Mount Rushmore (South Dakota) - In Another Minute (Week 246)
--- ---
Mount Rushmore, in the Black Hills of South Dakota, features the faces of four United States presidents (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln) carved into the granite of the mountain.
From the beginning intended as a pure tourist attraction that would bring more people and revenue to South Dakota, the sculptures were initially created by Gutzon Borglum starting in 1927 and eventually finished by his son Lincoln Borglum in 1941 - with the help of many workers, of course. Today, Mount Rushmore National Memorial attracts between 2 and 3 million visitors a year.
While the image of Mount Rushmore is so iconic that it seems like you've seen it with your own eyes a dozen times, I was quite struck how different it felt to actually finally do see it with your own eyes. Here you are on a lovely road trip through the Black Hills and suddenly there they are, peeking over the tree line. The best part about this memorial is really to see it in the context of the hills and woods around it. It's so surreal! And quite cool!
I never expected I would take the time in my life to travel to South Dakota and see Mount Rushmore. Now that I find myself (also never planned) living in Colorado, so many American road side attractions are within reach and I'm happily indulging in one of my favorite pastimes: road tripping!
This trip, we actually took in September 2014. I had saved a few videos from last year to share throughout the winter when it's a bit more of a challenge to find interesting subjects to share with you, besides snow, snow, snow.

Mt Rushmore ( President's Mountain ) in our Class B RV
We visited Mt. Rushmore in our Class B RV on 5-4-15. This is a must see, it is amazing! Mount Rushmore is located in the Black Hills of Keystone, South Dakota. Four Presidents are carved into the granite rock, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
WHY WERE THESE PRESIDENTS PICKED?
At the end of the video there is a picture that explains why.

Scenic U.S. Route 16A to Mt Rushmore
U.S. Route 16A is a scenic United States highway, which divides from U.S. Route 16 in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The highway's western terminus is a junction with US 16 and US 385 in Custer, South Dakota. The eastern terminus is at an interchange with US 16 called the Keystone Wye south of Rapid City, South Dakota.
The route passes through Keystone, South Dakota; Norbeck Wildlife Refuge; Mount Rushmore National Memorial; and Custer State Park (including State Game Lodge and Legion Lake); before rejoining the parent highway.
Pigtail bridge at the exit of the same tunnel
US 16A is famous for its scenic, one-lane tunnels aligned to frame the faces on Mount Rushmore, its pigtail bridges, and its sections of divided highway but with single (and narrow) lanes on each roadway. It is the only route which can be used to drive through Custer State Park without having to pay an entrance fee for the park, provided the traveler does not stop in the Park.
Portions of US 16A are known as the Iron Mountain Road. The route includes most of the tunnels on the South Dakota state highway system, including the only four-lane tunnel in the state, just north of Keystone. Part of the highway is also a boundary of the Black Elk Wilderness. The Iron Mountain portion of the road is not maintained in the winter. The road, like several other scenic roads in the Black Hills, was originally laid out by Governor Peter Norbeck, specifically to create a very scenic, slow-speed road for tourists. The section of US 16A from SD 89 to SD 244 is known as the Peter Norbeck Memorial Byway in honor of the governor.[2] At the highest point of the byway, on the summit of Iron Mountain, there is a small memorial to Governor Norbeck.

