Pilsen, European Capital of Culture 2015: More Than Pilsner Beer
Plzeň, evropské hlavní město kultury 2015: Více než plzeňské pivo
Plzeň, or Pilsen, is the fourth biggest city of the Czech Republic, and 2015 it was a European Capital of Culture. Pilsen is worldwide known for its beer, the Pilsner beer, created by Josef Groll in 1842. But the city has much more to offer than a visit at the Pilsner Urquell Brewery.
(cf. )
On the huge main square, the náměstí Republiky, is the St Bartholomew's Cathedral (Katedrála svatého Bartoloměje), a Gothic style temple from the late 13th century with the tallest church tower (102.6 m) in the Chech Republic. There is access to the tower platform that offers an excellent view to the square and the city.
On the North side of the main square is the Renaissance town hall (Renesanční plzeňská radnice) with a lot of sgraffitos on its façade; on the South side is the marionette museum (Muzeum loutek), where a lot of puppets are shown on several floors, including the national hero Jan Žižka or Faust and Mephisto. There is also a puppet theatre in the city which has a long tradition of puppetry (Josef Skupa and Jiří Trnka were puppeteers here).
Another monument is the Moorish Revival style Great Synagogue (Velká synagoga), built in 1893, one of the few synagogues that remained intact after the destruction of all Jewish life during the Nazi occupation. Today it is mainly used as a concert hall and photographic exhibition hall.
Last but not least there is a brewery museum (Pivovarské muzeum) that shows a lot of ancient machines and tools for brewing. From there visitors also have an access to a part of the historic underground tunnel and cellar network below the old town, one of the longest systems of this kind in Central Europe.
Pilsen, Europäische Kulturhauptstadt 2015: Mehr als Pilsner
Pilsen, tschech.

The beautiful city of Prague like you've never seen it before – from underground! Prague Underground tours take you into the cellars and tunnels that stretch for hundreds of metres underneath the city streets, exploring medieval houses, old city walls, bizarre art galleries and historic tunnels.

Plzeň
Plzeň is Bohemia's second largest city and the Czech Republic's fourth. About halfway between Prague and Munich in West Bohemia, Plzeň was founded at the end of the 13th Century on the old trade route from Passau to Prague and retains its original Gothic street plan to the present day.
In the middle of the huge open central square stands the Gothic cathedral of St Bartholomew, boasting the tallest church spire in the Czech Republic (102 metres). Lining the edge of the square are some impressive three and four storey town houses including the sgraffito-covered renaissance town hall.
The grid of streets surrounding the square are home to historic attractions such as thebrewery museum, the entrance to the Plzeň underground and the Franciscan monastery complex. Just outside the line of the old town walls to the west are the Great synagogue and the fascinating Patton memorial and museum that tells the story of Plzeň and West Bohemia's liberation by American troops at the ends of WWII.
Plzeň is not an especially green city, but outside the historic centre there are five rivers. On a short visit the three names to remember are Radbuza, Mže and Berounka. The Radbuza flows from the Šumava mountains in the south through Plzeň to the north, with the historic old town on the left bank and the train station on the right (eastern) bank. The Mže flows from west to east and joins the Radbuza just north of the city centre. From there the combined waters are named Berounka and flow north past Beroun and Karlštejn castle to join the Vltava on the southern outskirts of Prague.
Near the junction of the Mže and Radbuza rivers lies the famous Pilsner Urquell brewery, which is the single attraction that draws most international travellers to Plzeň. The city's old German name is Pilsen and here in 1842 bottom fermented lager was brewed in a commercial quantity for the first time ever. This style of beer became so popular that most of the world's beer is now made this way and Plzeň is considered by many to be the birthplace of modern brewing.
