Albi’s Pont-vieux is a bridge of medieval origin still in use. While visiting the city, crossing it gives you one of the most beautiful panoramas on the Berbie Palace and Saint Cecilia’s Cathedral. The link between the two banks of the Tarn, the Pont-vieux is a patrimonial element of Albi, within the UNESCO classification of the Episcopal City and classified as a historical monument since 1961.
Imagine this bridge, 151m long, safeguarded at each end by drawbridges, which explains why the arches are narrower there. It was defended at the centre by the fortified Notre Dame tower, which has since disappeared.
Looking into history: In 1040, the construction of a bridge was decided upon and funded by a portion of the revenue from the ferry operated by the chapter to cross the Tarn. At that time, France was experiencing ‘bridge fever’ due to the development of traffic, a consequence of productive, demographic and commercial growth.
In the 16th century, this bridge had a different appearance, as half-timbered 60 to 80 m2 houses straddled the roadway. 11 families lived there, tanners, shoemakers, weavers, fullers, a fruit merchant. In 1766, following a major flood of the Tarn, the city bought the damaged houses to destroy them.
In the 12th century, Albi was at an important crossroads on the routes between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, between the Basque country and Toulouse and Lyon, and between Catalonia and Paris. Fairs and markets played a key role. As a point of passage, the Pont-vieux was able to levy a toll. A very complete price list, dated 1245, includes 200 articles among which were;
foodstuffs
raw materials for tannery, tanning and the textile industry
finished products, utensils and work tools
the trade in Carmaux coal and pastels.
This document is a very rich source of information about daily life, the nature of trade in the Albi market, the diversity of measures and the nature of transport. In the Middle Ages, the Tarn was the base of an important river trade that was done on boats called scows. The Port Vielh of Albi, below the old bridge, was alive with life and various activities until the late eighteenth century. Today, scows can still be seen on the Tarn. The fleet of ‘Albi croisières’ is a nod to this historical tradition and gives a different viewpoint of the City, its bridges and its geographical location. In Albi, we enjoy cruising

Albi is a town on the Tarn River in southern France, northeast of Toulouse. Dominating the skyline is the 13th-century, red-brick Sainte-Cécile Cathedral, a Gothic landmark with large interior frescoes such as the dramatic “Last Judgment.” The centuries-old Palais de la Berbie houses the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, honoring the Albi-born painter. The Fashion Museum, in a former convent, shows 18th–20th-century costumes.
While it is not exactly undiscovered, Albi is one of those French provincial cities that has only recently come into its own as a tourist destination. The change in the city's fate came in 2009, when its episcopal area - comprising the cathedral and the Palais de la Berbie, the bishop's palace - was classed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
A small city standing on the banks of the river Tarn, Albi has a history rooted in the religious conflicts of the Middle Ages. The Albigensian Crusade (1209-1229) was the only medieval crusade conducted not against Islam, but against Christians, specifically against the Cathars, who practiced a form of proto-Protestantism, refusing the authority of the Catholic church.
Albi, capital of the Tarn department, is arguably the most interesting small city in the Midi-Pyrenees region. St. Cecilia's cathedral has always been a remarkable and unique monument, being both fortified and built of brick. On the outside, it looks like some gargantuan array of medieval grain silos; inside, it is all delicate gothic tracery in stone and wood, one of the finest late gothic buildings in France. Of particular interest are the massive murals of the Last judgement, that decorate the whole of the cathedral's western wall.
It is the only large gothic cathedral built out of brick rather than stone - brick being the trditional building material in the area of Albi as in nearby Toulouse and much of the Tarn and Garonne plains.
Next to the cathedral stands the similarly massive and fortified Bishop's palace, Toulouse Lautrec museum. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1864-1901, was the great post-impressionist iconographer of Parisian life in the late nineteenth century; he was a native of Albi, and the museum hosts the largest collection of his work, along with a representative collection of late 19th century French art.
Beside the west end of the cathedral, a pedestrian piazza takes you to a vantage point overlooking the river Tarn below, and the old bishop's gardens. Upstream from the cathedral can be seen the Old Bridge, a thousand years old, and still in service today. The bridge can be reached on foot by taking a short walk down the street in front of the entrance to the Toulouse Lautrec museum. The old city of Albi, with its narrow pedestrian streets and historic buildings, is clustered round the cathedral. Of particular interest is the XIIth - XIIIth collegial church of Saint Salvi, with its cloisters.

