Lille is the capital of the Hauts-de-France region in northern France, near the border with Belgium. A cultural hub and bustling university city today, it was once an important merchant center of French Flanders, and many Flemish influences remain. The historic center, Vieux Lille, is characterized by 17th-century brick town houses, cobbled pedestrian streets and the large central square, Grand Place.
Lille is France's fifth largest metropolitan area and fourth urban area. It is located to the country's north, on the Deûle River, near the border with Belgium. The whole metropolitan area of Lille, both on French and Belgian territory (Courtray, Tournai) was estimated in 2007 at around 1,885,000 inhabitants, ranking as one of the major metropolitan areas of Europe.
Lille has a very nice city centre, excellently suited for a city trip. Most of the sights can be combined in a walking tour. Alot to see such as :
La Vieille Bourse (1653). Right between two picturesque squares, Place du Général-de-Gaulle and Place du Théâtre, this former commercial exchange still plays a central part in the life of the city. You may find booksellers and flower markets in the inner court.
The main square, Place du Général-de-Gaulle, better known as the Grand'place, has many lovely historic houses, like the neo-Flemish headquarters of local newspaper La Voix du Nord, and a fountain with the statue of a goddess, la Grande Déesse (1843).
Place Rihour, surrounded by restaurants, houses the tourist information centre inside its main attraction, the Palais Rihour (1453).
The town hall is worth a look and can be combined nicely with a visit to the Porte de Paris (1692).
The Opera (1923) and the Chamber of Commerce (1921) are located close together and offer magnificent sights, especially when lit-up at night.
Take a stroll through the old quarter of the city, known as Vieux Lille, and enjoy the quiet, cobble-stone streets, the variety of stylish designer shops, gourmet restaurants, and the modern Cathédrale Notre Dame de la Treille. More notable streets like Rue de la Monnaie and Rue Esquermoise are definitely worth the trip.
A bit farther from the city centre is la Citadelle, an interesting example of defensive military architecture, built by Vauban, a famous French military architect, under the reign of Louis the Fourteenth. In the same area is a zoo (free of charge) and a lovely park.
Musée des Beaux-Arts, a famed museum covering European art from 15th - 20th century.
Museum of Natural History, a large collection of stuffed mammals, insects, fossils, etc.
Musée de l'Hospice Comtesse, a former hospital now presenting art.
Musée d'Art et d' Industrie de Roubaix : La Piscine, a 20th century art museum hosted in a beautiful Art déco (start of 20th century) former swimming pool.
LAM - Lille Art Modern Museum, modern art, outsider art, contemporary art.
The open market, Marché de Wazemmes

Places to see in ( Lille - France ) Vieux Lille
The Old Lille is an area located north of Lille . It is the richest area in previous constructions in the xix th century. It still retains many paved streets and some traces of the canals that crisscrossed the city in past centuries. Until the First World War , the name of Vieux-Lille was attributed to all the part of the city prior to the 1858 enlargement, that is to say the part bordered on the west by the boulevard de la Liberty and to the south by the boulevard Louis XIV. During the First World War, around the Rue de Bethune, the train station and Molinel the street are destroyed, the Palais Rihour ( xviii th - xix th centuries) was burned.
The destroyed areas are reconstructed according to the fashion of the thirties, Art Deco around the rue du Molinel, neo-regionalist rue Faidherbe and rue de Bethune. In the 1960s and 1970s, the destruction of the popular district of Saint-Sauveur , makes the Old Lille the last testimony of the architecture of the city before the industrial revolution .
The north of the city center remains the only old part of Lille totally preserved. In fact, it escapes modernization and, as a result, is increasingly neglected by the most privileged inhabitants. It is probably from this period that the name of Vieux-Lille has shifted to this single perimeter. District of immigrants and families until the 1980s , trailing a bad reputation, he escaped a project of fast track in its center. On the contrary, it has been restored under the successive mandates of Pierre Mauroyand today has become a commercially very dynamic neighborhood. There are many bars, restaurants, and various shops, including luxury. Since its rehabilitation, the price of real estate has continued to increase, renewing almost its entire population and resulting in a rapid gentrification of the neighborhood.
If Lille has its origins in Old Lille, in the vicinity of the Notre-Dame de la Treille cathedral , most of what is called Vieux-Lille today is not the oldest of the city. A whole section of Vieux-Lille was built much later than the historic core: the roads north of rue du Pont-Neuf and rue Négrier date from the extension of 1670 decided by Vauban after joining the France of Louis XIV . They are characterized by their linear layout and their regular plan.
The streets, more flexible, located at the junction of Old Lille and the city center and around the cathedral are, however, among the oldest in Lille: rue de la Clef, rue de la Grande-Chaussée , Rue des Chats-Bossus, Place aux Onions , Rue Basse , etc. Most of the streets reflect the pace had Lille in the course of the xviii th century, when the architectural style of type Lille prospered and declined along rows of identical houses in the proportions and rhythms and different in the details of the decorations.

