City of York was a 1,194 ton iron ship which sank after hitting a reef off Rottnest Island in the last few kilometres of its voyage from San Francisco to Fremantle, Western Australia in 1899.The three masted, 68 metre long, iron hulled ship was built in 1869 by Glasgow shipbuilders J. Elder and Company. The British owners were the 'Ship City of York Company'. It had only just been beaten by the famous Cutty Sark in the 1885 Great Race, a race from China to London in which large profits were earned by the ship to arrive with the first tea of the year.

Bathurst Lighthouse is one of two lighthouses on Rottnest Island, the other being Wadjemup Lighthouse. It is located on Bathurst Point, in the north east of the island, and was activated in 1900. The lighthouse was erected in response to a series of shipping disasters in the area, which included the loss of the City of York in 1899. The lightsource and lantern house were originally to be used at Cape Leeuwin but were then built in on Rottnest Island. In 1920 the original acetylene flame was replaced by a flasher, which made the keeper superfluous. An electric light was installed in 1986. Could these be the most Underrated beaches in World? (Fremantle & Rottnest Island, Australia)

Thanks to FlightCentre New Zealand, Tourism Western Australia and Air New Zealand. I found myself on a direct flight from Auckland to Perth. I spend 5 days on this journey to Western Australia, travelling between Perth and Fremantle.

Fremantle township has so many histories, full of characters and great eateries/Breweries. I can almost see myself moving here.

I have seen some amazing beaches in the world (Bali, Hawaii, Fiji, Rio de Janeiro, Caribbean islands & Zanzibar) Beaches on Rottnest Island seem to be right up there against those well-known beaches. I was very impressed by the cleanliness, the number of people (a few or no crowds at all) & the gin clear water.