Located in the Cordeliers cultural district, the Rochegude Park, ranked Remarkable Garden in 2010, is an emblematic place of the city. Classic French garden, English garden, bird island, remarkable trees, waterfall ... everything invites you to relax in the park Rochegude. Created in the 19th century, this public park was originally a private park, that of Admiral Pascal de Rochegude.
Rear-Admiral and deputy to the Convention, died March 16, 1834, he bequeathed to the city of Albi by will of August 10, 1826 and his codicils of 1832 and 1833, his hotel with its outbuildings and its rich library. In 1834, the town had to seek the agreement of King Louis-Philippe to accept these legacies, which was granted. Upon the death of the Admiral's niece, the hotel was turned into a museum and library. As for the park, it was open to the public.
The Rochegude Park, green lung of Albi of four hectares is articulated around three distinct parts, the Renaissance Hotel, become municipal library then place of exhibition, the French gardens of carved boxwood punctuated with bins of orangery and the English-style section below, on the site of the former farm with vegetable garden, meadow and orchard.
Botany enthusiast, HP de Rochegude asked the city, in return for his legacy, the planting of dozens of remarkable trees: libocèdre, California umbellulaire, sequoia sempervirens, plane trees, magnolias, bald cypresses, are then planted.
Throughout his life, the Admiral had a vow to see his park become a botanical garden one day. The presence of rare species and the planting of various and varied species contribute greatly. The Rochegude Park remains an invaluable heritage for the city of Albi and a public garden of great quality that deserves the attention and respect of all.

Places to see in ( Albi - France ) Cathedrale Sainte Cecile
The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Cecilia, also known as Albi Cathedral, is the most important Catholic building in Albi, France and is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Albi. First built as a fortress in the aftermath of the Albigensian Crusade; begun in 1282 and under construction for 200 years, it is claimed to be the largest brick building in the world. In 2010 the cathedral was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The present cathedral was preceded by other buildings. The first dated from the fourth century and in 666 was destroyed by fire. The second is recorded in 920 by the name of Saint Cecilia, the present-day patroness of musicians. It was replaced in the thirteenth century by a Romanesque cathedral in stone.
The Brick Gothic cathedral was constructed in brick between 1287 and 1480 in the wake of the crusade against Cathar Church, a heterodox non-trinitarian dualist movement with an episcopal see at Albi around 1165 AD. Pope Innocent III initiated a crusade (Cathar Crusade, 1209–1229) to extinguish Catharism in southern France, with great loss of life. In the aftermath of the bloodshed, the cathedral's dominant presence and fortress-like exterior were intended to convey the power and authority of the trinitarian Roman Catholic Church. The instigator of the cathedral's construction was Bernard de Castanet, Roman Catholic Bishop of Albi and Inquisitor of Languedoc. Work on the nave was completed about 1330.
The cathedral is built in the Southern Gothic Style. As suitable building stone is not found locally, the structure is built almost entirely of brick. Notable architectural features include the bell-tower (added in 1492), which stands 78 metres (256 ft) tall, and the doorway by Dominique de Florence (added circa 1392). The nave is the widest Gothic example in France at 60 feet (18 m). The interior lacks aisles which are replaced by rows of small chapels between brick internal buttresses, making Albi a hall church. Compared with regular Gothic, the buttreses are almost entirely submerged in the mass of the church. The principal entry is on the south side through an elaborate porch entered by a fortified stair, rather than through the west front, as is traditional in France.
The elaborate interior stands in stark contrast to the cathedral's military exterior. The central chœur, reserved for members of the religious order, is surrounded by a roodscreen with detailed filigree stone work and a group of polychrome statues. Below the organ, a fresco of the Last Judgement, attributed to unknown Flemish painters, originally covered nearly 200 m² (the central area was later removed). The frescoes on the enormous vaulted ceiling comprise the largest and oldest ensemble of Italian Renaissance painting in France. The cathedral organ, the work of Christophe Moucherel, dates from the 18th century.