Aspen, Colorado, United States, North America
Aspen is a city in and the county seat of Pitkin County, Colorado, United States. It is situated in a remote area of the Rocky Mountains' Sawatch Range and Elk Mountains, along the Roaring Fork River at an elevation just below 8,000 feet (2,400 m) above sea level on the Western Slope, 11 miles (18 km) west of the Continental Divide. As of the 2010 census, there were 6,658 permanent residents. Founded as a mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom and named because of the abundance of aspen trees in the area, the city boomed during the 1880s, its first decade of existence. That early era ended when the Panic of 1893 led to a collapse in the silver market, and the city began a half-century known as the quiet years during which its population steadily declined, reaching a nadir of less than a thousand by 1930. Aspen's fortunes reversed in the mid-20th century when neighboring Aspen Mountain was developed into a ski resort, and industrialist Walter Paepcke bought many properties in the city and redeveloped them. Today it is home to three renowned institutions, two of which Paepcke helped found, that have international importance: the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Aspen Institute, and the Aspen Center for Physics. In the late 20th century, the city became a popular retreat for celebrities. Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson worked out of a downtown hotel and ran unsuccessfully for county sheriff. Singer John Denver wrote two songs about Aspen after settling there. Both of them popularized Aspen among the countercultural youth of the 1970s as an ideal place to live, and the city continued to grow even as it gained notoriety for some of the era's hedonistic excesses as well, particularly its drug culture. Today the musicians and movie stars have been joined by corporate executives. As a result of this influx of wealth Aspen boasts the most expensive real estate prices in the United States and most middle-class residents can no longer afford to live there. It remains a popular tourist destination, with outdoor recreation in the surrounding White River National Forest serving as a summertime complement to the four ski areas in the vicinity. The city's roots are traced to the winter of 1879, when a group of miners ignored pleas by Frederick Pitkin, governor of Colorado, to return across the Continental Divide due to an uprising of the Ute Indians. Originally named Ute City, the small community was renamed Aspen in 1880, and, in its peak production years of 1891 and 1892, surpassed Leadville as the United States' most productive silver-mining district. Production expanded due to the passage of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890, which doubled the government's purchase of silver. By 1893, Aspen had banks, a hospital, two theaters, an opera house and electric lights. Economic collapse came with the Panic of 1893, when President Cleveland called a special session of Congress and repealed the act. Within weeks, many of the Aspen mines were closed and thousands of miners were put out of work. It was proposed that silver be recognized as legal tender and the People's Party (populists) adopted that as one of its main issues; Davis H. Waite, an Aspen newspaperman and agitator was elected governor of Colorado on the Democratic Ticket; but in time the movement failed. Eventually, after wage cuts, mining revived somewhat, but production declined and by the 1930 census only 705 residents remained. Remaining, however, were fine stocks of old commercial buildings and residences, along with excellent snow. Aspen's development as a ski resort first flickered in the 1930s when investors conceived of a ski area, but the project was interrupted by World War II. Friedl Pfeifer, a member of the 10th Mountain Division who had trained in the area, returned to the area and linked up with industrialist Walter Paepcke and his wife Elizabeth. The Aspen Skiing Corporation was founded in 1946 and the city quickly became a well-known resort, hosting the FIS World Championships in 1950. Paepcke also played an important role in bringing the Goethe Bicentennial Convocation to Aspen in 1949, an event held in a newly designed tent by the architect Eero Saarinen. Aspen was now on the path to becoming an internationally known ski resort and cultural center, home of the Aspen Music Festival and School. The area would continue to grow with the development of three additional ski areas, Buttermilk (1958), Aspen Highlands (1958), and Snowmass (1969). In 1977, notorious serial killer Ted Bundy, while in the Pitkin County Courthouse in Aspen for a pre-trial hearing, jumped from a second-story window and escaped. He remained free for six days, hiding out on Aspen Mountain, before he was arrested while attempting to drive a stolen car out of the city. In 1977, Aspen was thoroughly photographed for the Aspen Movie Map project funded by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Mt. Rushmore Trip - 25 Aug, 2013
Mt. Rushmore was located on a hill, when we were on the road, we could already see the four president sculpture high on the mountains, It was very spectacular. The day we visited had many people, so it took some time to enter the parking lot. The Mount Rushmore was a national park, we could buy a yaer parking pass, and we can enter at any time during the year. The parking lot was very big, there were divided into many zones, we parked in the zone which is nearest to the park entry.
The Mt. Rushmore's sculpture was much bigger than my imagination, with the international flags flying, the scene was very beautiful. JJ and I just keep taking pictures. At the same time, I saw many kinds of people, I also saw some Chinese, but they speak Cantonese (it is not my language).
Continue to go inside, the sculpture was getting bigger and bigger in front of me, it was really spectacular. I couldn't imagine 130 years before, how did the workers made this huge awesome artworks. The faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln were lifelike. There were a plaza for visitors to sit down and take a rest, chat with friends, and watch this awesome artwork. Under the plaza, there were a theater, but it only opens at night, so we did not visit. I also saw there were some people walking on the trails that was on the mountain, it was very near to the sculpture, just next to it, but we did not visit either.
After watching this unbelievably awesome artwork for at least 20 minutes, we went to the gift shop. I bought some postcard, and send it back to Taiwan, to my family and friends when we came back to Ipswich. Each of them were different, some are the day view of Mt. Rushmore, some are the night view with beautiful fireworks. I also made a coin that have Mt. Rushmore pattern, just like the one I made in dinosaur park. The interesting thing is, it was made by the real penny!

