Day hike #28: Prairie View Trail winter hike with Jewell pass descent in Kananaskis country
Prairie View winter hike with Jewell Pass descent in the Kananaskis. Timestamps:
1:54 Barrier Lake
5:42 Breaking out of the trees
8:51 Prairie View
10:40 Yates lookout tower
12:44 Weather station destroyed by lightning
13:20 Beginning the Jewell Pass descent
18:15 Jewell Creek
19:00 Jewell Falls
22:36 Stoney trail
Started out with some great shots of Barrier lake and ended up cresting Yates Mountain with 2 ladies who also happened to be hiking the trail. The lookout tower up there was cool and the weather station was struck by lightning. Descended on my own down Jewell pass and was surprised by Jewell falls and the beauty of simply hiking down a power line access road beside Barrier lake. One of the young ladies ended up going with me up Mt. Lady MacDonald the next day.
This hike is described in the Kananaskis Country Trail Guide volume 1. Page 33.

Alberta Hiking - Prairie View Trail
Hey Everyone!
Happy to be born Canadian, and I am so excited to show some of the awesome places to hike in Alberta. If you are in the Southern region like Calgary, Banff, Lethbridge and looking for places to hike; I would definitely recommend making a trip out to this Prairie View Trail. It's only 1 hour west out of Calgary and I would say that it's about a 5 hour hike. It is definitely a beginners / intermediate level and also very dog friendly!
Keep in mind that the Kananaskis Country actually doesn't let dogs off leash so be wary in case you happen to let them roam free.

Hiking Prairie View Trail & Jewell Pass - Kananaskis, Alberta
This Thanksgiving Colin and I spent the weekend hiking and camping the Candian Rockies! We hiked Prairie View Trail & Jewell Pass in Kananaskis Country and then spent the night at the oTENTik's at Tunnel Mountain Village 2 in Banff. These little cabins are adorable!
The hike took us about 4 hours because we went off trail to a second peak. Our entire route ended up being just under 15km. Shoe spikes are highly recommended for the winter season on this trail!
Take a look at our little adventure, and let me know if you've done the hike!

West Wind Pass Hike in Kananaskis | Journey Alberta
I'm back out in the Kananaskis area in this video to do the hike up the West Wind Pass Trail! It starts in the Bow Valley Wildland Provincial Park, right next to the Spray Lakes Reservoir. Although most of the hike is in the trees, when you get to the end of the trail the views are incredible. Looking east you can see the Trans Canada Highway, and looking west you get amazing views of the Spray Lakes Reservoir. Overall the hike is moderate, and most people can do it with some taking more time than others.

Kananaskis Hiking Part 1
My girlfriend and I decided to spend a few days out in the Kananaskis area to see what you can explore without a national park pass. Part one includes the Prairieview Trail, Grotto Canyon and Troll Falls. Information can be found:
Prairie Mountain Hike
Hiking up Prairie Mountain brings back memories of the Calgary flood of 2013, and a wonderful Canada Day with Chrissy and Ernie Lakusta. Elbow Falls and Prairie Mountain will never be the same.
