Back to The Future 3.22.2018
In a city where the word `oldest’ greets visitors at nearly every turn, The Redwood Library and Athenaeum in Newport stakes a claim as the oldest lending library in the United States, first opening its doors in 1750. Like every library, though, The Redwood is navigating its way in a digital age, working to remain relevant and vibrant for its patrons. And that’s where the `athenaeum’ part of its name comes in. This month Jim Hummel takes us inside a place that is looking back and ahead at the same time.

2 Pratt Street - Unit 1A - Providence, RI
Life doesn't have to just imitate art, it becomes art at this exceptional townhouse on Providence's East Side. Part of the College Hill neighborhood, this Friedrich St. Florian designed building was constructed in 2005. A private courtyard features rigorously geometric architecture, while organic building materials bring softness and balance to the structure. Each unit enjoys a private parking garage that opens into the residence, and the exterior harmony is mirrored in the interior through the use of minimalist decor and open spaces. The style of this 3 bedroom residence is modern, and the feel—sophisticated.
Pragmatically constructed, the layout is intelligent with an open concept living and dining room. Clean lines, stainless fixtures in the kitchen, and a large fireplace set the backdrop to the space - an atmosphere of sleek elegance. A deck off of the dining area leads to a private zen garden, providing the perfect relaxation space.
Variations in color and texture add depth to the 2nd floor master suite, and the sumptuous master bath owes its air of tranquility largely to the harmony between these elements. Two decks are located off the third floor master, which could be a family room. The west facing deck is nicely secluded by trees in the summer and offers capitol building views when the leaves fall.
Living on College Hill places you close to everything. The historic and intellectual centers of the East Side are nearby. The mile of history, the Providence Athenaeum, the state courthouse, and the institutions of Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design are only blocks away. Even more, this address puts you within walking distance of downtown Providence, allowing you to experience all that this cultural center has to offer.
