Vegan Polish Cooking Class in Warsaw
Review of Polish Your Cooking in Warsaw |
After taking cooking classes in Bali, Thailand, and Vietnam, we decided to end our three months abroad with one final vegan cooking class...in Poland! As a first generation Pole, Darlene grew up eating and helping her mom make traditional Polish foods, so we were really excited about joining the crew at Polish Your Cooking for their Sunday class!
When we Googled things to do in Warsaw, one thing that kept coming up was the cooking class with Polish Your Cooking. Well, you don't have to tell us twice to take a cooking class, and luckily they had no problem accommodating our vegan diet.
Like everything in Warsaw, the class was really close to the city center and easy to get to by local transportation and walking. We took the tram from our Airbnb, stopped off at Old Town for a bit, then had no problems getting to the building that the class was in—which happened to be an old converted prison.
Our instructor Magda greeted us and went over the things we would make and how she modified her usual recipes to be vegan for us. The menu for the day included apple pancakes and two kinds of pierogis—one called ruskie filled with potatoes, garlic, and onion, and the other simply filled with blueberries.
There were eight other people in our class, so it was really nice to chat and mingle with them throughout the day, which actually seemed to be a component of the class. When comparing the Polish cooking class to the others we took in Asia, the social aspect of this one was much more prominent, which is very fitting for the culture. Other classes we took focused more on making several dishes, whereas in this one we only made two things, but spent a lot of time sitting around the table talking like you would at a traditional Polish family holiday meal.
We'd like to thank our instructor Magda and everyone at Polish Your Cooking for the great experience! Dziękuję!
Hope you enjoy!

25 Things to do in Warsaw, Poland | Top Attractions Travel Guide
This was our first trip to Poland and we dove into the capital headfirst. While our travels may have started in the charming Old Town, it wasn't long before we discovered that Warsaw has a cool artsy side. We visited bright neon museums in the art district, shopped in boutiques selling soviet-chic apparel, and got to experience the capital's legendary nightlife. It many ways it was a whirlwind visit, but it was also a fun introduction that made us curious to discover more of Poland in our future travels. The following video will highlight 25 things to do in Warsaw and give you a glimpse into this up and coming capital.

Well hello and welcome to Warszawa. This week we are exploring the Polish capital. We've already been here a few days and it has been amazing. It has been such a pleasant surprise and unlike any part of Europe we've traveled in so far. So yeah, this week we're going to be highlighting 25 things to do around the city and we're excited to show you what it is all about.
We came to Warsaw with little to no expectations and the city completely surprised us. Warsaw is quickly rising through the ranks and we think it won't be long before travellers are flocking en masse. So if you're planning a trip to Poland, don't skip over the capital because there is more to Warsaw than meets the eye.

Bigos: Eating Polish Hunter's Stew in Warsaw, Poland
So far in Poland we've been enjoying hearty meals typically rich in portions of meat and potatoes. Continuing with this theme we tried Bigos, after a recommendation from a Polish born man now living in the US, which is known as Hunter's Stew consisting of fermented cabbage, sauerkraut (known locally as kapusta kiszona), Polish sausage (kielbasa) and various other kinds of vegetables and meats. Upon first glance it is not the most appealing looking dish; however, it is really tasty and flavorful with a strong sour flavor due to the fermented cabbage. If you're in Warszawa, or anywhere in Poland for that matter, be sure to try Bigos!

Bigos: Eating Polish Hunter's Stew in Warsaw, Poland Travel Video Transcript:
So it is lunchtime over here and we are in Warsaw's old town. Today we are going to be sampling something called Bigos which is a traditional Polish dish. And it consists of different meats and cabbage. So we've just ordered our food and now we're waiting for it to get here.
So tell us the tail of how we learned about Bigos. While we were traveling on the train from Berlin to Warszawa were met this Polish guy who spent a lot of time in the US. And basically he was raving about this Bigos. This Hunter's stew. So this is the reason why we're trying. A recommendation from a local basically.
Alright, so my lunch has arrived. Low and behold here is my Bigos. And this may look like a small portion but that is just because I ordered it as an appetizer. And you can normally get it in a bread bowl or you can get it with a side of potatoes. I got some sliced bread here in the basket so I'm going to be trying that. And also, I've learned that no two Bigos recipes are the same. It is basically just a mix of different cuts of meat. You can have beef, veal, pork, venison, rabbit. Whatever you want to throw in there it works.
So I've got a nice fork full of cabbage and some kind of meat. Let's see if I can decipher what it is.
Okay. That is really good. The cabbage it almost tastes a little bit fermented but it is not as strong as sauerkraut.
And the meat, I think it might be beef. It's a familiar flavor.
So time for your first fork full. Yeah!
Yeah, you're right. That is really good. I like that is has a bit of sour taste. That is really appealing for me.
And what is cool about Bigos is that it literally means big mess, big confusion and so if you look down here that is exactly what it looks like. It just looks like a hodgepodge of all different kinds of things. Vegetables, meats, cabbage. And that is exactly what Bigos is.
Okay, so apparently Bigos is the kind of dish that you can refrigerate. And then reheat and that is meant to make the flavors a lot stronger. And it is also the kind of dish that keeps on giving. So that means if you start running low you can just add some cabbage, add some meat and make it last for a week.
Alrighty, so that was delicious. What is the price point for the Hunter's Stew? So if you want to pickup the Hunter's Stew while you're in Poland you can expect to pay the equivalent of five to seven Euros. And definitely we recommend it. It's delicious and it is very hearty and just an awesome meal.
