Pierces Creek fire - a firefighter's perspective
Footage from the initial response to the bushfire at Pierces Creek, west of Canberra that began on 1 November 2018.
On Thursday afternoon the Rivers brigade, along with numerous ACT RFS, Fire and Rescue and Parks and Conservation fire fighters was responded to a fire in the Pierces Creek area. On the Thursday afternoon and late into the night I performed the role of staging area manager.
On the Friday I was crew leader on a tanker undertaking fire suppression activities in the Charlie and Alpha Sectors, along Paddy's River road and on fire trails to the north and west of the firefront.

Please note this video only represents a small segment of activity on the fireground.

1 November Morning Firefighters crews were called to the scene at Laurel Camp Road about 5.45pm at Paddy’s River near Stromlo.
The fire started from a burnt-out car and spread to a pine forest.
The size of the fire quickly grew from one hectare to four and by 10.30pm was 27 hectares.
“The location of the fire is approximately 8kms from the nearest suburb and is burning at a slow rate in an easterly direction.”
Firefighters can only build solid containment lines at locations further from the blaze, so the fire will grow rapidly that day
In the afternoon, firefighters started going door to door along the urban fringe from Kambah to Gordon in an “education activity” designed to remind residents what the alert levels meant and what they should be doing to prepare
More than 20 ACT fire crews are on site, along with a total of six water-bombing aircraft.
The fire is still out of control and whilst firefighters worked very hard overnight in that steep, inaccessible terrain … the size of the fire is growing
2 November 2018, A watch-and-act alert has been issued for the out-of-control blaze southwest of Canberra, which has spread to 268 hectares.
Commissioner Lane later told a lunchtime press conference that due to the extremely dry conditions, the firefighters were facing conditions similar to the 2003 firestorm when four people died and close to 500 homes were destroyed. He feared people had become complacent in the ensuing nearly 16 years since the firestorm, but now was the time to act.
“So this is a strong reminder to our community, to the ACT citizens – now’s the time to get ready,” he said.
