Beaver Nation: The Pine Theater
Ali and Oniko Mehrabi moved from Portland to Prineville to raise their son in a small-town environment, but when they learned the town’s movie theater had been closed for 27 years with little hope of ever reopening, they jumped at the chance to renovate the historic building and bring the movies back to Prineville. Since the Pine Theater reopened in 2007, the Mehrabis have become an integral part of the community — a community that helped raise a portion of the money needed to convert to digital projectors and keep the theater open.

Flash flood gushes through Mitchell, Oregon
On Friday, April 19, thunderclouds unleashed onto the highlands surrounding the tiny town of Mitchell, a gateway to the Painted Hills in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Eastern Oregon.
By 5 p.m., it was clear a flash flood was underway.
“The street became a river of mud and debris -- a few hundred yards of soil and rock and trees and all manner of things,” said Mayor Patrick Farrell. “It all ended up in the center of town.”
Farrell said as of Saturday morning, the road was covered in a muddy, rocky mess. A large pile of debris -- which he estimates to be 6 or 7 feet tall -- accumulated right next to the town’s grocery store, gas station and the Little Pine Cafe. The flood gushed down Nelson Avenue, then onto Main Street.
Debris from flash flooding also closed Highway 26, which the Oregon Department of Transportation was able to reopen around midnight, Farrell said.
No one was hurt but some homes were flooded in the town, population 120. The American Red Cross arrived to help, and six people spent the night in the Mitchell School gymnasium.
