Northern France: The Unexplored Frontier
Northern France is just a hop across the English Channel and gateway from Britain to the continent. But despite thousands of travellers who pass through the busy channel ports, Nord-Pas-de-Calais remains unspoiled by tourists and largely unexplored. The region originally belonged to the Countship of Flanders as did Belgium and retains much of its Flemish flavour -- evident in its beautiful architecture. We explore the vibrant cities of Lille and Boulogne, tour beautiful cathedrals, drift the canals, visit Montreuil where Victor Hugo wrote part of Les Miserables, and in Arras, pay homage to the thousands of soldiers who lost their lives to war. Northern France Road Trip (Le Touquet + Amiens + Montreuil-sur-mer) • Emma Rose Daniels
Last month we travelled to France on a road trip for a few days. We stayed in Le Touquet (my favourite place in Northern France) and visited Amiens, Abbeville and Montreuil-sur-mer. We didn't need to travel far from Calais for a quintessentially French holiday!
I feel quite lucky to live in the south east of England, which means travelling to France is quite easy and only an hour or so away! France is also a country I love to travel in, so I hope that comes through in my video.

Amiens & Rouen, Normandy, France
An easy day-trip by train north of Paris will bring you to the cathedral towns of Amiens and Rouen, the gem of Normandy. Amiens has an attractive pedestrian zone running through the modern downtown, and an interesting, if small, Old Town, but it is the cathedral we have come to see the largest gothic cathedral in France, the land that invented this enduring form. Not only large, but perfect in form with all the standard gothic design you could hope for.
From here we continue by train to nearby Rouen, which has the largest collection of half-timbered medieval buildings in France. Easy to explore on foot, start out from the train station and keep on going through one historic lane after another. Here too you will find a famous cathedral but in this case the town itself is the main attraction, its narrow streets lined with thriving shops and historic monument, including the place where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Photographed during the Christmas season when tykes are skating in the main square and colorful lights line the shop fronts, this is a special time and place to enjoy.
EXPLORING the HISTORIC CENTRE OF LILLE (FRANCE) what to see & visit
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the historic centre of the city of Lille which is the capital of the Hauts-de-France region in northern France, near the border with Belgium. A cultural hub and bustling university city today, it was once an important merchant center of French Flanders, and many Flemish influences remain. The historic center, Vieux Lille, is characterized by 17th-century brick town houses, cobbled pedestrian streets and the large central square, Grand Place.
