Places to see in ( Lille - France ) Beffroi de Lille
The belfry of the Lille Town Hall , inaugurated in 1932 , is the highest civil belfry in Europe. The project of its construction results from the destruction of the former City Hall during the First World War. It is attached to the Hotel de Ville and forms a massive architectural ensemble for the Town Hall, and slender and slender for its belfry ; the whole was designed by the architect Émile Dubuisson .
For reasons of land availability and political choice, the building was built in the old district Saint-Sauveur , slightly off center from the city center of the time. The belfry is red brick and concreteCarved stone way mixing Art Deco and neo-Flemish architecture; the red brick meets the green plane trees that surround the building. It rises to more than 100m high, thus affirming for the time the political and commercial power of the regional capital.
The belfry hosts a collection of contemporary works, complementing those decorating the various municipal halls. At a height of 104 m , the belfry of Lille is also the largest municipal building in France. This site, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is served by the Mairie de Lille metro station and its ascent is open to the public.
The belfry of the Hôtel-de-Ville was preceded by the belfry of the Halle alchemy of Lille demolished in 1601 and by the old belfry of the Town Hall of Lille at the Palais Rihour built in 1826 and demolished in 1856. The belfry of the Chamber of Commerce which still exists is a few years earlier.
The belfry was designed surmounted by a rotating beacon ( 1,000 watts today) whose range is noticeable at nearly 30 km distance per night. Symbol of the influence of the capital, and perhaps also of its vigilance in the context of the 1930s when we are already preparing for a new war. The lighthouse illuminates the skies of Belgium , and can be seen as far as the North Sea .
The belfry adorns many postcards and municipal and regional documents. The belfry of Lille can also in the local or national journalistic language mean the municipality, in the electoral sense of the term. It adorns, with other monuments, a coin of the Monnaie de Paris with the effigy of Lille ( 34 mm in diameter, fluted slice, 16 grams ).

Cahors, France: St. Etienne Ancient Cathedral
The double-domed Cathedral of Saint Etienne was begun in the Twelfth Century and dominates the ancient section of Cahors and its square. There's nothing like stumbling into one of Europe's ancient cathedrals on a Sunday during services to make my neck hair stand up; spine tingling and inspiring.
Even though by now I was so done with tympanums and churches, it was a morning to remember.