Geschiedenis

It is from the terrace that you will enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramas on the Episcopal City: the river, the gabarres on the Tarn, the roofs of Old Alby
The Lapérouse museum , one of the seven museums of the city of Albi , is located near the Pont-Vieux , next to the Tarn . It is dedicated to the browser Lapérouse and receives nearly 12 000 visitors per year since 2010. Located in the old Albigensian mills , this place was restored in 1986, before the museum was created in 1988 by the Albi City Council and Lapérouse Albi-France (then presided over by ophthalmologist Pierre Amalric ). Simultaneously, the museum is managed by this association.
The attendance of the museum was not very important at first ( 6,500 visitors in 1993) and tending to decrease each year, a project was established by the town hall and the association to raise awareness of the museum. The museum mainly presents the history of the Albigensian navigator Jean-François de La Pérouse, his journey (from the beginning to the end of his journey) and the scientific expeditions carried out in Vanikoro since the sinking. Secondarily, it also evokes his family, the great expeditions of the late xviii th century , browsers that preceded the Pacific , contemporaries of his time and the towns of Albi and Brest as they were at his time.
A total of 640 exhibits are on display at the museum, including various elements of La Perouse's ships ( La Boussole and Astrolabe ), more or less voluminous, as well as other objects found on the site of the sinking and even on the Paiou camp. . With also, various models, paintings, objects that belonged to the family of La Perouse and many others. These works come from several sources including donations and loans, from individuals, other museums or directly from the Salomon association which carries out scientific research in Vanikoro and analyzes the remains. Shaded walkway, located in the heart of the Episcopal City of Albi, the gardens of the Palais de la Berbie offer a panoramic view of the banks of the Tarn, Pont-vieux, the old mills and the Sainte-Cécile cathedral. We need the palace gardens of the Berbie the will of the first archbishop of Albi, Hyacinthe Serroni, who laid out end of the XVII th century a place of pleasure in the former backyard Berbie.
The Palace having lost its defensive function, he turned the walkway into a walk. The boxwood, finely carved, make up the French garden and draw embroidery embellished with colorful plantations. The maintenance of this site is done exclusively manually by an assigned gardener. It deals with watering, weeding, hoeing and box size. Any chemical treatment is prohibited in favor of an integrated biological protection.
Walkers can stroll in the shade of the wild vine arches to contemplate masterpieces of vegetable embroidery, or greet the Four Seasons, graciously carved in marble. By their incredible finesse, these gardens come to sublimate the imposing Palais de la Berbie, which stands proudly as the worthy guardian of the work of Toulouse Lautrec. Pride of the city, the Berbie Palace and its gardens stand out as true pillars of Albigensian heritage, a protected heritage and listed since July 2010 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Places to see in ( Albi - France ) Musee Toulouse Lautrec
The Musée Toulouse-Lautrec is an art museum in Albi, southern France, dedicated mainly to the work of the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec who was born near Albi. The museum opened in 1922 and is located in the historic center of Albi, in the Palais de la Berbie, formerly the Bishops' Palace, an imposing fortress completed at the end of the 13th century.
The museum houses over a thousand works by Toulouse-Lautrec, the largest collection in the world. It is based on a donation by Toulouse-Lautrec's mother after his death in 1901. Lodged inside the Palais de la Berbie (built in the early Middle Ages for the town's archbishop), this wonderful museum offers an overview of Albi's most celebrated son. The museum owns more than 1000 original works by Toulouse-Lautrec – the largest collection in France outside the Musée d'Orsay – spanning the artist's development, from his early neo-impressionist paintings to his famous Parisian brothel scenes and poster art.
Of particular interest are the early portraits of some of Toulouse-Lautrec's friends and family – including his mother, the Comtesse Adèle de Toulouse-Lautrec, his cousin Gabriel Tapié de Celeyran, and his close friend, Maurice Joyant. They clearly demonstrate the artist's wry eye and playful sense of humour. There are also some delicate animal studies (especially of horses).
Inevitably, however, it's the later works that draw the eye. Toulouse-Lautrec's lifelong fascination with the Parisian underworld, particularly the lives of dancers and prostitutes, is brilliantly represented. Look out for key works including L'Anglaise du Star au Havre (Englishwoman of the Star Harbour) and Les Deux Amies (The Two Friends), which depicts two prostitutes embracing while they wait for their clients. Pride of place goes to two versions of one of his most famous canvases, Au Salon de la rue des Moulins, hung side-by-side to illustrate changes in the artist's technique.
Toulouse-Lautrec's skills as a cartoonist and caricaturist also made him a pioneer of poster art, and the museum has a fantastic collection of his most famous designs in its permanent collection.
On the top floor is a small collection of works by some of his contemporaries, including Pierre Bonnard, Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Matisse.

