Dunkirk and French Flanders
A short visit over the English Channel to the town of Dunkirk in the French Flanders region of France. We went with Norfolk Line from Dover to Dunkirk direct, a journey which takes just two hours. We also visited Bergues, Gravelines, and Hondschoote. Dunkirk has a great war museum too.

The belfry of Dunkirk is a French monument of xv th century historic monument since 1840. The belfry is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site by the Belfries of Belgium and France since 2005. It was built around 1440 in place of an old watchtower.
The 58-meter high tower is built of brick in the Gothic style . It is originally attached to the church of St. Eloi and serves as a steeple . In 1558, the French led by the Marshal of Thermes invade the city and burn the church. Only the tower remains. The rebuilding of the church began around 1560 under the direction of the masterpiece Jean de Renneville but, for lack of means, the work was interrupted in 1585. The old tower, separated from the new church by a part of the ruins from the first church, remains isolated and serves as both a belfry, a municipal belfry, and bitter. The original project will never be finished.
In 1782 , the belfry is definitely separated from the church by a street. In 1835 , his coronation was modified. After the First World War , April 15, 1923 , the base was modified so that it received a cenotaph in memory of the dead of the Great War, directed by Pierre Fritel .
The Belfry still serves as a bell tower and currently houses a carillon of 48 bells dating from 1962 : the drone Jean Bart weighs 5 tons . This chime is still used today and can be visited. The carillon is reached by a narrow spiral staircase, which leads to the top of the belfry, offering a panoramic view of the city of Dunkirk .

Places to see in ( Lille - France ) Beffroi de Lille
The belfry of the Lille Town Hall , inaugurated in 1932 , is the highest civil belfry in Europe. The project of its construction results from the destruction of the former City Hall during the First World War. It is attached to the Hotel de Ville and forms a massive architectural ensemble for the Town Hall, and slender and slender for its belfry ; the whole was designed by the architect Émile Dubuisson .
For reasons of land availability and political choice, the building was built in the old district Saint-Sauveur , slightly off center from the city center of the time. The belfry is red brick and concreteCarved stone way mixing Art Deco and neo-Flemish architecture; the red brick meets the green plane trees that surround the building. It rises to more than 100m high, thus affirming for the time the political and commercial power of the regional capital.
The belfry hosts a collection of contemporary works, complementing those decorating the various municipal halls. At a height of 104 m , the belfry of Lille is also the largest municipal building in France. This site, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is served by the Mairie de Lille metro station and its ascent is open to the public.
The belfry of the Hôtel-de-Ville was preceded by the belfry of the Halle alchemy of Lille demolished in 1601 and by the old belfry of the Town Hall of Lille at the Palais Rihour built in 1826 and demolished in 1856. The belfry of the Chamber of Commerce which still exists is a few years earlier.
The belfry was designed surmounted by a rotating beacon ( 1,000 watts today) whose range is noticeable at nearly 30 km distance per night. Symbol of the influence of the capital, and perhaps also of its vigilance in the context of the 1930s when we are already preparing for a new war. The lighthouse illuminates the skies of Belgium , and can be seen as far as the North Sea .
The belfry adorns many postcards and municipal and regional documents. The belfry of Lille can also in the local or national journalistic language mean the municipality, in the electoral sense of the term. It adorns, with other monuments, a coin of the Monnaie de Paris with the effigy of Lille ( 34 mm in diameter, fluted slice, 16 grams ).
