가장 먼저 찾은 곳은 보헤미아의 진주라는 체스키 크롬로프! 몰다우 강은 도시 전체를 휘감아 흐르고, 고색창연한 도시는 중세 시간 여행으로 나를 인도한다. 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정된 이 도시의 거리는 하루 종일 관광객들로 북적인다. 발걸음에 묻혀 스쳐지나가기 십상이지만 맨홀 하나도 단순하지 않다. 이 도시의 상징인 다섯 개의 꽃잎을 즈려밟고 여행은 시작된다. 광장이라고 하기에 너무나 소박한 스보르노스티 광장, 하지만 영화 아마데우스의 촬영지로 나름 유명한 곳이다. 광장의 상징이라는 ‘마리안 플라그 칼럼’은 아쉽게도 보수 공사 중이었는데, 16새기 초반 전 유럽을 휩쓴 페스트를 퇴치한 기념으로 세워졌다고 한다. 작은 도시지만 체코에서 프라하 다음으로 관광객들이 많이 찾는 덕에 거리의 화가도 한가할 새가 없어 보인다. 광장 한 편에선 꼬마 화가가 실력을 뽐낸다. 우리 돈으로 3000원 정도를 내고 벽돌에 내키는 대로 그림을 그리는데 무슨 의미일까? “이 벽돌로 보헤미아 지방에 어려운 사람들을 위한 집을 지을 계획입니다.” 3000원의 행복, 국적은 다르지만 공존을 위한 공감의 흔적들이 흐뭇하게 쌓여 가고 있었다.

이 작은 도시 어디에서 그 많은 온천수가 흘러나오는 걸까? 테르말 온천 지하로 들어가면 온천수가 흐르는 모습을 직접 볼 수 있다. 입구엔 지하에서 온천수를 끌어올리는 관이 설치되어 있고, 내부는 온천수의 열기로 후끈 달아올라 찜질방에라도 온 것 같다. 얼마나 오랜 시간을 흐른 걸까. 수백 년의 세월로 쌓인 종유석 위로 온천수가 흐른다. 처음 온천수를 발견한 것은 14세기, 카를 4세가 사냥 축제에서 사슴을 추격하던 중 발견하게 됐다고 한다. 오랜 시간 온천수가 흘렀던 수도관은 온천수에 포함된 30여 종의 광물이 쌓이고 쌓여 통로도 좁혀지고 색깔도 달라져 전시용으로 지하에 걸려 있다. 수도관엔 득이 될 것 없지만 온천수를 이용한 도자기는 이 고장 특산품이다. 폭포수처럼 쏟아지는 온천수를 내내 맞으면 물의 성분 때문에 도자기의 색깔이 점점 짙게 변한다. 바로 옆에는 그렇게 해서 만들어진 도자기들이 전시되어 있다. 붉은 빛이 진한 장미는 가장 오랜 시간 공들여 작업한 결과물이라고 한다. 밖으로 나가면 여름인데도 모락모락 김이 나는 온천수가 흐른다. 온천물의 평균 온도는 70도 정도. 은근한 열기에 땀이 송글송글 맺힌다. 위에서 내려다보니 테플라 강변은 온천수로 그림이라도 그려놓은 듯 알록달록 또 다른 장관을 연출한다. 테르말 온천 내부로 들어가면 또 다른 온천 체험을 할 수 있는데, 입구부터 예사롭지 않다. 온천의 12개 원천 중 하나인 ‘브즈리델리’로 무서운 기세로 무려 십 여 미터를 솟아오른다. 지하 2500미터 깊이에서 1분에 내뿜는 온천수 양만 2000리터! 폭포수처럼 쏟아지는 온천수의 위용에 감탄하면서 심호흡 한 번에 나도 온천의 기운을 받아 본다. 온천이라고 기웃거려 봐도 우리 식의 사우나는 찾아 볼 수 없다. 온천수가 콸콸 쏟아지는 식수대만 눈에 띌 뿐! 이곳의 온천 문화는 몸을 담그는 온천이 아닌 마시는 온천으로 콜로나다는 이런 온천 문화에서 비롯된 건축물이다.

Marian Plague Column in Olomouc
Marian columns are religious monuments built in honour of the Virgin Mary, often in thanksgiving for the ending of a plague or for some other help. The purpose of the Holy Trinity columns was usually simply to celebrate the church and the faith. However, the plague motif could sometimes play its role in their erection as well. Erecting religious monuments in the form of a column surmounted by a figure or a Christian symbol was a gesture of public faith that flourished in the Catholic countries of Europe especially in the 17th and 18th centuries. Thus they became one of the most visible features of Baroque architecture. This usage also influenced some Eastern Orthodox Baroque architecture.

While on our Viking cruise on the Danube river, my mom & I head off on an all-day excursion to Cesky Krumlov, a town in the Czech Republic! The town is also an UNESCO World Heritage Site. My dad's family is from the Czech Republic, so it was truly AWESOME to visit half of my heritage!
