Snorkeling Parker Pt & Little Salmon Bay | Rottnest Island WA
Snorkeling at Parker Point and Little Salmon Bay are part of a Marine Sanctuary and Snorkel Trail on Rottnest Island. We were delightfully surprised to see a huge Bailer Shell, Blue Devil fish and Crayfish.
Parker Point, Rottnest Island
Parker Point, located on the south-east end of Rottnest Island, is a breathtaking bay that has been named one of Australia’s best beaches.
As a boating destination it is the perfect anchorage with crystal clear waters and white, white sand. But be warned it is also one of the most popular bays on the island and during peak season can become extremely busy. There are no moorings in Parkers Point and you cannot book space in the bay it operates on a first come first served basis.
But if you are lucky enough to visit during the week, or out of the traditional summer holiday period, you may get to experience a slice of paradise on your own, or with just a few neighbours spread out over the vast bay.
From Thomson Bay it is a fairly short trip and, providing the south-westerly breeze is not blowing too strong, a calm and enjoyable one.
You need to head in a southerly direction from Thomson Bay passing between Phillip Rock and Natural Jetty (Phillip Point), there are lateral marks to guide you through.
After passing out into unprotected waters you need to ensure that you head in a south-westerly direction out around Twin Rocks, Wallace Island and Dyer Island. In the right swell waves will break in this area so it is always better to go too wide than try and cut the corner.
The navigation leads into Parker Point line-up on 300.4deg on your compass. It is important to stay on the line as entry into the bay is via an unmarked channel with reef on either side.
Once you enter the bay it is a long sand channel that runs parallel with the beach.
While it is open to the south-westerly breeze, or infamous Fremantle Doctor, which blows up around 20-25 knots with regular monotony, it is regarded as an all-weather anchorage because of the surrounding reef that dispels any swell and creates a protected anchorage.
