Playa Santa Maria in Cadiz, Spain
A busy day on the beautiful Playa Santa Maria, Cadiz in Spain. Background music is Tonto by Silent Partner.
Victoria Beach, Cádiz, Andalusia, Spain, Europe
La Playa de la Victoria (or Playa Victoria) is an urban beach located on the Costa de la Luz, outside the city of Cadiz (Spain), with approximately 3 kilometers long on the Atlantic coast. It is considered the best urban beach in Europe 1 and has been receiving the Blue Flag uninterruptedly from 1987 to 2011.2 It is also the first beach in Spain which also has an environmental management certification and Q for Quality. The Victoria Beach is recognized among the six highest quality beaches in Spain, and possesses since August 2004 Seal Q for Quality awarded by the Institute for Spanish Tourism Quality (ICTE), an agency of the General Secretariat Tourism Ministry of Economy. Although most of those who enjoy the beach Victoria in the summer months are the gaditanos own, there are many who, by public transport or tourism, come to spend the day at the beach. We must mention that tourism in Cádiz is not as advertised or known much like other coastal cities, either Spain, and the same province: Chiclana and the area of La Barrosa, Barbate and Los Canos de Meca or El Puerto de Santa María and Valdelagrana are examples of more widespread tourism. The hospitality around the beach is centered near the Plaza Ingeniero La Cierva, with some of the most prestigious hotels in the city. Also typical local products can be tasted in establishments located along the promenade, many of which have terraces or upper floors where you can see the beach: Bars, seafood and restaurants of different types. The beach of Victoria, whose geographical coordinates are between 36 ° 29 '42 N - 6 ° 16' 20 W and 36 ° 31 '03 N - 06 ° 17' 11 O, measured between 2.5 and 3.5 km, has a slope of 6% and a width close, at low tide, 200 m, thanks in part to project feedback urban beaches of Cadiz, made in 2003. the sands of the beach are thin type, gold tone and siliceous. The Victoria is located in the southwestern part of the city of Cádiz. Part of the Gulf of Cádiz, which is bathed, in all its route over the Atlantic Ocean. It borders to the north with the beach of Santa Maria del Mar, while south meets Wall Shear, which separates La Victoria Cutting beach. The beach is separated from the city by the waterfront, in the avenue of the same name, and that of Hamilcar Barca, a continuation of the previous one. In the early twentieth century, the city of Cádiz was economically depressed: On one hand, the loss of the last colonies in America after the 98 Disaster wiped trade with them; otherwise, the demolition of the walls of the city to conduct their own works of expansion meant a huge cost. In this expansion project, the City includes lifting a set of four suburbs, to clear the grounds of Intramuros with the name of Queen Victoria. In the area to the south of the city, just known as Campo del Sur, and sufficient distance from the military zone of the city, Playa del Sur was. Due to its distance from the nucleus of Intramuros, decides to build a resort medicinal waters in line with the emerging tourism in the country, but that also is accessible to all classes of the city. This spa, which opened its doors to the public between 1907 and 1931 and whose hollow houses the hotel that replaced it was called Spa Queen Victoria. However, there are doubts whether the beach was named Spa directly or through it, new neighborhoods. The territory of the province of Cádiz is a consequence of the formation, during the Miocene, the Alps mountain range, which produced the superposition of the oldest materials in the area of the most modern, while approaching each other's European and African plates. It is at this time when the Guadalquivir valley or south of the Iberian Peninsula begin to be progressively above sea level. Regarding the Cadiz coast, the origin of the Bay of Cádiz and the beaches of its surroundings can be dated around the upper Miocene, as a result of a tectonic depression, which, during the Pliocene and part of the Pleistocene, was occupied by who set a delta coastline. The sand, limestone and conglomerate deposited there led to the typical oyster stone, with which were built and are still adorn many buildings in the area. 20,000 years ago, this delta was sinking due to the change in sea level, until shortly before the Holocene, from which began to stabilize. In subsequent decades, the completion of the sea level rise due to heating of the polar caps, began to deposit sand on the edge of that coast and nearby islands emerged in the bay: Cimbis, Erytheia and Kotinoussa. Throughout the centuries, these deposits became the foundation grounds of Cadiz and San Fernando. Near the beach are the mudflats and salt marshes, which were an important economic resource of both cities until the 1980s.