Information:
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore, a granite batholith formation in the Black Hills in Keystone, South Dakota, United States. Sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum, Mount Rushmore features 60-foot (18 m) sculptures of the heads of four United States presidents: George Washington (1732–1799), Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), and Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)[2] The entire memorial covers 1,278.45 acres (2.00 sq mi; 5.17 km2) [3] and is 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level.[4]
South Dakota historian Doane Robinson is credited with conceiving the idea of carving the likenesses of famous people into the Black Hills region of South Dakota in order to promote tourism in the region. Robinson's initial idea was to sculpt the Needles; however, Gutzon Borglum rejected the Needles site because of the poor quality of the granite and strong opposition from Native American groups. They settled on the Mount Rushmore location, which also has the advantage of facing southeast for maximum sun exposure. Robinson wanted it to feature western heroes like Lewis and Clark, Red Cloud,[5] and Buffalo Bill Cody,[6] but Borglum decided the sculpture should have a more national focus and chose the four presidents whose likenesses would be carved into the mountain. After securing federal funding through the enthusiastic sponsorship of Mount Rushmore's great political patron, U.S. Senator Peter Norbeck,[7] construction on the memorial began in 1927, and the presidents' faces were completed between 1934 and 1939. Upon Gutzon Borglum's death in March 1941, his son Lincoln Borglum took over construction. Although the initial concept called for each president to be depicted from head to waist, lack of funding forced construction to end in late October 1941.[8]
Mount Rushmore has become an iconic symbol of the United States, and has appeared in works of fiction, and has been discussed or depicted in other popular works. It attracts over two million people annually.

Vintage train to stop at 'Strasburg Video #5
Deer Trail, Colorado History as I remembered it in the 1950's

Steam Locomotive No. 844, the last steam engine built for the Union Pacific Railroad, will roll into Strasburg Friday, Aug. 17
. SUBMITTED PHOTOS & VIDEOS By: Ron Schaffer August 17, 2012, 4:36 PM
Local residents can mark the 1-70 Corridor's rich railroad history when a historic steam locomotive with several vintage support cars rolls into the area.
Delivered in 1944, Steam Locomotive No. 844 is the last steam engine made for the Union Pacific Railroad. Known as the Living Legend, No. 844, which was built as a high-speed passenger engine, is scheduled to arrive in Strasburg NO. 844 at 2:01 p.m., Friday, Aug. 17, at the south end of Main Street. But it was late for some reason as it pulled in at
2:40 p. m. as I was walking down the tracks headed to the South end of Main Street and seen it coming. That is when I started to roll the Kodak with the first video.
There was a big crowed that show up for the Steam Locomotive No. 844 in Strasburg and from all walks of live and meet to people that were out of state to see Old Steam Locomotive No. 844, and that was a great site to see that. I really enjoy going to Strasburg from Deer Trail, Colorado and mostly likely some resident there seen it going through Deer Trail, Colorado., and took picture of it?
The 844's distinction is that it's never been retired from Union Pacific's locomotive roster, said Mark Davis, a UP spokesman. With it being the last steam locomotive delivered to UP in 1944, that's quite an accomplishment.
The train will depart at 2:30 p.m. after a brief maintenance stop, during which the crew will lubricate the moving parts.
They have enough fuel and water to carry them through the day, Davis added.
No. 844, which was nearly scrapped in 1960, is on the fourth leg of the UP 150 Express, a multi-segment tour celebrating Union Pacific's 150th anniversary. This portion of the trip started in Cheyenne, Wyo., Aug. 5 and will end there Aug. 18 after traveling east across Nebraska to DCS Moines, Iowa, where it was put on display for four days as part of the Iowa State Fair. It then traveled south to Kansas City, Mo., before turning back west across Kansas into Colorado.
On the day of its stop at Strasburg, the UP 150 Express will travel from Sharon Springs, Kan., to Denver.
The original Union Pacific was created when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act of July 1, 1862, to promote the construction of a transcontinental railroad in the United States. The UP 150 Express is traveling 13,000 miles through 15 states as part of the 150th anniversary celebration.
Our 150th anniversary is a milestone that provides us with the opportunity to thank our communities for supporting Union Pacific, said Robert W. Turner, a Union Pacific official. We are happy to celebrate our past and look forward
to continuing to meet America's freight transportation needs.
The UP 150 Express will bring several historic rail cars with it: the railroad's last boiler car; water tenders; and baggage, maintenance, and concession cars.
Strasburg's railroad history is particularly deep. Though lesser known than Promontory Summit, Utah, where the historic Last Spike of the first transcontinental railroad was driven, the Strasburg joining of the rails of the Kansas Pacific in August actually marked the true completion of a coast-to-coast railway network because, until 1872, passengers on the first transcontinental line were required to disembark between Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Omaha, Neb., to cross the Missouri River by boat.
The original Union Pacific, which built the first transcontinental railroad with the Central Pacific Railroad of California, merged with the Kansas Pacific and Denver Pacific railroads in 1880. The new company was renamed the Union Pacific Railway Co. by UP investor Jay Gould.
Today the Union Pacific Railroad is the principal operating company of Union Pacific Corporation, linking 23 states in the western two-thirds of the country by rail.
In Colorado the railroad has 1,535 miles of track and 1,329 employees with an annual payroll of $112 million. Its presence dates to 1867, when track was laid across the northeastern tip of the state as part of the first transcontinental railroad.
The fifth segment of the UP 150 Express will head to the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3.
