THE FIRST AND THE SMALL 1960s STATE OF RHODE ISLAND TRAVELOGUE
This 1960s color educational film about Rhode Island and Delaware was part of the weekly TV series “America!” Narrated by actor Jack Douglas. Rhode Island. Statues of founder Roger Williams are in Prospect Terrace Park in Providence. The First Baptist Church is shown. The Capitol’s dome has a bronze statue on top (1:24-2:48). The Rhode Island School of Design houses Renoir’s “A Girl Reading”, Monet’s “Portrait of Bertha”, Delacroix’s “Arabs Travelling”, and a Van Gogh. The Nes-min sarcophagus and mummy are on display, as is a Babylonian lion made of glazed tile (2:49-4:43). A Saunderstown sign marks the birthplace of portrait painter Gilbert Stuart. Shown are a self-portrait and George Washington. The inside of the 1751 home is shown. A tour guide explains the snuff mill in use (4:44-6:25). The Crescent Park amusement park operated from 1886-1979. A man receives a bib at The Patio at Crescent Inn. Outdoor dining at Narragansett Bay start with a close-up of a ladle of chowder (6:26-7:26). Bristol has Linden Place, home of Colonel Samuel Colt (7:27-8:10). A car drives along Ocean Drive with its views of the coastline. The 1899 Elms mansion in Newport has its outside architecture shown from several angles, and its fountain gardens. The Breakers gate is opened, built by Cornelius Vanderbilt using Italian architecture. Its coach room and stable house an exhibit of custom-built coaches. Its views of the ocean are shown (8:11-10:20). Cars pass through the Jamestown Bridge gate. A ferry also carries cars and passengers. Jamestown Island attractions include a 1787 windmill used to grind meal. The sails are attached and the mill turns. The third oldest lighthouse is the Beavertail Light Station. A man stands on rocks and fishes in the ocean surf. A 1963 Ford Galaxy car and a car pulling a pop-up camper drive on to the ferry (10:21-13:36). The Newport Outdoor Art Festival features paintings hung on sidewalk fences throughout the town. Yachts and sailboats move through the water (13:37-14:46). Delaware. Pastoral scenes are shown. The gate opens at Fort Christina (Fort Altena), which has the Swedish Tercentenary Monument. Historic structures on the property include an ice house and a block house used for protection against Indians. A slit allowed a rifle to be used. (15:09-16:51). Dover has the Capitol building, Statehouse, and Hall of Records, which houses the 1682 Royal Charter for Delaware. The State Museum has rooms of antique furnishings on display, including Delaware Valley ladderback chairs, Delft fireplace tiles, blacksmith-made candle holders, and oil portraits by James Claypoole. The 1790 Presbyterian Church has a cup with a frog in it to discourage children from drinking ale. A Grand Harmonicon (Musical Glasses) 1800s instrument is shown (16:52-19:33). The home and portrait of patriot lawyer John Dickinson is shown (19:34-20:25). Lewes Beach features sunbathers and a man crabbing. The large but old homes of Lewes are shown. A delivery cart advertises Thompson’s Country Store, whose workers dress in vintage clothing. The vintage wooden checkerboard and vintage cough syrup are on display (20:26-23:31).

Roger Williams original grave homestead site Providence RI
This is a clip of the strip of land that Williams owned after arriving in Providence, Rhode Island in 1636. In 1683 he was buried under an old apple tree in the back yard of the light sandstone house. He was later reinterred in Prospect Terrace Park. The root which grew in the shape of his skeletal remains is displayed in the basement of the John Brown House.
