Merced, California
Merced (Spanish for Mercy) is a city in, and the county seat of, Merced County, California, United States, in the San Joaquin Valley. As of 2014, the city had a population of 81,743. Incorporated on April 1, 1889, Merced is a charter city that operates under a council-manager government. It is named after the Merced River, which flows nearby.
Merced, known as the Gateway to Yosemite, is less than two hours by automobile from Yosemite National Park to the east and Monterey Bay, the Pacific Ocean, and multiple beaches to the west. The community is served by the passenger rail service Amtrak, a minor, heavily subsidized airline through Merced Regional Airport, and three bus lines. It is approximately from Sacramento, from San Francisco, from Fresno, and from Los Angeles.
In 2005, the city became home to the 10th University of California campus, University of California, Merced (UC Merced), the first research university built in the U.S. in the 21st century.
Since 2005, Merced has been home to University of California, Merced. Current recreational opportunities in the city include and zoo, Bear and Black Rascal Creeks and their bike trails, a skate park located in Applegate, Playhouse Merced, a live-stage theater , two first-run movie theaters, The Mainzer Theater which is known for its historic and architectural value, the circa 1889, the Merced Multicultural Arts Center and the . Though still growing, Merced has several shopping areas including the Merced Mall, anchored by Target, Sears, JCPenney and Kohl's, a strip mall located on the city's northwest side which includes Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Lowe's, Wal-Mart, and several restaurants. Merced Theatre
The Merced Theatre opened on October 31st , 1931 with the world premier of Local Boy Makes Good staring Joe E. Brown. The building was constructed over the previous nine months at a cost of $380,000.00. For the next 47 years it would serve the Merced community in a wide variety of ways including concerts, graduations, dance performances, weddings and of course, movies. It was and still is treasured by the people of Merced County. The Tower is the most recognized landmark in Merced.
The Theatre was designed by the Reid Brothers , prestigious architects from San Francisco for the Golden State Theatre Corporation, and boasted 1,645 seats with the first air conditioning for any building in the County. The City of Merced had a population of only 7,066 at the time. We believe the Theatre is the last project completed by the Reid Brothers as one of them died 3 months after the opening. The Theatre building includes five retail spaces and ten second-floor apartments on the Main Street frontage.
What made the Theatre so special was the Theatre's in
In 2002 the City of Merced Redevelopment Agency purchased the Theatre Building. Since that time the Merced Theatre Foundation has leased the Theatre from the City and is responsible for day to day operations. Theatre two remained operational for several years and the Foundation held monthly movies and other events by arrangement.
Funding for this Project has been provided in part by the California Cultural and Historical Endowment.

The Merced Feud Featuring MSEFCU
The Staff at Merced School Employees Federal Credit had a blast participating in Merced Feud at Playhouse Merced recently. Check out their great experience!
In 1954 seven Merced school employees looking for a safe and affordable place to save and borrow money, came together to start Merced School Employees Federal Credit Union. Robert Wayne, one of the founding seven and Manager for 39 years, ran the credit union out of a shoe box in his apartment for the first four years! Since our humble beginning, MSEFCU has grown to four full service brick and mortar branches in Merced County and four student-run branches in local area high schools. We have real vaults too, no more shoe boxes!
We provide a full array of financial products and services - from traditional savings plans, loans, investments, and checking accounts, to 24/7 convenience services.
We've proudly served our hometown since 1954! Experience the MSEFCU Difference!
