Maribor In Your Pocket - Glavni Trg & Plague Column (Kužno Znamenje)
Erected in 1743 to replace an older version, Maribor's loveliest monument serves the unfortunate purpose of commemorating the cessation of a plague, which killed over one third of the city's inhabitants between 1680-81. The large monument, designed by Jožef Štraub, dominates Glavni Trg (the main square) and features a golden Mary atop an 8 metre column surrounded by six saints.

Top best places to visit in Maribor, Slovenia
Maribor is the second most important center and the second largest city of Slovenia.
Maribor, set amid the wine-region hills of the Pohorje Mountain, is the real Pride of Styria, a traditional region in northeastern Slovenia.
The city’s old town is situated on the left bank of the river Drava. On the Main Square is the Town Hall and... the Plague Memorial, which commemorates the “black death” that devastated the city in 1680.
The Castle Square, the core of city center, is very popular among locals, with the St Florian Statue in the middle and, built in the 15th century, the Maribor Castle.
Next to this, one of the most remarkable architectonic buildings in the city, are the National Liberation Monument and... the ‘Reddish’' Franciscan Church.
The most important sacred temple in the city, the Maribor Cathedral, a Roman Catholic church, stands on the Slomskov Square, one of the most charming places in the city. The small park is surrounded also by the Post of Slovenia, the University of Maribor and the National Theater.
Of the remnants of city walls surrounding the old town, the most prominent are:
The Judgment Tower, a fortified medieval structure.
Built to secure city walls from the direction of the river, the Water Tower.
One of the oldest preserved synagogues in Europe, and one of only two left in Slovenia, the Maribor Synagogue.
And the Old Vine House, a museum dedicated to this 450 year old tree which still gives grapes.
But the real charm of the city is hidden between the lovely streets and squares in the old town.
Despite the relative small size, Maribor has a surprisingly big green space, the Mestni Park.
And a big football arena, the Ljudski Vrt Stadium, the home ground of Maribor Football Club.
The Piramida Hill is a good place to see the city from high up, from the spot the Maribor Castle used to stand, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the whole city.

MARIBOR - Slovenia Travel Guide | Around The World
Maribor is the second-largest city in Slovenia with 94,876 inhabitants as of 1 January 2017. It is also the largest city of the traditional region of Lower Styria and the seat of the City Municipality of Maribor.
Many historical structures stand in Maribor. Of the remains of city walls surrounding the old downtown, the most prominent are the Judgement Tower, the Water Tower, and the Jewish Tower. Maribor Cathedral was built in the Gothic style in the 13th century. Maribor Synagogue was built in the 14th century, and is the second oldest synagogue of Europe. Today it serves as a centre for cultural activities. Other prominent Medieval buildings are Maribor Castle, Betnava Castle, and the ruins of Upper Maribor Castle on Pyramid Hill. Town Hall was constructed in the Renaissance style, and the Plague Column in the Baroque style.
At the start of the 21st century, plans were made for a new modern business, residential and entertainment district, called the Drava Gate (Dravska vrata) and nicknamed the Maribor Manhattan. The project includes many new exclusive residential apartments, offices and conference halls, a green and recreational space, and other structures. It also includes a 111 m (364 ft) tall skyscraper that would be the tallest building in Slovenia. Due to lack of finances, the project has been postponed.
In 2008, the Studenci Footbridge (Studenška brv) was renovated according to the design of the Ponting company. The design was awarded that year at the 3rd International Footbridge Conference in Porto.
In 2010, Maribor organised an international architectural competition ECC Maribor 2012 – Drava 2012 to gather proposals for the design and reconstruction of the Drava banks, the construction of a new art gallery, and for a new footbridge. Its jury received about 400 proposals for the three different projects. The footbridge and the river embankments will be built in the near future, but the art gallery was replaced with a cultural center MAKS, which is currently under construction.
The construction of a new modern Faculty of Medicine started in 2011 near the Drava River. It was designed by architect Boris Podrecca and was completed in 2013.
There are plans to renovate the Maribor Public Library and Town Hall Square (Rotovški trg). In addition, the renovation of Maribor Island (Mariborski otok) in the Drava River has been planned.
The city hosts the University of Maribor, established in 1975, and many other schools.
Every June, the two-week Lent Festival (named after the waterfront district called Lent) is held, with hundreds of musical, theatrical and other events. Every year the festival attracts theatre, opera, ballet performers, classical, modern, and jazz musicians and dancers from all over the world, and of course many visitors. There is also mime, magic shows are being held and acrobats perform during the festival.
Maribor is known for wine and culinary specialities of international and Slovene cuisine (mushroom soup with buckwheat mush, tripe, sour soup, sausages with Sauerkraut, cheese dumplings, apple strudel, special cheese cake called gibanica). There are also many popular restaurants with Serbian cuisine. The Vinag Wine Cellar (Vinagova vinska klet), with the area of 20.000 m2 (215.28 sq ft) and the length of 2 km (1 mi), keeps 5,5 millions litres of wine. The house of the oldest grapevine in the world (Hiša stare trte) at Lent grows the world's oldest grapevine, which was in 2004 recorded in Guinness World Records. The grapevine of Žametovka is about 440 years old.
The most listened radio stations transmitting from Maribor are the commercial radio stations Radio City and Radio Net FM. They are followed by the national non-commercial Radio Maribor.
The alternative scene of Maribor is situated in the Pekarna (Bakery; former squat) area next to Magdalena Park.

Maribor In Your Pocket - Maribor Cathedral
First built in 1248 as a Romanesque basilica with a nave and two aisles, the cathedral gained its current appearance in the 15th century as a Gothic structure, though the Baroque chapels date from the 16th and 18th centuries. Inside, one is treated to the sight of a lavishly adorned altar, which lights up the place all on its own. Don't miss the stained glass window commemorating Pope John Paul II's trip to Slovenia in 1999. Trips to the top of the tower are also available from 08:00-18:00.

Maribor In Your Pocket - Maribor Castle
It doesn't look much like a castle in the traditional sense - more like a rather grand administrative building - but this is largely due to the fact that it has gone through more than its fair share of modifications since the original Gothic structure was built in 1555 as a noble residence. Renaissance-style fortifications were added in the 17th century, along with the southern façade, and the 18th century saw the current staircase installed. Now, it is home to the Regional Museum of Maribor, which boasts an impressive collection of artifacts from around the area. Admission €3/2/0.85 for adults/students/children.

Maribor In Your Pocket - National Liberation Monument
Appropriately located in Trg Svobode ('Freedom Square'), this spherical bronze memorial pays tribute to those gunned down by the Nazis during World War II for rising up against occupation. By walking around the monument you can look at public announcements of the executions of the 667 people who were condemned to death by the German forces. Erected in 1975, the sculpture is the work of local artist Slavko Tihec, and despite its sombre purpose the good citizenry of Maribor have dubbed the monument 'Kojak' because of its resemblance to a bald head.