Places to see in ( Montauban - France ) Pont Vieux
The Vieux bridge is a bridge that crosses the Tarn at Montauban in Tarn-et-Garonne. The city of Montauban was founded in the xii th century by the Count of Toulouse Alfonso Jordan is at war against the Duke of Aquitaine William IX . The abbot of Montauriol is favorable to the duke of Aquitaine. Having bought a very large lot on the plateau overlooking the Tarn, the count decides to seize it to create a new city. It takes the name of Monte albanus , mont blanc or Mont des étrangers, become Montauban .
To protect the new inhabitants from abusive actions of the abbots of Montauriol and the feudal lords, the count of Toulouse grants them its protection and a charter of foundation dated October 9, 1144 indicating that the inhabitants of the place will build a bridge on the Tarn. And when the bridge is built, the lord count will agree with six prudhommes, the best councilors, inhabitants of the said place, on the rights they will have to establish, so that said bridge can be maintained and repaired .
The high cost of building the bridge exceeds the financial possibilities of the inhabitants of the city. The city bought the land needed for construction in 1291. In 1304 , Philippe Le Bel ordered its construction. He promises a grant for a bridge to include three good and strong towers and reserves ownership and custody. To finance the work, taxes are created until the end of the construction: tax on all foreigners crossing the city, special taxation applying on Quercy and Toulouse.
The project management of the bridge was entrusted to Étienne de Ferrières, royal lord of Montauban, and Mathieu de Verdun, bourgeois of the city. The bridge construction site is open onJanuary 19, 1311. The surviving written evidence shows that at the beginning of the construction site some of the city's rude officials would have diverted part of the royal subsidies and tolls, and would have refused to participate in the construction of the bridge. Since theAugust 8, 1311, the seneschal of Quercy goes on the spot with two judges, Bernard Gervais and Mathieu de Courtes-Jumelles, sent by the king to examine the progress of the bridge and the use of the collected taxes. The latter makes a report accusing the embezzlers of diversion of subsidies and materials intended for construction. The consuls were ordered to participate in the construction of the bridge and pay the taxes set.
The death of the king in 1314 resulted in the application of the decisions to February 1315. In the presence of the royal commissioners, a joint assembly of the Council of Consuls and the General Council of the city designates four of its members to study the progress of the bridge and expert advice on the duration of the work. They estimate the duration of the works at 20 years and the need to extend the royal commission fees within this period.
The work seems to resume normally but a new dispute appears between the seneschal of Quercy who returns with Mathieu de Courtes-Jumelles and the consuls. The parliament of Paris decides to put under supervision of the king the consulate of Montauban. The king then decides to suspend the consulate and dismisses the culprits with a sentence to pay 20,000 pounds and 1,000 pounds of damages to the judge of Quercy. Étienne de Ferrières and Mathieu de Verdun were dismissed in 1319. They were replaced by Fabris de Montauban and Delpech from the suburbs of the city. In 1323, the consulate is restored. Étienne de Ferrières was rehabilitated in 1321 and Mathieu de Verdun soon after.
The completion date of the bridge is not exactly known due to the loss of part of the city's archives. It is admitted that it is finished in 1335 . It has two towers placed at the ends. The original project planned three towers, but the tower that was to be built in the middle of the bridge, the king's tower, was not executed for some unknown reason. Like the Pont Saint-Bénézet in Avignon , he then has a chapel, dedicated to Saint Catherine

French city of Albi added to World Heritage List
The medieval city of Albi has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Located on the banks of the Tarn river in south-west France, the old city of Albi reflects the culmination of a medieval architectural and urban ensemble. Today the Old Bridge (Pont-Vieux), the Saint-Salvi quarter and its church are testimony to its initial development (10th -11th centuries). Following the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathar heretics (13th century) it became a powerful episcopal city. Built in a unique southern French Gothic style from local brick in characteristic red and orange colours, the lofty fortified Cathedral (late 13th century) dominates the city, demonstrating the power regained by the Roman Catholic clergy. Alongside the Cathedral is the vast bishop's Palais de la Berbie, overlooking the river and surrounded by residential quarters that date back to the Middle Ages. The Episcopal City of Albi forms a coherent and homogeneous ensemble of monuments and quarters that has remained largely unchanged over the centuries.

The Berbie Palace is an old episcopal palace located in Albi , in the south-west of France. Built in the second half of the xiii th century, under the episcopate of three successive bishops, the project required fifty years. Wanted as a prestigious residence by Durand de Beaucaire , it became a fortress under Bernard II of Combret and Bernard III of Castanet , facing the hostility of the population of Albigensia, both economically and religiously, with the Cathar heresy . Thereafter, it was remodeled several times by the bishops of the city between the xvi th century and xviiii th century, gaining comfort without losing quite the austere fortress.
It was classified as a historic monument in 1862 for construction and in 1965 for isolated interior elements: ceilings, fireplace, wood paneling. Since 2010, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site by its membership of the architectural ensemble Medieval of the episcopal city of Albi .
