In the late 1800s Galveston was known as the “Playground of the South“. Today, it still retains a shared claim to the title among major cities along the Gulf Coast states. Galveston is a popular tourist destination which in 2007 brought $808 million to the local economy and attracted 5.4 million visitors. The city features an array of lodging options, including hotels such as the historic Hotel Galvez and Tremont House, the San Luis Resort and Spa and Conference Center, Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa, and Convention Center, vintage bed and breakfast inns, beachfront condominiums, and resort rentals. There are also many smaller familiar hotel chains on the island, 26 in all. The city’s tourist attractions include the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, Galveston Schlitterbahn Waterpark, Moody Gardens Botanical Park, the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum, the Lone Star Flight Museum, Galveston Railroad Museum, a downtown neighborhood of historic buildings known as The Strand, many historical museums and mansions, and miles of beach front from the East End’s Porretto Beach, Stewart Beach to the West End pocket parks.

GALVESTON, TEXAS KA 34.7 POLICE RADAR
This video should be pretty useful for those who regularly drive in always-beautiful Galveston, Texas.
My personal opinion: Galveston, TX Police Department does not have police cruisers equipped with stationary police radar (nor laser guns) and therefore they request Texas State Troopers to enforce speed limits on their behalf and getting a share or even the entire speeding ticket revenue.
ALL Texas State Troopers statewide use Ka 34.7 police radar units.
Very easy to detect with a professional radar detector.
In all my police radar videos I'm using a Beltronics STI Driver (NOT Magnum edition) radar detector with latest software updates.

Galveston Police Chief Henry Porretto on Washington Park Event
Details of a near tragedy Monday at Washington Park on Offats Bayour in Galveston was release today by Galveston Police Chief Henry Porretto to newspaper and both Spanish and English language TV stations from Houston who gathered in the lobby of police headquarters for the 4 o'clock press conference announced earlier in the day.
The Police News was also and after getting off to somewhat of a false start with a camera problem, managed to get all but a few seconds of Chief Porretto's remarks. There was one flaw in the video, which you will see, we a TV station camera man who arrived after Porretto had already began his statement and didn't mind walking in front of everyone's cameras as they were rolling.
CLICK HERE TO THE VIDEO and read the chief's statement below.
At aporoximately 5:05pm yesterday (Monday, May 26) evening, officers were dispatched to the 500 block of 42nd Street after witnesses observedd a silver Pontiac strike a parked vehicle and then observed a male exit the residence where the vehicle was stuck. Witnesses then reported that the male and female driver of the vehicle, later identified as Latonya Kirven, became involved in a verbal altercation until Kirven struck the male with her vehicle, running him over and fleeing the scene. Galveston EMS transported the victim to UTMB where is is currently listed in critical condition. At this time, the motive or intent behind the assault is still under investigation.
Shortly after the assault at approximately 5:19pm, Galveston Police Department began receiving 911 calls reporting a silver Pontiac had just driven into the water at Washington Park, in the 1600 block of 61st Street. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle enter the park and then drive into the water near the park boat ramp. Bystanders at the park observed a small infant floating in the water immediatley following the crash and courageously jumped into the water to rescue the child. Bystanders also attempted to pull Layonya Kirven, the driver, to safety, but she became combative and refused any assistance to exit the bayou. After officers arrived on the escene, several Galveston Police Patrol Officers entered the water to pull Kirven to the shore, who was now unclothed and exhiiting severe signs of intoxication. Kirven was transported to UTMB for initial treatment of minor injuries and to provide a blood sample to determine her level and source of intoxication. The was was also transported to UTMB for observation but appears to be uninjured at this time.
Latonya Kirven was released from UTMB at 3:45 this morning and transported to the Galveston County Jail. Kirven has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated with a Child in the Vehicle, bail $60,000, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, bail $100,000.00. The Galveston Police Department is working closely with the District Attorney's Ofice to determine the appropriateness and suitability of additional charges.
Videos of both the Aggravated Assault and the incident at Washington Park do exist and are currently beinging reviewed by investigators, but because of their evidentiary status will not be released until the investigation is complete. This is still a very active investigation that is still in it's earliest stages, but be assured that our detectives are working tirelessly to bring this case to a close.
On another note, The Galveston Police Department would like to commend those bystanders who risked their own safety to enter the water and rescue a child, and attempt to rescue the driver. Their actions were truly heroic and we look forward to properly recognizing them as soon as is appropriate.
