Can Bookstores Survive in D.C.?
Although Washington, D.C., is considered one of the United States' book meccas, it has still managed to experience the loss of several major bookstores in the last few years. Still, some stores -- among them, Politics and Prose -- have managed to survive and thrive despite the downturn in this industry.

Preet Bharara, Doing Justice
Preet Bharara discusses the Mueller Report and his new book, Doing Justice, at a Politics and Prose event at Sixth and I on 4/18/19.
In Doing Justice, one-time federal prosecutor Preet Bharara uses case histories, personal experiences, and his own inviting writing and teaching style to show the thought process we need to best achieve truth and justice in our daily lives and within our society. Bharara has spent much of his life examining our legal system, pushing to make it better, and prosecuting those looking to subvert it; he believes in our system and knows it must be protected, but to do so, we must also acknowledge and allow for flaws in the system and in human nature. Ultimately, Doing Justice is an inspiring, thought-provoking, and entertaining book about the need to find the humanity in our legal system–and in our society.
Bharara is in conversation with Bianna Golodryga, journalist and CNN contributor.
PREET BHARARA served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017. Bharara oversaw the investigation and litigation of all criminal and civil cases and supervised an office of more than two hundred Assistant U.S. Attorneys, who handled cases involving terrorism, narcotics and arms trafficking, financial and healthcare fraud, cybercrime, public corruption, gang violence, organized crime, and civil rights violations. In 2017, Bharara joined the NYU School of Law faculty as a Distinguished Scholar in Residence. He is the Executive Vice President of Some Spider Studios and the host of CAFE's Stay Tuned with Preet, a podcast focused on issues of justice and fairness. Bharara graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College and from Columbia Law School, where he was a member of the law review.

Stephen L. Carter, Invisible
Stephen L. Carter discusses his book, Invisible, at Politics and Prose on 10/23/18.
When Thomas Dewey, the legendary New York City prosecutor and district attorney, went after organized crime in the 1930s, he selected twenty top-notch lawyers to help. All but one were white men. Eunice Hunton Carter (1899-1970), the team’s only black woman, turned out to be pivotal to Dewey’s eventual prosecution of underworld criminals, including Lucky Luciano. In his new book, Carter, the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law at Yale and the author of many works of fiction and nonfiction, tells the life of his remarkable grandmother. The granddaughter of slaves, Eunice Carter graduated from Smith College and Fordham Law School. By the 1940s she was one of the most famous African-American women in the country. Yet despite her achievements she faced persistent racial bias, and her career was complicated by her brother’s membership in the Communist Party.
Stephen L. Carter is the bestselling author of several novels—including The Emperor of Ocean Park and New England White—and over half a dozen works of non-fiction. Formerly a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, he is the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law at Yale University, where he has taught for more than thirty years. He and his wife live in Connecticut.

DC bar patrons voice opinions of the Impeachment
(18 Dec 2019) As the U.S. House is poised to impeach President Donald Trump in a historic nighttime vote that is splitting lawmakers along party lines, some watching the historic event from a Capitol Hill watering hole voice striking opinions and observations.
I don't think it will eventually pass the Senate. I think his base will become a lot stronger because you know, he has a strong base says Maryland resident Mudassar Hanley, so he might end up coming out of this stronger.
Hanley while watching the proceedings in the Hawk and Dove restaurant says compared to the Bill Clinton impeachment which focused around personal indiscretions, the impeachment of Trump is in line with the Articles presented by the House.
This type of stuff - obstruction, foreign interference in elections, I think is definitely an impeachable offense, Hanley says.
While watching some of the debate, one patron, Angela says, I find it very interesting...It's accountability. To me, I mean, it's really the idea of democracy in action and that's why I like being an American. To argue over important issues.
