Portishead Town Council 140916 Janet Davey
Re: those footpath signs on the Golf Course that mysteriously were supposed to be there, then they weren't. Why? Cllr David Pasley, North Somerset Council Executive Member told Tom Wright, editor of the North Somerset Times, that the signs were in place. The paper ran an article also without checking. If Tom Wright had asked residents, we could have warned him that information from certain sources should always be checked to save embarrassment and misleading information. Janet Davey also asks the question as to whether town councillors are actually doing their best for Portishead. She highlights the bench campaign on the Royal Pier Path which, as with the golf course, she cannot recall councillors actively doing their best to assist campaigners. (I can confirm though that Cllr John Clark has been very proactive in supporting the bench campaign and his letters will be circulated. Mrs Davey at the time of making her address would have been unaware of Cllr Clark's correspondence). Mrs Davey rightly highlights the inadequacies of Portishead Town Council on important campaigns where they leave residents to do most of the work. The skatepark is also mentioned. So many campaigns. So many times councillors have failed to act. When Mrs Davey mentions the skatepark, sadly she is told her time is up and nobody responds to her. You may ask yourself why residents even bother turning up to speak. Many of us ask ourselves that every month. We do because we care about our town but even our patience is wearing thin with our councillors. That is not to say that those who do not attend, do not care. I am sure they do but perhaps they have become all too accustomed to the fact our town councillors fail to represent them. It is no good the town council chair Lesley Cottrell being polite unless the ethos of the town council changes to one that actively represents the concerns of Portishead people.

Annette Hennessy at Portishead Town Council Meeting 121016
I very much enjoyed correcting Cllr Cottrell by sending her two recordings. One from last month's Town Council Meeting which confirms that nobody called anyone a liar. Cllr Cottrell within five months of being Chair has committed the act of not listening to the public and being foolhardedly led by the clerk into distancing herself from the town's residents. It was Cllr Cottrell (Conservative) who wrote to the papers saying that she will never act politically, yet sadly she does. We all remember when, after saying she would always put the best interests of Portishead first, she co-opted onto the council Andrew Huffadine-Cooper. Not because of what he could do for Portishead, but because he was a Conservative. In doing so, Portishead lost an Independent person who was standing (Mr Paul Maltby) who knows more about Portishead and its people, than the whole of the town council put together. When challenged on why she voted politically, Cllr Cottrell said that Mr Huffadine-Cooper, would best fit better into the age generation of the current councillors. At the time, both candidates were within a few years of each other in age. What a ridiculous reason for her decision making. Another recording sent to her was of a member of public giving evidence to the public and town council that unfortunately we have indeed witnessed many incidents of lies from town and district councillors. Her portfolio of evidence is larger than mine.
However, last month I did explain what the definition of a liar was and I gave some incidents where councillors were involved in not telling the truth. I have reiterated many times that if town councillors would like the written evidence of misinformation given by town councillors, they only have to ask. I can do no more than I did some time back, by taking a sack truck to the meeting stacked high with the paper archives, most of which is now electronically held by several people. The reason of course the town councillors do not respond back is nothing to do with agenda items. That's poppycock and only relates to decision making. Each and every councillor could respond with permission from the Chairman but choose not to because they know they are unable to refute the evidence in the public's hands. I pointed out that Chair Cllr Cottrell has responded herself in the past as have previous chairs and as have individual councillors. Only when they want to of course.
The town council is not supposed to discuss any issue that isn't within their responsibilities, but they do. We had the toing and froing over the Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve. When they didn't want to respond they used the fact it was the district council's (NSC's) responsibility. But now they are even officially visiting the nature reserve and discussing it because this time they want to (and of course the public demanded the council did something). Portishead Town Council has to be the most inconsistent body of people in the county. If the councillors adhered to their Code of Conduct, then the public would not need to correct them in the first place, remembering that misinformation is a breach of their Code of Conduct. But sadly they fail to remember that.
At the end of my address, I had to commend a town councillor because he has written to North Somerset Council in support of the reinstatement of the bench on the Royal Pier Path (just up from the RNLI Station). Not only that, but when NSC wrote back to Cllr John Clark with some ridiculous reasons why the bench was not going to be reinstated, John Clark challenged NSC again. There are other instances in the town council meeting of the 12th October 2016 where John Clark stands up for the public and for that he has to be commended. Thank you Cllr Clark for representing the electorate. We have not always seen eye to eye on issues like the skatepark and Cllr Clark knows why that was when I truly found it difficult continuing conversing with him, but since, Cllr Clark has redeemed himself many times putting the public and Portishead first and foremost. Surely that is all we expect from our councillors. So few demonstrate Cllr Clark's qualities.
