Places to see in ( Pizzo - Italy ) Piedigrotta Church
The Chiesetta di Piedigrotta is an underground cave full of carved stone statues. It was carved into the tufa rock by Neapolitan shipwreck survivors in the 17th century. Other sculptors added to it and it was eventually turned into a church. Later statues include the less-godly figures of Fidel Castro and John F Kennedy. It’s a bizarre, one-of-a-kind mixture of mysticism, mystery and kitsch, especially transporting when glowing in the setting sun. In Pizzo, a small town in Calabria facing the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia, the traditional story about the church of Piedigrotta seems to confirm the old adage, “man proposes, God disposes”.
According to legend, during a storm in 1665 a ship from Naples was about to crash against the rocky cliffs below Pizzo. The captain, like many Neapolitan people, was devout to Saint Mary of Piedigrotta, and put his life in her hands, praying in front of the picture he had on board. When he and his men arrived safe and sound on land, they placed the holy image inside a small chapel carved out of rock, right where they had miraculously reached the shore.
After some time, local fishermen moved it to a small bay believed to be a better shelter against the elements. But soon another storm washed it away, taking it back to the beach where grace had been received. The prodigy appeared to be a clear sign: that was the location God had chosen, regardless of men’s good intentions.
Two hundred years later, between the 19th and 20th century, two artists from Pizzo – Angelo Barone and his son Alfonso – dug new caves in that location and carved dozens of magnificent religious subjects in the tuff stone, making the church as unique and gorgeous as we see it today.

The Chiesetta di Piedigrotta is a small cave church at the beach of Pizzo Calabro, in Calabria.
The rock the city of Pizzo is built on, is rather soft tufo (tufa), a porous sort of limestone, which is easy to cut while still wet. Local stone-cutters were mining blocks of the rock along the cliff, creating huge caverns.
Inside the cave are numerous statues hewn out of the soft tufa. Most of them were made by a local family during the 19th and 20th century. Most are biblical figures, but there are also famous people of daily life. One relief even depicts John F. Kennedy.
When you visit the church, make sure to buy your tickets at the bar above the church. There is long winding path down to the cave at the foot of the cliff, and you will not be able to buy tickets at the church!

Chiesa di Piedigrotta (Piedigrotta Church).

Pizzo, also called Pizzo Calabro, is a seaport and comune in the province of Vibo Valentia, situated on a steep cliff overlooking the Gulf of Santa Eufemia. Fishing is one of the main activities, including that of tuna and coral.
As with many other places in Calabria, Pizzo claims ancient origins. The town may have been founded by colonists from an unknown site in ancient Magna Grecia, but there is currently no documentary or archeological evidence to support this. Consequently, the history of Pizzo begins in 1300 when the existence of a community of Basilian monks, a fort, and a fishing village is documented . The name Pizzo (translated either as bird's beak or projecting point) fits perfectly with the tuffa promontory that juts out into the sea near the mouth of the river Angitola.
For centuries tuna was trapped in the beaches around Pizzo, especially in the months of May and June. Despite fading in importance over time this activity continued until the 1970s in the Centofontane area, where nets were spread to corral tuna from offshore. Ruins of the activity remain. The activity is now banned. The Piedigrotta and Prangi areas include some sea caves, and the cave of the Saracen, although largely eroded today, was supposedly used by Saracen pirates to store booty and people captured during their raids along the coast of Calabria.
The former King of Naples Joachim Murat, who was the brother-in-law of Napoleon, was imprisoned for several days in the town's Aragonese castle and then sentenced to death. He was executed by firing squad on October 13, 1815, in the main hall of the castle and was possibly buried in the church of San Giorgio. Paradoxically, the castle is now called Castello Murat. Inside the castle is the Provincial Museum Murat. In 1783 the town was almost destroyed by an earthquake, and it suffered some damage from the same cause in 1905.
It has an old castle, built by the Aragonese in the 15th century, in which Joachim Murat, ex-king of Naples, was shot on October 13, 1815. Other sights include the Baroque church of St. George (1632) and the cave church of Piedigrotta (17th century)

PIZZO, also called Pizzo Calabro, is a seaport and comune in the province of Vibo Valentia (Calabria, southern Italy), situated on a steep cliff overlooking the Gulf of Santa Eufemia.
The region is famous for several culinary specialties - including Tartufo - a large scoop of ice cream with filling in chocolate shell. The town boasts many historic churches and typical Mediterranean buildings. It is worth seeing the castle where one of Napoleon's generals, Joachim Murat, king of Naples, was imprisoned and then executed. A special attraction is the Chiesetta di Piedigrotta - a church carved from a volcanic tuff by grateful sailors who miraculously survived the catastrophe at sea.

Region słynie z kilku kulinarnych specjałów - w tym Tartufo - dużej gałki lodów z nadzieniem w muszli czekoladowej. Miasto szczyci się wieloma zabytkowymi kościołami i typowymi śródziemnomorskimi budynkami. Warto zobaczyć zamek, gdzie jeden z generałów Napoleona, Joachim Murat, król Neapolu, został uwięziony, a następnie stracony. Szczególną atrakcją jest Chiesetta di Piedigrotta - kościół wyrzeźbiony z wulkanicznego tufu przez wdzięcznych żeglarzy, którzy cudem przeżyli katastrofę na morzu.
