Magnificent UNESCO Prehistoric Art and Rock Caves: Part 2 Bhimbhetka, India
More than 600 caves have a collection of the oldest prehistoric rock art in India. Only 9 of the 15 caves were open for tourists to visit when we were there and the paintings date from the Palaolithic (10,000 years ago), to Mesolithic (10,000-5,000 years ago), to Neolithic (3,000 years ago).
Colors were prepared by combining manganese, hematite, soft red stone, coal and even new teak leaves. Most of the paintings are still brilliant due to a chemical reaction between the rocks and color while some have been destroyed by acid rain.
If you plan to visit Central India, don't miss the magnificent prehistoric art at Bhimbhetka.

black, red and white. It has become a historical sight and also a piece of history to be preserved as it is an archaeological rock for India.
Lakhudiyar is not much of a cave but more of rock shelters which were the rescue spots of the early man which was used by them to save them from the harsh climate. These rock shelters are said to be named Lakhudiyar as they are nearly millions of year old. These walls depict the life and the surroundings of the early man. Today these paintings provide a sneak peek into the life of early man. There are also the images of the weapons that were used by these people in the early times.
The Lakhudiyar printed walls have many pictures which are drawn on these rocks. The pictures are mostly generic drawings of people and animals. On one side of the wall is the painting of people who have been shown performing a mass dance in a group of 34 people on one side and 28 people on the other. The paintings give a glimpse of the type of life the people had in Uttarakhand in early ages.
These pictures also depicted the clothes and pet animals that were domesticated in those times. There are other geometrical figures painted on the Lakhudiyar Walls which provide somewhat relevant information of history to the archaeologists. These pictures are mainly painted in red, black, white and whitish color. There are other places that are located near the Lakhudiyar Rock Shelters which are similar to Lakhudiyar. Some of these are Farkanauli, Petshaal located nearby Lakhudiyar and these too represent the life of the early men

A group of freelance scientists discovered rock shelter painting sites in Tapti valley deep inside the Satpura ranges in Gawilgarh hills on Maharashtra (MS) -Madhya Pradesh (MP) border & only 60 Km. from Amravati city in Vidarbha. There has not been any known previous record of such cave paintings at the said region except a few near Pachmarhi (MP). The team of scientists led by Dr. Vijay Ingole from Amravati comprising Mr. Padmakar Lad, Mr. Shirishkumar Patil, Dr. Manohar Khode, Mr. Dnyaneswar Damahe and Mr. Pradeep Hirurkar has been in search of such caves in the above location in Satpura range for the last 10 years. Their efforts were eventually rewarded during the last week of January 2007 when they discovered the first rock shelter with ancient paintings. Later within the next 6 months more than 100 cave shelters and 30 of such rock shelter painting sites dating from upper Paleolithic ( 15000 BC) period to Prehistoric ( 2000 to 4000 BC) period have been discovered and recorded. It is evident from the diversity, quality of paintings, pictographs and having early human settlement for such a long duration one would not have any doubt that the above site will be a world heritage in the near future. Now the site is under Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) since 2012.

SUMMARY
=======
Uttarakhand (), formerly known as Uttaranchal (), is a state in the northern part of India. It is often referred to as the Devabhumi (literally Land of the Gods) due to numerous Hindu temples and pilgrimage centres found throughout the state. Uttarakhand is known for the natural environment of the Himalayas, the Bhabar and the Terai. On 9 November 2000, Uttarakhand became the 27th state of the Republic of India, being carved from the Himalayan districts of Uttar Pradesh. It borders Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north; the Sudurpashchim Pradesh of Nepal to the east; the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh to the south and Himachal Pradesh to the west and north-west. The state is divided into two divisions, Garhwal and Kumaon, with a total of 13 districts. The capital of Uttarakhand is Dehradun, the largest city of the state, which is a railhead. The High Court of the state is located in Nainital.
Archaeological evidence supports the existence of humans in the region since prehistoric times. The region formed a part of the Uttarakuru Kingdom during the Vedic age of Ancient India. Among the first major dynasties of Kumaon were the Kunindas in the 2nd century BCE who practised an early form of Shaivism. Ashokan edicts at Kalsi show the early presence of Buddhism in this region. During the medieval period, the region was consolidated under the Kumaon Kingdom and Garhwal Kingdom. In 1816, most of modern Uttarakhand was ceded to the British as part of the Treaty of Sugauli. Although the erstwhile hill kingdoms of Garhwal and Kumaon were traditional rivals, the proximity of different neighboring ethnic groups and the inseparable and complementary nature of their geography, economy, culture, language, and traditions created strong bonds between the two regions which further strengthened during the Uttarakhand movement for statehood in the 1990s.
The natives of the state are generally called Uttarakhandi, or more specifically either Garhwali or Kumaoni by their region of origin. According to the 2011 Census of India, Uttarakhand has a population of 10,086,292, making it the 20th most populous state in India.

Archaeological evidence supports the existence of humans in the region since prehistoric times. The region formed a part of the Uttara Kuru Kingdom during the Vedic age of Ancient India.
