THANK YOU to Michael Lombardi for the underwater footage. Go check out his website at OceanOpportunity.com
Right now we’re zooming in on Rhode Island, my home state and the smallest one in America. I’m a big fan of Rhode Island for a lot of reasons, and of course, one of those reasons is the abandoned spots.
I’ve covered most of the big ones in my abandoned from above series… and today I wanted to share a somewhat unknown one that a friend told me about. That’s exactly where we’re heading to right now.
This is the Providence River, which runs down the right side of the state and out into Narragansett Bay. This spot specifically is only about a mile from downtown Providence, the state capital.
Settled into this river is an abandoned crane sitting on a 100 ft barge…and it’s been here since 2017.
Even today, what exactly caused the barge and crane to sink is unknown.
The crane sticks out of the water about 30 feet - and to give you an idea of how big this is - the bottom of the barge sits 25 feet under water. And thanks to the efforts of professional diver and explorer Michael Lombardi, we can take a look down there.
The underwater footage was taken in late November 2018. There’s already a stark difference between what’s above the water and below. Almost everything still remains on the barge, except for some barrels and tools that floated to the surface when it sank. The clanging noise you can hear in this footage is from waterfront construction going on somewhere in the bay.
The interesting thing about this is that there actually is a state fund for abandoned vessels. Before it’s allocated for something like this they try to have the person who's responsible for their property pay to remove it. At some point, they could take it out, but until then the barge will remain where it is.
Thanks for checking this out!

10,000 Suns | PVD Ped Bridge | S1E2 | Around the Providence River Pedestrian Bridge
Ten Thousand Suns is a summer-long botanical performance in which over 10,000 sunflower seeds have been planted and being nurtured over the course of the summer months, on land that until recently sat under a highway, with high compaction, low-organic material, and embedded with toxicity. A portion of the performance is simply the presence of the those who have volunteered to care for the field, with no other motive then “developing” a garden/park for everyone to enjoy. WaterFire at Providence River 2014
WaterFire is the award-winning sculpture by Barnaby Evans presented on the rivers of downtown Providence, RI.
First created by Evans in 1994 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of First Night Providence, WaterFire has grown to become an annual public art phenomenon.
WaterFire is simultaneously a free public art installation, a performance work, an urban festival, a civic ritual and a spiritual communal ceremony. Well known nationally and internationally as a community arts event, WaterFire’s symbolism and interpretation is both inclusive and expansive - reflecting the recognition that individuals must act together to strengthen and preserve their community.[1]
On WaterFire evenings, downtown Providence is transformed by one hundred bonfires that burn just above the surface of the three rivers that pass through the middle of downtown Providence in Waterplace Park (the Woonasquatucket, Moshassuck, and Providence rivers). The public is invited to come and walk the riverfront, and enjoy the beauty of the flickering firelight, the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, the changing silhouettes of the volunteer firetenders, and the music from around the world – each of which engages the senses and emotions of all who stroll the paths of Waterplace Park.
Average attendance is 40,000 a night,[2] ranging from 10,000 to 100,000. WaterFire is presented for free, with only ten percent of the funds needed to host WaterFire acquired through governmental means and the remainder coming from private and corporate donations.
2016 Smart Growth Awards | The Providence Foundation
Formed in 1974, the Providence Foundation took on the naysayers who had already written the City’s obituary to become a force for the transformation and revitalization of downtown Providence. Under the leadership of Dan Baudouin for more than 20 years and supported by 140 of the leading companies and institutions in Rhode Island, the Providence Foundation has been a consistent leader through eight city administrations as an advocate for difficult, but necessary projects. Its leadership of innovative public-private partnerships led to the dynamic landscape we know today, including the Capital Center District, WaterPlace Park, the relocation of I-195 and railroad tracks, the Convention Center, Providence Place Mall, a revitalized Westminster Street and a restored PPAC. All of these initiatives, in which the Foundation worked closely with city, state and federal governments, now serve as the backdrop to the City’s national accolades of “Best Small City in America” by Architectural Digest; “America’s Favorite City” by Travel & Leisure Magazine; and “America’s Coolest City” by GQ Magazine.

Spring Striper Fishing Season in underway in the Providence and Seekonk Rivers . The last weeks of April I had reports of striped bass taking sea worms at the Henderon Bridge almost daily. Spring Striped bass fishing in the Seekonk River is highly productive due to the herring run at Omega Pond in East Providence and below the Blackstone River waterfall. Herring and Pogies swim up and down the Providence and Seekonk Rivers to forage on the menhaden and herring.
Shore fishermen, kayak fishermen and boat anglers take advantage of the protected waters of the Providence and Seekonk Rivers. April and May's high winds often make spring striped bass fishing in more exposed areas difficult if not impossible to fish.
Seekonk River Access
Access for boat fishermen is available at the State Ramp School St Pawtucket RI or the new ramp off of Gano St Providence RI. offers launching, parking and shore fishing. Collier Park off Allens Ave in Providence is directly off 95 It is just south the Providence Hurricane Barrier. With easy access to 195 Bold Point in East Providence offers launching, parking and shore fishing.
Kayak fishermen can easily launch under the Henderson Bridge on River Road on Providences East Side. There is shore fishing available there before 9 pm
Waterfire, Providence, RI
Waterfire Providence: the award-winning sculpture by Barnaby Evans installed on the three rivers of downtown Providence, has been praised by Rhode Island residents and international visitors alike as a powerful work of art and a moving symbol of Providence's renaissance. WaterFire's one hundred sparkling bonfires, the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, the flickering firelight on the arched bridges, the silhouettes of the firetenders passing by the flames, the torch-lit vessels traveling down the river, and the enchanting music from around the world engage all the senses and emotions of those who stroll the paths of Waterplace Park.
Urban Fishing In Providence Rhode Island
Picked a random spot in a not so great section of Providence on the Woonasquatucket river and did some urban fishing.
Was surprised at the number of fish we caught and the number of different types of fish in such a small area. Caught a bass, a few pumpkinseeds and a bunch of bluegills on Berkeley powerbait worms on a dropshot.