The Place du Général-de-Gaulle is an urban public space of the municipality of Lille in the French department of the North . The square is a large square with a completely mineral aspect that can be found in many cities of the former Netherlands . This is the historic and main square of the city.
Considered to xxi th century as part of the forum mentioned in 1066 in the founding act of the collegiate church of Saint-Pierre , the place would originate in the will of the aldermen of the city to make a market in xiv th century. The Deûle is channeled, the soil is gradually raised by embankments, then paved to create a market square. In the xvii th century, the construction of the commodity exchange divides the square Grand Place and Little Square (now Theater Square ). After the liberation of Lille during the Second World War , it is renowned in homage toCharles de Gaulle . The place is locally called Grand'Place or, more rarely, place of the Goddess.
The Place du Général-de-Gaulle has retained its role of grand-place: it is always a place of celebration and exchanges, including commercial, and events of all types. It is always the heart of Lille's stock market . The book trade, with the Furet du Nord bookstore and the many bookstalls, is also important.
The square is bordered by various buildings; eight are classified or inscribed as historical monuments , including the Théâtre du Nord (former Grande Garde) and the Vieille Bourse (formerly the Bourse de Commerce ). In the center of the square stands the column of the Goddess . Erected in 1845, it represents the heroism of Lille during the siege of Lille in 1792 .
The Lillois' favourite meeting place offers an interesting view of the architecture from the 17th to the 20th century. Standing in the centre of the squares stands the Goddess commemorates Lille's resistance to the Austrian siege in 1792. In front of the Old Stock Exchange built from 1652 to 1653, is undoubtly the town's finest building. This building is made up fo 24 little houses around an arched courtyard. A second-hand book market as well as chess players can be seen inside. On this square is situated the Grand Garde. The building was used to house soldiers from the sentry guard. It is now the Théâtre du Nord.

The Vieille Bourse de Lille , named after the construction of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the 1910s , is undoubtedly the most prestigious monument of the city. Located between the Grand'Place and Theater Square, it is one of the witnesses of the intense economic activity that took place in Lille during the Grand Siècle . It was classified as a historical monument in 1921.
The building, quadrangular, is in fact an interlocking of 24 identical houses which enclose what is called the inner courtyard, place where booksellers , florists , chess players , loafers and tourists meet each other. This site is served by the Rihour metro station .
Built in the middle of the xvii th century when the city is Spanish, the building was restored in the xix th century and from 1989 to 1998 (Patronage Association), has retained its luster. To recall their intervention in the restoration of the Stock Exchange, the large regional companies insisted on erecting their coat of arms on the cartridges overhanging the upper windows of the monument.
Located between the n o 1 and n o 2, a plaque recalls that for many years the statue of Napoleon I er was erected in the center of the court until its movement in the 1970s at the Palace of Fine Arts Lille .
The plaque bears the following inscription: The year 1853 on September 24, His Majesty the Emperor Napoleon III visited the Lille Stock Exchange and deigned to approve the provisions made by the Chamber of Commerce for the erection of a statue in Napoleon I st . Signed Napoleon. His Majesty has delegated to represent the ceremony of the laying of the 1 st stone of the monument erected to the senator Dumas as a former minister of agriculture and commerce.
