Hiking near Peggy's Cove: West Dover Provincial Park and Polly's Cove
An attempt at hiking the trail in West Dover Provincial Park and some goofing off at Polly's Cove. We were turned back by overly wet conditions in West Dover PP but the sun shone upon us at Polly's. Both these trails are in sight of the world famous Peggy's Cove but get only a few visitors. Highly recommend you check our Polly's Cove if you are able as it way more fun the tourist clogged Peggy's Cove. We'll go back to West Dover PP when it is a bit drier and try to get the whole trail done.

West Dover Provincial Park - Hiking in Nova Scotia
We drove out to Peggy's Cove to check out a designated Provincial Park in West Dover to explore the trails known as The land of confusion.
It's called that as there are a spier web of current & old trails along with ATV trails. So there are multiple ways to do the same segment.
We started out at a parking lot across the road from the baseball field and the terrain is pretty much something from Lord of the Rings, barrens with large granite boulders sprinkled across the land.
The landscape is one of a handful of areas where the ice age receded, the ice dragged the granite boulders all over the place - called Glacial erratics.
In the distance we can see the community of Peggy's Cove. The terrain is mostly rolling hills. Along the way, we noticed on top of the highest point what looked liked chairs - so we decided to try to reach that point.
Trying to figure out the route to get on the right path to get to the highest point was the challenge, but we reached the top and was greeted with a picnic table so that we could take a break and overlook the view.
We took about 3 hours to complete our 4km loop, there is a 8km version that you can attempt but the exact trail may be hard to distinguish.
While the elevation is easy navigating, the terrain is granite with barrens growth; you will need adequate footwear and gear as the rocks can be slippery when wet. I would leave the kids and pets at home as some section may be challenging and potential for injury is present.

Polly's Cove, Nova Scotia
Hike at Polly's Cove, Nova Scotia. You can find Polly's Cove about 1.5 km before Peggy's Cove when coming from Halifax along Hwy 333. This is a Scenic Coastal Hike with all kinds of terrain. Making this a mod to hard hike, your choice. Sometimes whales can be spotted here. You can also see Peggy's Cove from here. We found a sweet sandy beach to get into the water and cool off. We stuck to the rocks and paths in order to protect ecosystem, but sometimes had to sneak through small patches (carefully). Great hike, so much to see....bring lots of water! Don't miss out on this little know gem!
Polly Cove Nova Scotia
Description from Trails Nova Scotia
This is an informal trail established by continuous use, with no known trail maintance. For the first 450 metres the trail is an old cart road going slightly uphill lined with speckled alder, spruce and tamarack trees. Closer to the ground you can find rock barrens covered by moss, blueberries, partridgeberries, and purple aster flowers.
About 300 metres in from the parking are is a trail on the right that leads to Polly Cove.
This foot path travels between the rocks and is bordered by more blueberry and partridgeberry bushes. Juniper and pitcher plants are also common on this path. Once you reach the end of the trail on the hill, there is a neat view of Peggys Cove and the lighthouse on your right. Look for seals and a variety of shore birds, gulls, and cormorants.
If you choose to stay on the main path, you will find an odd foundation that was never finished at the top of the hill. There are numerous foot paths that lead to the shore, and travel close to the water. Please stay on the well-trodden trails, and do not make new ones, as this practice can damage plant life.
You can go quite close to the water, or stay up on top of the cliff to get a good view of the surrounding area. The village of West Dover can be seen from the higher elevations.
Flora includes orange wall lichen on the rocks, mossy foot paths, pitcher plants maybe found along boggy areas, and blue flag flowers. Some snakes might be found in the bushes.
Most facilities can be found in Peggys Cove about 1.5 km down the road. Exercise caution on this trail as the footing can be rough, wet and slippery in areas.

Hiking Trails of Nova Scotia - Pollys Cove
Polly's Cove is a hidden gem on the coastline just a few kilometers from the much more famous - and crowded - Peggys Cove. The landscape is the same, but chances are that you will be alone to enjoy the starkly beautiful coastal barrens.
A route description may be found in Trails of Halifax Regional Municipality, 2nd edition.

Duncan's Cove Hiking Trail - Halifax Nova Scotia Canada
A very beautiful and very popular short hiking trail near Halifax in the small coastal town of Duncan's Cove. This is an non-maintained, unmarked trail that is very well established due to the number of people who hike the trail. I'm a bit chattier on this video than I usually am for some reason.
The most commonly used trail head is at a gated private driveway with a posted no-trespassing sign. The driveway leads up to the Whalesback house where the overland trail begins. If that makes you uncomfortable there are some other trails through the nature reserve (we enter the trail on one of them.)

Hiking Halifax, Nova Scotia's Backlands - January 2018
A break in the Polar Vortex brought temperatures up to a reasonable level for a couple of days so I headed out to fly my new drone ( in one of my favourite exploration destinations in Halifax. The Purcell's Cove Backlands are a unique granite barren landscape that makes for an other-wordly vibe. It's a very popular spot with mountain bikers and it's easy to see why.

Solo Hiking and Camping in Rogue's Roost Wilderness Area - Terence Bay Nova Scotia Canada
First time back to the Roost since last year. An overnight excursion into the Rogue's Roost Wilderness Area in Terence Bay, Nova Scotia on Victoria Day and the following Tuesday. 20km in the back country over coastal barrens covered in swamps and glacial erratics. I need to jury rig something on the camera to block that wind noise out for my next trip. Should be tolerable however. Hopefully some of you enjoy this video. Thanks for watching.
Day Hike at Kejimkujik Seaside Adjunct, 10.5km in Port Joli, Nova Scotia
A very easy dayhike at Kejimkujik Seaside Adjunct National Park. Bear poop, cranberries, spiderwebs and fog abound. Port Joli Nova Scotia.
Full hike of the park's trails - Port Joli Head Trail and the Harbour Rocks Trail. Trails is a bit of a misnomer - manicured paths would be more apt.
