from the life of St. Peter (The Calling of St. Peter, Martyrdom of St. Peter, St. Peter precipitates Simon Magus), Taking of Christ in the Garden, the Beatitudes, theological virtues, cardinal virtues and the prophets and celestial Hierarchies. Other famous artists of the seventeenth century Genoese (Gregorio De Ferrari, Domenico Fiasella and Domenico Piola) created the frescoes in the vaults of the chapels and aisles. The main altar in black marble and bronze (1670) is the work of Pierre Puget, Marseille artist active in Genoa in the second half of the seventeenth century, which is also attributed to the Crucifix.
The prospectus of the counter, the work of Rocco Pellone (1641), is decorated with a large statue of St. Peter, a disciple of the work of Carlone. In the apse, the group of the Pietà by Giacomo Carlone (1533-1566), was inspired by Michelangelo's famous statue of St. Peter's Basilica. Along each of the aisles there are six chapels richly decorated and a fine set of works of art; two of these chapels (dedicated to Our Lady of Providence and St. Anthony) close to the bottom of the two aisles. The side chapels are entitled to the most important noble families who contributed to the decoration of the church and that it had the patronage. The church of San Siro today is not the bell that as already mentioned was demolished in 1904 for fear of a collapse, having revealed large cracks in the structure. 50 meters high, was similar to those of the nearby church of the Vines and the Commenda of Prè and had been raised in the eleventh century, at the time of the first reconstruction of the church. The decision to demolish the nearly millenary Romanesque bell tower was made on the emotional wave provoked by the collapse of the bell tower of San Marco in Venice, which took place July 14, 1902, but unlike this was not rebuilt. The bell tower remains only the lower part, to the height of the roof of the church, not visible because it overlooks a private courtyard. The pipe organ of the church was built in 1950 by the firm of organ Parodi and Marin reusing the cash and the phonic material of the previous instrument. A mechanical transmission, has two keyboards and pedals. The cloister of San Siro was commissioned by the Theatine Fathers in 1575, during the renovation of the church. Partly reduced in the eighteenth century to the opening of the new road (via Cairoli) is now semi-abandoned and not open to visitors. At the center, where once stood the well of the convent, is a circular structure, topped by a pagoda roof supported by a series of cast iron columns, built in 1907 for the use of public toilets, and remained in use until the thirties of twentieth century.

PIAZZA TOMMASEO - Quartiere Foce
